The Spirit Engine 2 Arriving in July

By: Derek Yu

On: June 24th, 2008

Josh Whelchel wrote to inform me that you guys helped raise over $800 for his cancer drive. That’s wonderful news!

And there’s more: The Spirit Engine 2, the long-waited sequel to Mark Pay’s much-loved RPG, is slated for a July 30th release, as revealed by the teaser above. There are also two older videos (1|2) that demonstrate the game’s combat system.

TSE2 will not be freeware, like its predecessor, but the final price is unknown. For more info, head to the official website.

Congrats, guys!

That preview wasn’t much, but I’m SUPER stoked for that game. SE has some GODLOVELY pixel art, and I bet the soundtrack is going to rule, too.

Now I gotta go back and play the first one again just to curb my hunger. DAMN!

  • awkturtle

This soundtrack will be brilliant. Enough said.

  • RayRayTea

The first one was too complicated for me, looks like this one is even more complex than the first part… oh well might give it a try anyway.

  • trav-tard

    ZOMG FR1ST pos!!1!1!eleven!1!

  • xerus

Josh, please make more epic Bonesaw remixes :)

    This stuff rocks.

  • gamecreator

Agreed with RayRayTea but despite that, I appreciate them going down the less-traveled path of intensifying strategy instead of action, even if it’s not for me.

  • moon_rabbits

    ohhhhh sweet jesus yes.

  • alspal

First one was an incredible experience, looking forward to this.

Totally loved the first one! Probably my favorite freeware RPG.

Totally going to buy the second one!

  • Nillo

I think trailers are pretty cheesy most of the time. But the game itself is going to kick ass, there’s no doubt about that.

Wow, 3 hours of music? :o

  • Jean-Sebastien

I like it when creators use the abismal “Over X Years In The Making” line.

Unless you post your work habits for us to judge how hard you work, it doesn’t mean anything IMHO!

  • ChevyRay

I think it would be even more abysmal to say “Over 4 years — about 10 hours every week, and nothing accomplished from the months of March-May of the 2nd year — in the making!”

At the least it means something to the creator. I find it just interesting to know how long it took to make the game, though I agree that it’s not much of a promotion factor.

Call me a horny idiot, but the first immediate thought when I saw that screenshot was “giant nipple”.

So, now that I said that, you’re finally free to post your “same for me” comments.

If that’s the kind of giant nipple you’ve been getting, then I feel sorry for you.

So now that I said that, everyone can post their “I do too” comments.

  • John

I thought it had to do with the cancer, haha.

And I love Josh’s music. Been a fan since his wee years as a tiny Acoder with funny mod-like MP3 tracks, and yet they were still gold. The kid’s got talent. And don’t even get me started on MarkPay. They’re quite a duo.

  • superflat

This looks like a mind-blowing game.

  • Krux

Shure the trailler looks cool, but I played the first spirit engine, and I didn’t like it. All playable characters were ugly, and the Gamplay was too one-dimensional. It is a 2D sidescroller RPG, this means you can’t jump. Not beeing able to jump in such a world extremely limits your possibilities in a game, you walk the Road, and then there comes an opponent, but it is absolutely impossible to avoid any of those enemies, and that sucks. I want a world where i can do more than just walk left or right.

  • ZeHa

@ AdamB: It was only for the first second. After that, I also realized that it would be a very “sorry” nipple ;)
