Games For Windows: Dwarf Fortress

This month’s issue of Games for Windows has an awesome 3 page article dedicated solely to Dwarf Fortress. YES! I love the layout, too.

Zach, for his part, isn’t all that interested in how it works. “If I didn’t have a brother who could program… I would have taken it upon myself to fill his shoes,” he explains. “But as I do have that brother, I am blessed with the opportunity to make my computer-game dreams a reality.”

Very interesting to read about the dynamic between Tarn and Zach Adams and how they work together to create the Roguelike monster that is Dwarf Fortress.

Altho I hate vista and every move microsoft makes related to it, I’m going to give this game a try

  • uh

considering that the game has nothing to do with vista or microsoft

I’ve tried to play Dwarf Fortress like 4 different times. It makes my brain hurt.

This sounds lame, but I’d be much more willing to play it if it had graphics.

Then again, a ‘flingify’ function might convince me to give it another shot.

The only reason I dislike rougelikes is I get bored trying to deal with the complex and unintuitive interfaces- that and the lack of real graphical feedback.

But DF is an amazing piece of work. I wish I was less shallow and willing to sit, learn, and play through it.

Cool for the dwarf fortressers… Kudos to them…

I hope this indirectly contributes to the roguelike scene and makes more people aware of it

This is actually the first time I’ve read a description of that game (I’ve heard of it before, but hadn’t read about it). It sounds amazing, and makes me want to try creating one of these set in “real life” — non-fantasy non-scifi setting.

But hundreds of thousands of lines of code… ID took 14,000, and I thought that was a lot.

    This game is amazing.
