Death Worm

Death Worm

Sandworms are awesome. These mythological beasts titillate the imagination. The idea of monsters living under our feet simultaneously scares us and seduces us.

Tremors. Dune. Beetlejuice. The Mongolian Death Worm. These are the stuff of NIGHTMARES.

But did you ever stop to think that, you know, they’re just animals trying to survive, just like us? Did you ever try to step in their shoes (sock?) for a moment?

Well, now you can! Death Worm lets you play as a giant sandworm, and it’s a hoot. The feeling of playing as one of these monstrous entities is artfully captured, and exceedingly fun. There’s nothing like hiding in the sand below the unsuspecting surface-dwellers, only to pop out for a frightening kill before diving back in. And the music (lifted from Streets of Rage) somehow fits perfectly with all the weirdness going on.

The surprising thing is how challenging the game is and how much timing and strategy is involved in staying alive as the waves upon waves of angry humans come hunting for you. Par excellence!

  2. Rz. said about 1 hour later:

it’d be nice to be fuckin’ ginormous like the sandworms in Dune. those mofos are like a mile long

  3. krizzle said about 1 hour later:

    really great game!

I’m just glad to be introduced to a cryptozoological animal I didn’t already know about! (The Mongolian death worm)

  5. PHeMoX said about 1 hour later:

Uuuhm just for the record, since Wikipedia doesn’t quite explain it’s an ‘urban legend’ kind of thing … :-p

But the Mongolian Death Worm should be considered to be the ‘Chupacabra’ from Mongolia …..

Still this game it’s idea is pure genius, definitely going to check it out!

  6. PHeMoX said about 1 hour later:

Woopa! Nevermind, it says ‘cryptid’ all over the place…

  7. GP Lackey said about 2 hours later:

This game cracks me up. Soaring majestically through the air, eating an entire flock of birds, and then coming down on an elephant.

The late game gets crazy with huge fleets of airplanes appearing, along with whole armies of paratroopers.

  8. rinkuhero said about 2 hours later:

That’s what I loved most about it too, eating the birds in the air.

  9. Radix said about 3 hours later:

Oddly enough, yesterday I thought “what about a game about sandworms”… and dismissed it.

  10. Chris L said about 3 hours later:

For reasons we’re still researching, the game’s humor is increased thrice-fold when you have a soundtrack of Buddy Holly music.

  11. Chris L said about 3 hours later:

Try playing with a soundtrack of Buddy Holly. The humor is instantly quintupled.

  12. Rz. said about 3 hours later:

thanks mate, i didn’t get what you were saying the first time. fuck.

  13. Radix said about 4 hours later:

Play with Buddy Holly, and you’ll find the humour is pentupled.

  14. Neon said about 4 hours later:

Play with Buddy Holly, and you’ll find the humour is sextupled. Ha sex.

  15. GP Lackey said about 5 hours later:

If you play with Buddy Holly the humour is an octagon!

  16. Twisted Rabbit said about 6 hours later:

    EVERYONE DO THE WORM!!!

  17. Gr.Viper said about 8 hours later:

Nice little game… Before the update the worm got fat pretty fast and there was little challenge in later levels. And with save/load feature I was able to feed it to fill a third of the screen.

  18. Chris L said about 8 hours later:

Dammit, inadvertent math joke death spiral. They’ll keep getting un-funny-er and un-funny-er, but zero humor will never be reached.

  19. krizzle said about 10 hours later:

stop playing around with buddy holly, hes had enough of it :[

  20. Jonathan Blow said about 11 hours later:

    This game is So Awesome.

  23. Mastatsan said about 13 hours later:

I don’t remember what it’s called, but I have a copy on my computer with a weird filename… It’s a song they played on Spongebob Squarepants, with a really happy-sounding lady singing

“things that bother you never bother me, I feel happy and fine! Living in the sunlight loving in the moonlight having a wonderful time!”

It’s hilarious to play that over and over while enjoying this game.

  24. Mastatsan said about 13 hours later:

yeah.. I totally screwed those lyrics up…. and the song’s by a person called Tiny Tim… but I swear it sounds like a lady… maybe I’m confused…

  27. trav said 1 day later:

It’s pretty fun, eventually you get aliens.

A little on the easy side though for a patient player who’s content to sulk deep beneath the desert until burrowing creatures have restored your health

  28. PHeMoX said 1 day later:

“things that bother you never bother me, I feel happy and fine! Living in the sunlight loving in the moonlight having a wonderful time!”

They should definitely make a horror movie with someone singing that song, who then get’s eaten by a giant worm! ;P
