Calamity Annie

Kinda missed this last week because the panda got sick, but Anna “Auntie Pixelante” Anthropy has released her Wild West-themed game, Calamity Annie. In the game you play the titular Annie, a gunslingin’ gal who’s seeking the bounties on the heads of 25 bad hombres – real low down dogs like Mad Dog Coyote and, er, Urban Yeti!

Calamity Annie

Calamity Annie is a reflex game reminiscent of the “Quick Draw” minigame from Kirby’s Adventure, although in Annie you use the mouse to pull the crosshairs from your “holster” and shoot the bad guys. It does a great job of emulating the feeling of drawing a pistol! You can also disarm your opponents for a big bonus by shooting their gun out of their hand.

The game has a lot of neat touches that make it a very enjoyable and memorable game. And it’s definitely the most polished and ambitious of Anna’s efforts thus far. Great work!

It should be noted that the game was recently updated with bugfixes and a few additional hombres. Auntie has also put up a development diary for those who are interested.

The game is interesting to play with a graphics tablet.

Actually I wonder how it’d work with a touch-screen interface. It might be too easy that way, though.

Since the quick draw minigame was mentioned, that was one of the little things I loved about Kirby’s Adventure. I think that was one of the best games I ever owned for a NES. I used to reset so I could play that minigame over and over. :)

To stay on topic, if this game is reminiscent of that, I’m definitely checking it out.

It’s really nice to see that some designers haven’t lost touch with the more simpler concepts.

    Thank you for posting this.

    It’s Wild Gunmen with lesbians.

  • Bad Sector

Nice, but if this trend of using smaller and smaller resolution in games continues, you might as well feature DEFENDER of the Favicon:

I get that its faster to make content for these resolutions, but shouldnt a line be drawn somewhere?

  • BeamSplashX

Or perhaps Wild Lesbians with gunmen.

  • Gainsworth

Hee, I like. Tres charming, and gets verily tense around the end. Damn you Lucky Devil!

  • Biggerfish

This was great. Didn’t get all that far but enjoyed what I played. Simple way to create a tense atmosphere too.

YES! this is my type of game!
I LOVE the feeling of the big gun hanging on my leg.
Why don’t they make more games like that? :(

  • Eponymouse

Is that supposed to be a joke?

  • man-hating dyke

NO.Why do you hate me you testosterone filled bag >:(

It’s a great game, love the atmosphere and the mechanic(s). Also the progressive story thing is really neat — the plot with that woman you meet has progressed for me each time I’ve seen her over four different games and I’ve only reached the second encounter part once.
