Apotheon 1

Alientrap, the two-man team behind last year’s Capsized, has just announced its next project: Apotheon. As an “an open world, action/stealth, 2D sci-fi sidescoller game,” Apotheon sports a unique art style that mimics classical Greek pottery and promises to “have both a sprawling, open-world singleplayer campaign where you climb your way to the top of Mount Olympus, gaining divine power and deadly enemies along the way,  and online multiplayer battles with tactical bronze-age combat (spears and arrows!).”

Apotheon 2

Alientrap has only revealed two screenshots at this point as well as the game’s synopsis:

“Apotheon is a 2D platform action-rpg set on the rich stage of ancient Greek mythology. Hera, the queen of Olympus, has overthrown her husband Zeus, and taken his throne as ruler of the Gods. Bitter and scornful towards the race of mortals, she launches a murderous campaign to scour them from the earth. As humanity’s last champion, you must pass through the land of the dead, infiltrate Mount Olympus, and end the wrath of the Gods. With sword, spear, and shield in hand, you will sneak, conspire, loot, and battle your way through majestic palaces and chthonic depths as you climb towards godhood. Only by stripping the old gods of their powers, and taking control of the elements as your own, can humanity hope to survive the coming oblivion.”

Oh man, that looks really good.

Whaaa, so cool! The details like age spots and material textures are great. With that giant soldier on the left it’s like we’re all the way back to Game & Watch but better.

Hmmm, looks entertaining… for about 5 seconds…!! But it wouldn’t be a big rush… I would say it’s a mild excitement, nay… mild curiosity, just to see how the keys respond, just mild, subtle curiosity. 5 seconds of that, yeah. Sure I agree, nice game.

I was hoping someone would bring this up.  I’ve been enjoying watching Hellas develop for a while now.

How about a Vita version? There should be a Vita version of every promising 2D game by law.

The “stealth” part has me worried.  One of the strangest divergences in the history of videogames was Metal Gear Solid winning out over Thief: The Dark Project.  The only game since Thief 2 that got it right was Trilby: The Art of Theft.  I worry that the art design won’t allow that kind of gameplay (no shadows).

Now THIS is interesting! We need more experimentation in art styles like this. The setup seems interesting; I hope this will turn out to be fun.

Got to admit the classically inspired graphics works much better than I’d ever expect them too. Very promising.

But MGS is great. Especially 3 and 4. Though I’ve never played Thief, you’re sounding like a bit of a Yahtzee drone… (only stealth games you like are his favourite game and HIS game)

Have you played MGS 3? It used camoflauge in a way similar to what I imagine shadows are used.

    She’s acting like a b****h, that Hera…

  • Bacontooth

BA cant wait to take down hera!

I hate to be that guy, but Greek myth is fantasy, not scifi, unless you  give it a techy make-over, ala Dan Simmons’ Illium.

  • Bram Stolk

Wow… that art theme is a brilliant idea. Bringing some Greek history back to life. Might even spark some interest in ancient history in a generation of young gamers. Execution was done pretty well… the visuals are beautiful. Well done!

  • Tiganon

I never cared for the later MGS’s so I didn’t play them and can’t attest to their gameplay, but I did watch my roommate play through them, and I have to let you know that Thief’s storylines are far better than any of the MGS storylines.  Those games just get wackier and more out of touch with physical reality with each sequel…

  • Tiganon

Yeah the art style is really the best idea here.  With the other stuff it just sounds like they’re trying too hard to cram too much stuff into one game.  I’d suggest paring down the lofty goals a little, making a good single player action game first, then you can release a separate multiplayer game after.
