DoomRL

The latest version of DoomRL has been released. The last version was released over a year ago, so this is nice surprise for fans of the fast-paced roguelike. Version 0.9.9 has a lot of neat additions, including weapon and armor mods, unique items, new levels, new traits, new alt-fire modes, and a badge/medal system, among other things. Lots of balancing and tweaking has been done to the game, too.

This is the coolest version of one of my favorite roguelikes, so I recommend it.

Thanks for the heads up, D-rock. I love this game, but had no idea it would ever be updated again.

i wanna play a graphical version with your tiles, derek.

  • Allen

I generally dislike Roguelikes but I fell in love with this one.

Anyone should give it a try, they just might like it.

  • ecto

and i had the hopes up for tiles in this version :(
guess i’ll have to wait another year..

  • mania

played for 3 hours straight, good stuff

  • raigan

nooooooooo.. we have that stupid IGF dealine! ARARAAAAASGHH!!

Also I can’t believe that Intuition wasn’t nerfed, it totally breaks the game. Sigh.

  • Vagabond

Actually don’t think you can aim into the fog of war now.

  • raigan

Blind shooting seems to be working fine for me..

  • idn

so happy that this got updated.

  • Z

Shooting into the dark with Intuition has a major accuracy penalty – you can run out of ammo quickly unless you have plenty stocked up (at the expense of carrying medpacks and the like)

  • Sparky

Raigan, stop playing Doom Roguelike and work on your IGF submission :)

I second Allen and heartily recommend this game to anyone who is interested in roguelikes.

By the way, is it possible to move run from ‘,’ to ‘Shift?’

  • Derek

Learning how to sidestep in this game has changed my life for the better.

  • raigan

    Wait, how do you sidestep?!

Also, about shooting into the dark: do you mean actually moving the crosshairs into the black part (so that they become red rather than green)? I always just line up shots horizontal or vertical and then aim one tile away from me.. this doesn’t seem to incur any penalty. I tend to blind-shoot constantly with chaingun, shooting along walls/etc. where enemies tend to be located works very well.

Blind shooting in general is fine, it’s just that in conjunction with being able to see where all the enemies are, it sort of breaks everything..

Also, it’s pretty stupid that the mod dialog hides the rest of the screen.. what if I don’t remember which weapon/armour I have equipped? And also why is it the only dialog that you can’t escape out of?! etc.

Still this is the best yet. My only complaint is that I spent ages unlocking everything on 0.9.8.10.. there’s no way I’ll be beating some of those challenges again, they’re insane!

  • Z

Sparky: Edit your doomrl.ini to change key bindings

raigan: getting the badges required to unlock all the features isn’t that hard, the really hard badges don’t unlock anything. however, I could post a player file with everything unlocked if necessary

  • Z

Wait, I’m not sure the shift key can be assigned…

  • kalgor

    Derek: how do you sidestep?

  • Sparky

Oh, I have a bug fix request. In the Windows version, there’s some strange behavior around key repeats. If I hold down a key for a little while, but then release it, it sometimes acts as if it is still held. This is most evident in the game over screens. If I hold the button to cycle through all the game over screens, then release it, it acts as if it’s still held and starts a new game for me, on the wrong skill level. Then I have to manually quit the application (because there’s no quit option from the trait select screen, and it’s not escapable) and start a new game.
