Voxatron, by Lexaloffle

The alpha version of Joseph White’s voxel-based top-down shooter Voxatron was released today through the Humble Indie Bundle site (although, as you can see by the title, it’s a “humble indie debut”, and not a bundle). As with previous humble offers, you can pay what you want for the game and all future updates, including the awesome built-in model and level editors. Payment can be split as you see fit between the developer, two charities (Child’s Play and the EFF), and the Humble Bundle guys.

For more information on Voxatron’s release and its future development, check out Joseph’s blog.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a while.  Glad it’s only going to cost me $0.01

  • jimmbo

I bought 1 copies for 10$ each. Awesome game :D

  • jimmbo

    aah…, I mean 2 -.-

  • phubans

    Bought that shiz for $5.

    Should be ashamed!

if it turns out to be a bundle after all then people who pay 0.01 cents may regret it

Or they can just go back and increase their purchase amount. : )

Bought it. Played it. Played it some more. Showed it to some friends. Played it some more. Love it.

I like it, but I really hoped for a more adventure oriented gameplay for single player (Zelda-like) instead of an arena shooter.
But it’s still good and the graphics fantastic.

  • Flimflam

I want the visuals to be animated thusly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5jBjH7wZRw&feature=related

Then I’d play it. But not a moment before.

  • Rage

Great thing, I’m struggling with the controls though. Most times I end up running away from the little monsters. And I also hope it is more adventure/exploration-oriented than a plain arena shooter. But love the game, yeah.

  • phubans

On the downside, I beat the game in about 45 minutes and it seems to have very little replay value. I was hoping the adventure mode would offer a longer story, but I guess that’s to be expected in alpha.

Looks more like a tech demo than a game…

  • Erdtirdmans

It only has 3 games, so I went with $15

Actually is a bundle now with Binding of Isaac and Blocks that Matter if you payed more than site’s average (who didn’t?)

    Notice it says Alpha.

  • Edmund

Nope, you still get the games added if you purchased before the announcement, no matter what.  So 1cent = 3 games.

Nah, man, that game looks horrible. Music was ok, but the sound effects sucked!

  • Firepith

There’s this other game called 3d Dot Game Heroes that does what you’re describing with similar (ok, worse) graphics. This is just a whole lot more fun though.

  • Breadmund

    and that’s… terrible?

The Nitrome office whilst I played at lunch was all, “Oooohhh, aaaaahhhh, woah! Lookkitdat!!”

  • Bignelson

I hope it gets more control options.   Being able to shoot and move in different directions, like smash TV or geometry wars, that is if it is going to be a shooter.  However, it it becomes a more involved adventure game then the current controls will be fine. Maybe, native xbox360 controller support.

I know what you mean! I had the same thing, until I realised that you can also shoot with the numpad =)

  • Eelfroth

WASD + mouse works too, but it’s kind of unintuitive as you don’t have a cursor.
Thanks for the tip with the numpad. :-)

  • -_-

That is borderline to pirating. You shouldn’t have even commented. I consider you as scum to not even pay $1.

  • Klabelkholosh

I’d appreciate slightly tighter mouse/keyboard controls, perhaps a reticule that appears only when the mouse is in use, to make aiming a bit easier. Otherwise it’s a smorgasbord of pixel-smashing paradise

  • shooty

it already does this.  You can also use wasd to move and numpad or mouse to shoot.

  • Frostden

Half of everyone? (Retrospectively, at least).

Wow, The Binding of Isaac was surprisingly really fucking good. I spent at least 5 hours playing it last night until I was able to beat it. Will play again.

Totally agree, i’d like to play with my mouse and keyboard but a lack of reticule does make it a bit tricky. Still I do ok with just the keyboard and number pad.

  • Mfraley6

God it’s been worth the wait, I LOVE LOVE it!

  • Snow

Purchased! And happy with my purchase. Paid $15. I know that’s a low amount considering what the games are really worth, but I’ll be buying more bundles. It’s an excellent idea.

  • -___________-

I usually pay around $5 for the bundle, but there’s nothing wrong with paying 1 cent. If the developers didn’t want people to pay 1 cent, they should’ve made the minimum higher.

    That’s not how averages work…

  • Nathan Cooper

Try and remember that it would cost them more then that for the transaction. You give them 1 cent and the credit card company charges them something like 5-10 cents. Soooo….

  • Firepith

Best score so far on Voxatron Arcade Mode: 4037.

  • SuperBoyThatsWhoIm

This ‘engine’ has a lot of potential! I love it! I’ll purchase it again when it’s complete

  • Bignelson

True, I did discover xbox game pad support, and the number keys or mouse methods.  Still I would like to use the right analog stick for aiming.  Or be able to map different controls to the controller. Example, map the A,B,X,Y buttons similar to the number pad.

There are some awesome custom levels already.

  • Derek Yu

    Voxatron is boring.
