Jay is Games is finishing off 2006 with a look at the top casual games of the year (from a slew of categories). As to be expected from those guys, it’s a really well-done affair, and all the nominated games seem deserving to be there. Anyone in the casual scene should thank these guys, because they make it seem pretty cool!
Definitely check it out!

Qwak is a pretty cool little homebrew platformer for the GBA, developed by Jamie Woodhouse. The first thing I noticed when I played the demo (requires a GBA emulator) is that the game is pretty fast-paced. The second thing I noticed is that you’re a duck who wears armor and throws its own eggs to kill furries. The third thing I noticed is that I was having a pretty good time.
Bottom line: 15 GBP for a fun platformer for your GBA (comes in an actual cartridge).
EDIT: Yes, this is a remake of the Amiga game from 1993.

Hi guys, I’m currently posting from another country but there will be little news from me for at least another month due to recent events and catastrophes. Anyway, here are two new shooters by cactus.
The Design is a 2D shooter with some unique quirks. You control two dots on a design, which can shoot at the angle from one to the other. New figures on the design appears and you earn points by removing them. This is what the shooting is for.

Note that the enemies can only be killed while they’re white. If you shoot an enemy while it’s red, the bullet will turn against you. Aside from the normal shooting, you also have three upgrades that’ll help you with getting a highscore.
Ad Nauseam is a surreal but relaxing vertical shmup that is loosely based on a trip to the dentist. Need I say more?

Gravitron is a 2D vector game, very much like old games, Thrust, Gravitar and Oids. The game premise is to destroy all reactors for each sector. Collect fuel and rescue space-men, there is some interesting maps (30 total) to explore.
This game is best played with mouse-control, but other controls are available. Be sure to configure them to suit you.
Gravitron also comes with its editor – GravED. Feel free to submit maps to the author, if there is enough then new content packs might just be released.

I’m actually quite tempted to use it’s acronym as the post title.
In Super Haunted Insomnia Tower, a little yellow mouse like thing with blue pants is hellbent on climbing up a haunted tower. The tower isn’t only a tad haunted, it’s SUPER HAUNTED, and uh them ghosts are insomniacs thus the forcibly made title.
Anyways, our little protagonist must climb as long as he can before the inevitable death picks him off. A total of 10 different fiends that chill out in the tower all have unique powers and they aren’t too happy about that damn climber. And they’re insomniacs so they are very cranky too.
The higher you get the more frequently the ghosts appear. After a certain time there can be numerous spirits bullying you at a time. Also the more higher you get the less blocks to stand on appear. So with time the difficulty increases.
Like in Ice Climber and Kid Icarus, you can warp from the left side off the screen to the right side and vice versa. This will prove handy no doubt.
While playing you get a randomly picked tune to play in the background. There’s only two so don’t wet your pants over the amount, but rather, the quality of the tunes.

Alright, Christmas has been over for a few days now… I guess it’s about time to start posting again!
Here are a collection of Christmas-themed games that came out this month. Because it’s never too late for Christmas, amirite? No, seriously, these are all pretty good – you should try them out.

“Merry Gear Solid: Secret Santa is a top down stealth action game in the vein of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series.” And that’s really a pretty accurate description of the game, I’d say. Here’s a YouTube vid of the game in action. It’s by Podunkian, the guy who’s making that Cave Story “homage,” Underside.

Holiday Hills is a fun SkiFree clone by Johan Peitz. I don’t know if there’s a Yeti in this game. I hope there is (but there probably isn’t). There needs to be an option to flip the controls in this one.

Winter Bells is an Orisinal game that has you hopping on bells with a cute little bunny. It’s basically the video game equivalent of a shining snowflake being caught by the little hands of Baby Jesus… and when Baby Jesus opens his hands the snowflake is gone and there’s a miracle to take its place.

And don’t forget this one! All the levels should be unlocked by now.

You can now download the demo and buy the game from the moonpod site.
Totally sweet.
(For those not in the know, Mr. Robot is a isometric action/adventure puzzle game, with RPG segments)
Edit: Goddamn you image, overlapping the site!

Cult Flash hit Line Rider has been acquired by InXile Entertainment (The Bard’s Tale) to be published, with “new added features,” for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii videogame consoles, with an anticipated launch date of Spring 2007.
No, really!
Now, what does this mean for linerider.org? I don’t know. The new official Line Rider site is tagged up and down with InXile’s logo, displays their copyright on the bottom, and features an entire section dedicated to don’t screw with us legal jive. Though, in actuality, they probably don’t got the stones to shut down such a massive community. Particularly one they plan to milk dry.
I wonder just how much Mr. Cadež got for this deal. I hope InXile didn’t pull a Platypus.
