Preview: Terraria

Little is known for sure concerning upcoming, relatively unknown yet already highly anticipated indie title Terraria, as the developer was caught unprepared when Minecraft developer Notch posted a link to the game’s trailer on his Twitter account, sending hundreds of interested gamers its way. To help introduce curious followers to the project, developer Andrew “Redigit” Spinks (of Super Mario Bros. X) has begun slowly releasing a series of gameplay videos of a co-op session between him and a dev-team member.

The videos show multiplayer arcade-style, side-scrolling action set in a randomly generated world with destructible terrain, resource gathering, a large crafting system, fluid mechanics, plenty of monsters to fight, and much more. Despite Notch’s linking to it – and many people immediately comparing it to the similar Minecraft – the gameplay and art remind me much more of the side-scrolling, resource-gathering gameplay of the CLONK series. For that reason, I for one am eagerly awaiting further information concerning Terraria.

Hi, this one looks awesome, do you know when it will be released?? =D

  • Alehkhs

There has been no word on a release date yet, however the game has been under development since January 2011.

  • OverBlob

Ok, and do you know if there is any devblog/twitter where I could follow its development? There is no link on the main page.

  • Alehkhs

Nope. There is nothing on the site yet as they were not expecting to get rushed by Notch. There is a wiki being put together by the team that will be linked from the game's site once it's ready, and there is an official FaceBook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/

Minecraft featuring Castlevania? If there is a bigger story to the game i might me interested in this game as well.

It's like people compare everything to Minecraft nowadays. But yeah, Clonk was the first thing I thought about and if it has better controls than Clonk, it's gonna be a good game. Not to say that Clonk's controls are bad but they need time to get used to.

  • Guest

If they can fix some of the other flaws Clonk had, this game has potential.

  • Raigan

It looks amazing, but… am I the only one that can't stand WASD+mouse platformers?

  • Guest

Just wish the character sprites looked a little less than drawn over FF characters.

  • Banana

this is an exact replica of minecraft

  • Gio32k

Yeah, they do look kinda like FF characters.

  • Vania

Looks like a lot of work, and its only been in development since January?
Wish I could have that kind of productivity.

  • Sigma

    @Banana
Do you even know what the meaning of an “exact replica” is? If it was an exact replica of Minecraft, it would be a 3D sandbox game with creepers. It isn't.

  • Tetronautics

I can't believe I'm the only one to say it but… Super Mario Bros. X is an amazing piece of indie software. I am ready for ANYTHING that developer puts out.

Banana, you must be new here. It's OBVIOUSLY a Cave Story clone.

  • Klayman

I hope not because I came up with a great WASD platformed idea the other day…

  • iffi

    I also don't like WASD+mouse in platformers.

Could you expand on that? Is it just that you don't like the keyboard/mouse combo, or using W for jump? Would there be another one-handed set of keys that you would like more for platforming, or is it just that you don't want to jump and walk with the same hand?

  • Guest

Funny thing that all the “exact replicas of minecraft” look so much more interesting than minecraft.

I've never played Clonk, but I do see the similarities with Minecraft. The game looks like it'll do a good job of distinguishing itself with interesting combat, so I won't be thinking of it as just some 2D clone of MC. And I don't mind the FF-style sprites, being a fan of the retro FF games. I'll most likely give the game a decent bit of playing.

  • Raigan

for me it's both “move and jump on the same hand” and “move with left hand”; I don't know why since it feels natural for FPSs, but with platformers it feels really weird to move with my left hand.

  • Consumatopia

Even though you're using WASD, the most common FPS movement is simply moving forward in the direction selected by your mouse, so I guess they aren't really comparable.

It might be helpful if the game would let you map right-click to jump. (or maybe some third party tool would let you map it to W). Sometimes I switch mouse hands to avoid fatigue, that might help.

*GASP* But… but… Nintendo didn't make it. I mean sure, SMBX is better than anything Nintendo has put out the last few years, but but but I'm a fanboy and if Nintendo made SMBX then I would say it's the greatest game ever.

In all honesty though, Terraria looks great, SMBX is fantastic. Redigit is 'da man'. I'm a bit disappointed in him for lying about the 'Nintendo's Lawyers told me to take down SMBX' fiasco… but oh well.

If people are looking for some more info on Terraria i have an interview with the creator at http://www.threequarterdpad.co

  • Beau_JC

Looks impressive. Block building games are going to be the next indie staple at this rate, but even so, this is a marked improvement on Minecraft's formula. The bosses and enemies look like they have the potential to add a lot. All the more so if they can raze structures :)

  • Rosamy

Some of the bosses are rumored to be able to destroy terrain, so.. you got your wish. :D.

  • Tiganon

Do you know what sarcasm is?

  • Tiganon

This is an exact replica of Spelunky.

  • Blue

We are in the process of removing the placeholder Sprites you see in the Trailer and LPs. We will update you on these changes when they have been completed. – Blue

  • Roten910

This is an exact replica of Halo: Reach.

  • Cam55555

Exact copy of a mix of minecraft + castlevania + maple story.
    Tada…
    actually.
It is kinda a mix of those isn't it =P
    I like that.

  • Wilkes1996

looks like 2d mine craft so why not get minecraft im not saying it doesent look fun but i rather play mine craft

  • ribbon183

Just as a sidenote, this seems really chaotic of a game, especially compared to a game like Minecraft…
