Ohrrpgce games, as I noted in the Wandering Hamster post, are generally kind of bad, but there are a few that might be worth playing, and you can always get a smidgen of good from any game. Here I’ll highlight a few of the ones I’ve particularly enjoyed.

Because there are quite a few of these I’ve put them under “the jump” (I’ve never used “the jump” before, let’s hope it works!)

Sword of Jade by Charbile and Fyrewulff is a lengthy (25+ hour) RPG with a lot of philosophy and furries. It can be very hard at first, but if you don’t give up after the first area it gets easier. If you enjoyed games with a lot of text and convoluted plots (like Xenogears or Planescape: Torment) you can enjoy this game. It’s personally my favorite Ohrrpgce game, but others feel it’s overrated, it’s very dependent on one’s tastes.

Vikings of Midgard by Fenrir-Lunaris is an RPG with a Norse mythology setting, and has some of the best pixel art I’ve ever seen on the Ohrrpgce.

Boundless Ocean is by Hardi Gosal (Orchard-L), the author of Missing and Fedora Spade. Boundless Ocean is an adventure game with RPG elements. I think it’s an interesting game, especially the storytelling and visualization, and just the sheer the idea of playing a game set in the afterlife (God and Buddha are characters you meet there).

Walthros by PHC has fairly rudimentary graphics, but don’t let them scare you away, it’s a long game with an interesting story, and one of the better games on the Ohrrpgce.

Wingedmene by Komera Waddi is an unfinished but lengthy traditional high-fantasy RPG. Well, at least the mechanics are traditional, the story surrounds a playable character who looks like this (I think that’s cute). I helped Komera with some of the game, the battle balance and one of the dungeons, but she did most of the work. It’s a very traditional RPG: if you liked the first Final Fantasy game, this game plays a lot like that, difficulty level and all.

Keep in mind these are old games so they may not work on your computer; if they fail to work, you can try downloading the newest version of the Ohrrpgce game runner and running the game’s .RPG file through that. Some of them might not even come with that game runner, so it’s a good idea to pick it up anyway.

    Whoa-what-where’d this come from?

8 hours ago? This wasn’t here even 30 minutes ago! I feel swindled.

I feel a little sad that the rest of Orchard-L’s games are not there. They’re really the creme-of-the-crop in my opinion when it comes to the OHRRPGCE engine.

Purgatory is a difficult RPG with a complex story. It shares features with Boundless Ocean in the regard that it too has an ‘item creation to overcome obstacles’ mechanic, except resources are limited- not to the point that the game is unbeatable, but to the point where you’re reminded that you’re playing a “Survival Horror RPG”- and it works.

City of Dreams is an exploration and puzzle RPG, again, with a complex story (saying anything else would spoil it). There isn’t much to say about it gameplay-wise, but the puzzles presented withing and the environment itself are interesting- not to mention that one of the characters (and the plot itself) have a cameo in Boundless Ocean.

A word of warning: If you started playing these games already without OHRRPGCE’s “game.exe”, your saves will lose information (namely, your inventory) every time you use the game runner to run them. Either start over or simply deal with the full-screen. None of these games gave me problems on my TabletPC, running Windows XP, but I assume that Vista users might encounter some issues with sound not playing right.

I may add another set or two of Ohrrpgce games later and include them, there are a lot I had to leave out due to limited space and time (it takes time to track down all the links and images etc.)

About the 8 hours ago thing, I think that’s a time zone difference, whenever I post them it always says 8 hours ago.

    Arfenhouse!!!!!!!11!!1 two

I remember playing Ends of the Earth as a kid and enjoying it, though the sequel was pretty unplayable.

  • Paul Eres

I liked both Ends of the Earth games, although I think they or at least the second one ripped graphics from Breath of Fire 2 or something, which got annoying when I noticed it. But they were among the first Ohrrpgce games to actually be completed, with an ending.

  • Valkyrie

I’m up to my eyeballs in RPGs thanks to Fallout 3, The Witcher (still workin’ on it), Gothic from GoG, and now these! I need to pick up the pace.

    Kudos again, Paul!

Hearing Xenogears compared to Torment makes me want to vomit. Just saying.

Vikings of Midgard is pretty fun, anyways!

I used to play one that was on AOL’s game repository. It was called Heart of Riva, or something like that (the abbreviation was HoR). It focused around a group of psychic soldiers who stumble across a strange device in the mountains and are catapulted across the universe. Anyone have a link to it?

  • Paul Eres

As far as I know Heart of Riva is one of those “lost games” that disappeared off the face of the internet and nobody any longer has a copy. If anyone actually does have a copy send it to me and I’ll host it.

  • ElTipejoLoco

There’s only one mention I could find of Atomic Knights: Heart of Riva- and it was at the following URL, with no download link.

I’m not in my dorm right now, but if anyone feels like firing up ye olde wayback machine and searching… May the following list of games be useful to ye:

Another such lost game is Project Ascension, although I guess that never got finished. It had beautiful graphics and this worldmap with tiny characters…

  • Scott

Xenogears and Torment weren’t compared, he just said they both have a lot of text.

  • Paul Eres

Yes, I didn’t mean to say that their quality was equivalent, just that they both involve a lot of reading and have convoluted plots.

  • Dusty Spur

    Alright, my bad for misinterpreting.

I didn’t know there was an Arfenhouse game! Sweet!
