Preview: “Kitty RPG”

By: Brandon McCartin (BMcC)

On: February 25th, 2009

Kitty RPGBernie, one of my favorite freeware developers (take a look at TIGS history), is working on his first RPG. At least, I hope he is! There hasn’t been any news since it was announced, but, assuming he finishes it (as Bernie is wont to do), it will be “simple, colorful, and easygoing.” To contrast these dark times we live in.

The game is tentatively titled “Kitty RPG” as it stars the kitty from A Game With A Kitty, which seems to get linked to in any post that so much as mentions Bernie.

In case you missed it, you can find A Game With A Kitty here.

Treasure Hunter Man

Treasure Hunter Man

Bernie just released a slightly-unfinished platformer, titled Treasure Hunter Man (formerly known as “Yoghurt”). The game is completable, although Bernie acknowledges that he “rushed it a little and the last few levels aren’t all that grand. I can not finish this the way I wanted to.” Regardless, if you enjoyed Bernie’s other platform games, like A Game with a Kitty, you’ll probably dig this!

I did get stuck early on in the game, and, just because of the way it’s set up, I imagine other people will, too. Here’s a hint: if you can’t make the jump, try looking around elsewhere. Use your sword.

Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon

Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon

I could type the title of this game all day. (Which is fortunate, because it takes all day to type.) Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon (gasp!) is a new platformer from Bernie that, according to Bernie himself, is “not much different than the other games [he’s] made.” Which is to say a well put-together retro experience with it’s own special something sprinkled on top.

Stargirl was made in only two weeks, so it’s rather short and there are still a few kinks to be ironed out, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s got a definite SMB2 vibe. Oh, and before you ask, this game is in addition to the other two projects he’s got going… way to go, Bernie!

Yoghurt

ATTN: This is a whole screenshot.

Bernie time!

So, in addition to ‘A Game with a Star’, Bernie is working on a new platformer, apparently codenamed Yoghurt. (But possibly actually called Yoghurt.)

Normally I would be concerned with a developer taking on two projects at once like this, but Bernie’s proved time and again he’s man enough for the job.

As it stands now, ‘A Game with a Star’ is still a while off. Bernie says he’s been too busy with non-internet stuff — more specifically, “a relationship.” (Ooooh.) Good news is, Yoghurt’s already 2/3rds done! Delicious.

A Game with a Star?

Here are some details on Bernie’s next game (A Game with a Star, maybe?) from his site:

A) It was originally going to be a more “exploratory platformer,” but now it’s going to be much like AGwaK 1 and 2.

2) Borrowing from his adventure titles, the game will have dialog options and an inventory.

In his own words: “So all in all, it’s going to be more of the same. Gaining abilities, hidden power-ups, and a few secret levels. I’m afraid you’ll only like this if you liked my other platformers.” Good thing I did!

Mark this release down as ANTICIPATED.

The Bernie Situation

Bernie puts the '?!' in 'VIDEOGAMES?!'Bernie, creator of such classics as A Game With a Kitty, Darkside Adventures, and Reactor 09, has been busy lately. He got himself a new ISP, moved into his own place, redesigned his site, and best of all… started work on a new game!

I would give you a link, but that screenshot is literally all that’s been made public at this point. I imagine it’s going to turn out great, though!

Let’s hope these new things add up to another successful year for our man Bernie.

Reactor 09

Oh man, bad news.

Tim said I could post this one, which means I must post this one or he will find me.

So Bernie‘s new graphic adventure is out! It’s called Reactor 09 and as it turns out it is “mature,” as was foretold.

The game has you playing as a scientist convicted of murder trying to escape a doomed prison with the help of a CO. Throughout the game your decisions will affect the officer’s trust level and, as a result, the arc of the story. There are four different endings in all, though apparently the game itself is pretty short.

Now, Bernie claims he’s not happy with it, but I think he’s probably just nervous with it being his first “adult” title.

Left-click to walk and right-click-and-hold to manipulate the environment, ala Full Throttle. Enjoy!

Darkside Adventures is the latest platformer by Bernie where… who am I kidding, does anyone actually require an explanation of what this game is about?

Bernie is your Pixel from the West. And I’m officially the laziest TIGSource editor around. Plus it’s amazing that you’re still reading this article instead of going over to origamihero.com and grabbing the sequel to A Game with A Kitty.

Okay, since you’re still here – how about we review TIGSource’s Titanion high scores? Your top five:

2. 259536 raigan

3. 246838 dessgeega

Due This Year: Darkside Adventures, Reactor 09

By: Brandon McCartin (BMcC)

Seriously amusing maybe?Bernie of FA Fame announced today (okay, yesterday) that he will release not one, but two freeware games this year. The first being Darkside Adventures, which you already know about, and the second being Reactor 09, a graphic adventure with probably very amusing dialog. Or it might be serious, I dunno. Looks sharp, either way!

Hm. I just realized that maybe we haven’t posted about Darkside Adventures.
Stars!!

Well then! Darkside Adventures is a SMB2-inspired platformer that looks to be extra groovy. According to the site, its “defining features” are:

– Running up walls
– Shooting stars
– Blue guy in pajamas
– Stars!!

So there you have it.

Skyhammer

Skyhammer

Ah, the Metroidvania / Castleroid / Roidcastle / Metrocastle game… when they were in vogue in the freeware community, you’d see announcements for one of these pop up like every month at least. But the projects got scrapped faster than you could say “non-linear platforming action-adventure RPG.” Seriously, where the fuck is Chaos Gate? That game looked pretty sweet.

Skyhammer is another fatality in the now-dwindling (I think) Castlemetro genre. Which is a shame, because like A Game with a Kitty (the creator’s previous release which you can find by the same link), this game boasts some very well-executed gameplay. The ~45 minutes that there is of it, at least. Check it out.
