Pixeljam‘s Rich Grillotti, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at GDC this year, wrote me to let me know that Part 3 (the final part) of his “”http://www.gamedev.net/reference/art/features/pixelart1/“>Creating Minimal Pixel Art with Photoshop” tutorials for Gamedev.net, is now up. The tutorial is a great introduction to both pixel art and Photoshop, for the non-artist. Plus it’s filled with all manner of fun little examples!

Their latest masterpiece-in-progress, Dino Jam, should be coming out soon.

An entertaining read with pretty examples, but it feels like unnecessary expounding on a topic that should be simple. An alternate version of the tutorial:

    1) OPEN MSPAINT,
    2) ZOOM,
    3) PIXELS!!~!

It took me quite some time to appreciate pixel art because of its very rough texture as opposed to smooth lines. But it all looks so raw which is beauty.

Pixel art is hardly simple – though I admit that I was somewhat underwhelmed by this tutorial.

    shorter, more simple and good:

You know, an entire generation grew up knowing pixel art simply due to technical limitations. But now that we have more powerful hardware, I wonder what would happen if we didn’t use squares. Has anyone tried hexagonal pixels?

  • Joseph

Whoa Shih Tzu you just made my head A-splode!
