Hawken, by Adhesive Games

Here’s an interesting G4 interview with Hawken art director Khang Le, where they show off a new stage from the game as well as a new mode, “Siege”, where players vie for resources to launch battleships against each others’ bases. According to Khang, the game will be more casual than mech games like Mechwarrior, but it won’t just be “just an FPS with a mech skin over it”. There are three types of mechs – light, medium, and heavy – and you will be able to configure your right and left-hand weapons as well as collect power-ups during the match. There are seven maps planned for the game, with five of those having unique scenery. The tentative release date is early-to-mid 2012 on various platforms.

I don't know that old diehard in me hopes they don't have too many “powerups” laying around in the levels. Makes it feel more like mario than gaints mechs shooting each other with weapons that could level buildings. I mean it's going in, and I still want the game, I just hope they do it smartly to at least keep the game serious.

    It looks pretty and all…
But what is the point of super-mecha-warrior-suits if EVERYONE has them?
I want to jump into a suit and go on a killing spree on the tiny ant-sized human oponents.

I'll give it a shot. I cut my teeth on MW2:Mercs and felt very underwhelmed by the MW4 demo back when it dropped. I knew, even then, that most of that was the nostalgia factor but it just felt more arcadey and less immersive. I liked that in MW2:M, I really felt like was piloting a weighty, unwieldy machine. I liked the feeling of panic and helplessness I got when my mech overheated and left me a sitting duck. I am encouraged by the good reviews the free version got, though.

Looks awesome! I was a fan of Armored Core back in the day so this is right up my alley.

In that case, you'll enjoy Mechwarrior 3. It was the height of MW in terms of comprehensiveness and sim aspects. If you consider the first 3 MW games, MW3 was like…the ultimate evolved form of MW before Microsoft streamlined it in 4. Though I do like the arcady feel of MW4 as well.

    No it's not!

    yes it is!
