Humble Indie Bundle 3

By: Derek Yu

On: July 27th, 2011

Humble Indie Bundle 3 has begun, with 5 new games being offered: Crayon Physics Deluxe, Cogs, VVVVVV, Hammerfight, and And Yet It Moves. As usual, the bundle is pay-what-you-want and DRM-free, and you can choose to split the money however you like between the developers and charity (Child’s Play and the EFF). All the games are available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

For many of the games, this is their debut on Mac or Linux, and bonus content has been added to Hammerfight (Survival Mode), VVVVVV (a map editor and a bonus level by Minecraft’s creator, Notch), and AYIM.

    FIRST COMMENT!!!

  • Jackko

Great, good, fun games, hammer fight looks neat, great price, cross platform, hurray!

    BUT WHY THE TERRIBLE JOKES?

  • Anonymous

“New” games with “new” definition of word “new”. :P

  • Anonymous

You didn’t need quotemarks around that middle “new”.

That said, I believe the Derek means that they’re new to the HIB treatment.

  • Solace

You should be able to customize which developer gets the money too, I mean, what if I already own one or don’t plan to play one?

  • Erd Mans

One of the Rosens said on a TigRadio episode (i think) that they have no plans to let you slide individual developers because that would become a popularity contest.  In my opinion, that also doesn’t make sense since most people wouldn’t have played all the games or else they wouldn’t be buying it.  What criteria do they have to determine which developer deserves what percent of their payment?  I think you can go back and edit it, but what’s the big deal?  So Terry gets few more bucks off you for VVVVVV.  It’s probably his title that’s drawing in a lot of the sales anyway.  That should be worth something.

Awesome! I can get it for really cheap…uh…but, no, it’s for a good cause, I shouldn’t be cheap. I should give a lot…but money’s been tight for me recently, I mean, I don’t want THEM to rip me off! So…how much is too little? How much is too much?

I guess I’m not going to get it after all.

Eh, pay what suits you.  That’s the deal.  Though I admit I’ve got similar sentiments, my bank account being nearly in the single-digits right about now.

The mascot-lineup thing isn’t working quite so well this sale.  Only two of the games feature player characters and they’re both intentionally crude in style.

Anyway.  Tell me again how the “tips” from these sales are supposed to return profits on $4.7 million dollars of investment money?  Also why in the heck this operation even needed that much capital.  (Mind your interpretation of my tone here; I’m more curious than critical for what it’s worth)

  • broAhmed

I thought they were hilarious. To each his own!

  • Lorne Whiting

I disagree with this a lot! I think a lot of people are bound to give the money to popular developers and then end up enjoying the games they didn’t know about more :X

  • Amaury Hanser

Too bad some games were in the Mega-Love Bundle.
But as always, I appreciate the spirit.

  • Someotherguy

We should be able to control how much money we give to each developer.

For example in the last two bundles there has been some games that didn’t work on my computer. Why should I even give money to those games’ developers?

  • Sylvester Ink

The main reason I support these bundles are for their support of Linux gamers.  Yes, we do exist, and if developers are willing to make games for us, then I won’t hesitate to give them my money.

  • Friedrich Hanisch

“Didn’t work” is very unspecific. Did you even mail them and ask for help?

  • Nanashi Rider

I was sincerely expecting them to say “put your junk in that box”

  • Nanashi Rider

I was sincerely expecting them to say “put your junk in that box”

  • Someotherguy

Mail them??? Saying what? “I have a windows pc, I tried your windows game and it didn’t work”?

That’s like buying shoelaces for shoes, and when you’re going to put them on your shoes, you see that they’re made them too thick for any shoes, do you call the shoelaces store to complain? NO! THEY’VE FAILED – you throw the shoelaces to the garbage can and wish they don’t get any more money from anyone else EVER!!!

    Jesus… some people.

  • Nerdbot

You mean you connected your shoes to your screen and nothing happened? I don’t get it.

  • Someotherguy

That’s exactly what happened! Now you see what my problem is??

  • http://profiles.google.com/johnevanscs John Evans

Sure, they SAY “what suits you”, but we all know they’re judging us based on how much we give.

  • Hipster Eats His Hand

I liked their older stuff better.  The sequels just are not as good as the original.

I love the idea that you can decide who gets what from the payments. Paying what you want is a nice thing too, though I would fully understand if they would set a minimum to ten bucks or something.

Anyways, I’m definitely going to purchase a few packages for my team!

  • Someotherguy

People willing to pay 10 bux will pay 10 bux! In fact linux average is 10 bux.

Did you see the sell charts?
Most money comes from people paying 5 bux. Followed by people who payed around 1 bux, which are almost 5 times more numerous.

Then there’s a small peak at 10 bux purchases, but it’s a way less popular, much less than half of people who bought it for 5 bux, you following me?  10 bux gave them much less profit.

If they had set a 10 bux minimum limit, they’d be forcing those people willing to pay around 5 bux to pay more, and that would just have drove them away, several 100s grands lost right there. Thanks a lot, genius!!!!! THANK YOU! >:-|

There’s a sweet spot in the price, where purchase amount and price gives you the most profit, and believe me it’s not 10 bux! It’s either 5 bux, or around 1 bux with 5 times as many customers. Both give you same profit, but one gives you more customers than the other. And if you ask me, people paying 1 bux are more likely to be RETURNING customers than 5 bux customers.

MEhh…. all in all… You’re way over your head man, way over your head! That’s why you’re not a millionaire like me!

  • Côme Martin

Same here, except replace “Linux” by “Mac”.

  • Kenneth

Good point you got there, mate, but you don’t have to be so condescending.

  • Nerdbot

Yeah, you should get a new oven.

  • Lilo

Too bad it includes “And Yet it Moves”.  Even though I can pay whatever I want, and can dictate WHERE the nickel I donate goes to, I would be upset being tricked into buying even a FREE copy of that terrible game ever again.

  • http://twitter.com/celluloseman Evan Balster

For whatever it’s worth, it gets a little more interesting as it goes on, though it ends abruptly afterwards.

  • meepmeep

    that’s how flamewars start

  • Jeanbaudrillard

Worst one yet. I got the other ones for a penny or free or whatever but this one’s not even worth the time from what I can tell. Cogs looks like the type of puzzle game I’ll never care enough about to play. Crayon physics is ok but I’m done with it after playing the web version a little. The VVVVVV demo sucked. Hammerfight is the probably the most attractive one for me but I don’t really care to play it. And Yet it Moves is getting trashed talked on THIS website so it can’t be a should-play much less a must-play. After burning us on the last one (incomplete games, awful bugs and broken design in Titans), and now putting together such a meh collection, the next Pharisee Indie Bundle should redeem itself with the best lineup yet to avoid losing public support permanently.

  • Jeanbaudrillard

I guess this one comes with free Minecraft? That makes it a much better deal.

  • Lilo

No it doesn’t.  It’s a ‘guest pass’ that lets you play for a couple of weeks.

  • Alex V

IMO As Yet It Moves is the best game of the five.

  • NoahPlaysHulk

I wish all of my bills came with slider bars.  Screw processing fees, lemme send that money to charity!

  • Stitch

    Trolling.

  • Someotherguy

yes I do! Am I not the king of the universe? :-0

  • JeanBaudrillard

Yeah… oh well, I already had Minecraft anyway. I ended up getting it to see if Steel Storm was any good.

  • Fred Heimann

Which so completely drove you to bankruptcy. Think about what you’re saying. You paid $.01 for five games and then complained about them. You are scum. Get off my internet.

  • Boris

“I got the other ones for a penny or free or whatever but this one’s not even worth the time from what I can tell”

    ahahaha, what a cunt

  • Slather

the voice-over guy sounds out of breath, its uncomfortable to hear. EVERYONE PLEASE STOP TRYING TO SOUND LIKE THE MOVIE TRAILER GUY!!!!!!  please!!!  please?!  It would have been much better if the whole things was in the Christopher Walken voice (but its been overdone in recent years).  U can ask people on youtube to record these and they’d sound much better, seriously.  Find out who did the SuperMeatBoy 80s commercial, that was golden.   Oh yeah, a bunch of games for cheap? score!
