Iji Trailer

By: Derek Yu

On: August 10th, 2008

Daniel Remar, who is well-known for Castle of Elite, Hero, and Garden Gnome Carnage, has just released a trailer for Iji, his latest project. Iji is a platformer that’s reminiscent of Out of This World and Flashback. The game is slated for a September 1st release and will be freeware.

Great video! I especially like the part where the Iji “sabotages” her opponent’s gun. Makes me wonder what else she can do with her hacking skills!

TIGdb: Entry for Daniel Remar

  • Hmm…

    Braid Rip-Off – Which is a Cave Story Rip-Off!

  • Hmm…

Actually it looks fun. I loved the old Out of this World and Flashback games.

This I might buy for $15 dollars. Definitely want to try it first and see how well it plays though.

  • ZeppMan217

    Agree with Hmm… for 100%

  • Dominic White

Looks like a hybrid of Flashback and Advent Rising. Not a bad combination at all, in my opinion.

Not too keen on the main characters animation. There’s none of the Flashback/OOTW inertia to her movements, but the gameplay does look interesting, and some of the enemy combat animations are cool.

  • Fishy Boy

I like how there isn’t that Flashback style inertia. It’s an action game, and if they gave it those controls it would be REALLY annoying. As it is now, it animates nicely and looks like good fun. I really liked how the “head” of the turret she kicked actually bounced off of an enemy’s head. It’s a neat touch.

  • Towerofprostitutes

I can’t wait to play this.

  • Dusty Spur

This looks like it’ll be really fun. Of course, it’s hard not to look fun when you kick the head off a turret.

  • Elmernite

    Agreed with Dusty Spur.
I look forward to this game.

  • Cobalt

Cave Story ripoff, huh? Yeah, looks pretty sidescrolly… with weapons.

  • Joseph

Looks fantastic! Love all of the tiny details packed into it. I wanna play!

  • Koholint

I’m not a big fan of the graphics, but it looks like a pretty nice game.

  • Victo

    Can’t wait o_o

  • Splinter

Graphics are lame programmer art but surprisingly functional.

  • trey

The main characters animation is just… too bad. I can’t stand poor animation. The rest seems cool though.

  • alspal

I was thinking about what happened to this game yesterday.. since I hadn’t seen it in a couple of years and now it suddenly shows up.

  • Petri Purho

That looks pretty sweet. Can’t wait to play it.

Daniel also a bunch of totally awesome, complete and unfortunately unreleased games on his hard drive. We have to pressure him to release those. I had change to play some of them at No More Sweden and I’d love to see him release them.

  • Jimbob

And I thought you said “We have to pleasure him to release those…”, how disappointing. :S

  • reallyjoel

I know that he can be very, very hard to pleasure. Believe me, I’ve tried.

  • http://gnomeslair.blogspot.com/ gnome

Not bad, not bad at all.

  • Foppy

Nice animation and effects. Funny how she quietly ducks and waits for that turret to stop shooting, then stand up and kick its head off. :)

  • Cory

Sweet, just in time for my birthday

  • Diogo Ribeiro

Actually, that looks a bit more like Metroid than Out of This World, the latter only being somewhat more noticeable in the cutscenes.

  • Hmm…

No, it looks more like Flashback than Metroid, but what’s important is it that it doesn’t play like Flashback. It was a great game at the time but that precise running and jumping / timing (same as in OOTW) is just tedious to me now. This actually looks like a lot of fun though. In fact this almost looks like a cross between Flashback and Trilby Art of Theft (by Yahtzee), but that’s mainly because of the graphics. The game looks like it has some extremely interesting and unique mechanics though. I can’t wait to try this one out.

  • Guest

Looks excellent, reminds me somewhat of System Shock 2 with upgrades and hacking. Very professional trailer also, I enjoyed the music.

  • Carnivac

Been looking forward to this game for ages now. Can’t wait.

  • ZeppMan217

    OFFTOP: forum is dead?

  • Jad

    Man, this is looking ace.

Or rather, feeling ace, moving ace and having ace timing.

It doesn’t, actually, look that good. The art direction feels a bit bland, with a lot of flat surfaces and loads of pillow-shading here and there. Also, colors seem to be a bit here and there, I don’t feel the sceneries.

The beautiful play between light and shadow in for example the laser-in-clouds-scene would have been nice to see put in practise within the game (grammar anyone?)

So yeah, art-wise, anatomy is off, shapes seem undefined…

… But it moves oh so well! It’s like it’s a lot of undefined shapes which define themselves through movement. I’m just a little sad the shapes themselves don’t look as good.

And yeah, sorry, but I don’t feel the colors at all. I don’t get any emotional reaction to colors, there’s like a lot of variants of gray and brown and pastel everywhere and virtually no contrast… It’s too simple, and then it’s arranged into complex sceneries without, it seems, much underlying thought.

Aw man, I sound so harsh ): I’m not trying to be un-pep, it’s just that EVERYTHING ELSE looks so goddamn awesome, I just wish the quality of the graphics were up to the standards of, say, flashback or super metroid.

    Anyways, looks- er- moves wonderfully!

  • Jad

to THE colors, I mean. D:

  • Codemonkey

    This looks insanely fun.

  • Petri Purho

Daniel, please tell us how can we pleasure you to release your games…

  • Stij

Graphic style looks kind of weak, but the animation and gameplay seem really promising.

  • Jay

    looks awesome =)

  • http://www.casualexplosion.com Uesugi

Looks awesome, even though count me in as someone who finds the characters a bit bland.

Love those big-assed screen-shaking energy beams.

  • Ultimortal

Thanks for the comments everyone. Since the game is so close to release there’s not much I can change, but I’ll likely be going back to small pixel-graphics in my next game since I’m more confident with that, or get an artist if I’m doing something like this again. I also agree it looks like a bit like “programmer’s art” (and is, since many larger effects are drawn with colored lines, polygons and stuff), but I hope the fluidity of the graphics and special effects helps remedy the problem. I’m more concerned about what people will think of the cutscenes, the tutorial, the voice acting… so don’t get your hopes up too high now. :p

My main influences for the game were System Shock 2, SNES Alien 3 and Another World. It’s mostly similar to SS2 though, with the upgrades you choose, logbooks and hacking. The game’s not really original in any way, and testers give conflicting feedback sometimes (you can’t please everyone), but I hope many people will enjoy it, and enjoy discovering how much there is to do.

Petri: I have a habit of only releasing games when I think they’re “good enough”… that said, nothing’s keeping me from working on the little demos I showed you and turn them into proper games in the future.

  • MDK

Amazing music and.. cool looking gameplay. Can’t wait. The rapid-fire green rifle looked sweet, as did explosions knocking down the player. I caught some glimpses of bosses with weapons filling most of the screen too.. ;)

  • grabladon

i think it’s funny how people always try to say things are a cave story rip off. all i could think about was how this looks like a chick who could give samus a run for her money.

  • wormguy

    This looks so sexy.

  • MDK

“i think it’s funny how people always try to say things are a cave story rip off. all i could think about was how this looks like a chick who could give samus a run for her money.” They are joking, mate. It’s a Tiger Meme.

  • Jad

It’s the most boring meme since 4chan’s “is this rei?”. It’s like a robotic reaction to EVERYTHING, and no one is laughing ): It’s like the world will end if no one blurts out “CAEVSTRYRPPOFF” about every game.

    Booo-ring D:<

  • http://lumberingdream.com/ !CE-9

@Jad: after my own heart. actually, all of the Jad post above (I’m gonna end my post, redirect my mail and income, then move to a remote island).

now, for some reason I keep watching the trailer again and again and again. the whole game has some intangible coolness about it. it’s not the best thing we ever saw, but it’s rather good alright. gotta love the rocket jump through the window.

  • http://tricorne.blogspot.com/ Kekskiller

Holy sh, this is cool! Looks like they ripped off the space pirates from metroid and added several commercial shooter features. Nice stuff, can’t wait to play!

  • Diogo Ribeiro

“Hmm: No, it looks more like Flashback than Metroid”

Which of those two games has a female protagonist with multiple abilities and character umpgrades, and a clear focus on combat and exploration? It’s certainly not Flashback, since combat in it ranged from incidental to absolutely mandatory for certain sequences in the game; it doesn’t use abilities like those demonstrated in the video; and Conrad is anything but female, barring the possibility of some warped fanfiction. Even exploration in it was pretty condensed and often linear, as it was more about a subtle approach to puzzle games crossbred with platforming.

  • Cranky

I also keep watching the trailer over and over again. It’s not that this game has some awesome graphics, but the overall gameplay seems to be pretty awesome and I really enjoyed the old metroid games, this somehow reminds me of them. Can’t wait to play this :)

  • Diogo Ribeiro

I have to agree; it looks very interesting. Keeping an eye on it :)

  • RayRayTea

The trailer looks promising (except visually, sorry ;_;), and did you say freeware yuuppiii!!!!

  • Dan MacDonald

Reminds me of games I dreamed of making when I was 13. Ahh the memories :) It’s nice to see someone go back and actually make a “dream” game like that. One where you take all the parts of your favorite games but do your own thing with it. Really cool.
