Desktop Dungeons, by QCF Design

QCF Design has just launched a website for Desktop Dungeons, the popular puzzle game inspired by roguelikes. The launch comes with announcements that 1. the team is taking pre-orders for the new version of DD (shown above), 2. the original, freeware game is receiving a small update, and 3. an official forum for the games has also been opened.

The older version won't win any awards for looks, but, um. The graphics in that screenshot look significantly more detailed, but the screen as a whole is significantly harder to scan. It looks really busy. :-(

Having an entire class just for people who shell out 75 dollars? I don't know how I feel about that business model.

Try re-reading the purchase page and which offer contains what contents.

  • alastair_jack

I'm sure it'll be fine once you play it, and get use to it.

Oh bugger, I was going to preorder but I'm getting 'internal server error' from their website's paypal button.  :(

Also saw this at the top of the buy page the first time I went there:
“Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in/home/dislekcia/qcfdesign.com/DesktopDungeons/… on line 92″

(Writing all this with hope that the QCF folks will see it)

    Brilliant news. Pre-ordered it already!

Yeah, i think i agree, would preferred simpler but animated sprites. I'm expecting a very enjoyable experience anyways.

So is it an entire class for people who shell out $20 then?  If that's the case then there's no way I'm buying this.

  • joehonkie

Paid out for the $20 fancy edition.  I would have even paid out $75 but apparently that sold out.

I've played more than enough of the free version for it to be worth that much to me.

  • WaveringRadiant

the original game was a nice little time waster, but I prefer a real roguelike any day. The new one looks like a roguelike with static monsters, it's not streamlined like the first one and is not a properly shaped roguelike. I don't really know what to think about it…

  • Syrion

On the forums they made clear that what you additionally get in the Special Edition isn't really substantial content. The extra quests and class are not very serious and much more of a “thank you” for the extra money you paid. It's just worded a bit unfortunately at the moment, especially compared to how often AAA games nowadays have lots of different version and pre-order DLCs that were originally planned to be in the game etc. etc. …

If you only want to buy the complete game for the normal price and nothing else, you can buy the normal version just fine and you're good :)

  • Syrion

The way I understand it, the new version isn't more or less of a roguelike than the original DD. It's “just” a greatly expanded and deeper version of that.
I think that's great, as I imagine all the content added inside and especially around what the original game offers will work very well.

  • Guest

No, it's an entire class to people who give an extra 10.

    Important difference.

  • Syrion

Quote dislekcia: “[…] It's literally a few extra things here and there, they'll be mostly joke
quests and the special character isn't exactly the most seriously
balanced thing in the game – quite the opposite in fact ;) […]”

What's all this fuss about business? DD is an amazing game and its developers deserve money.

  • Blodyavenger

Woah, free version realy pulled me into it…too bad I'm broke at the moment :/

  • Blodyavenger

I guess there was still some money on PayPal – DD is preordered ^^

  • Guewt

    Boo hooooo

  • Guewt

    Boo hoooooo

  • Stephen Lavelle

probably can't rely on that – you should send them an email I think :)

  • tocky

who's the artist for the new character portraits?

  • Blodyavenger

I don't know his name but QFC on their forums only pointed out his blog -> http://www.lurksoft.com

  • Battlerager
