Turkey of Death

Quick note: Data Realms is having a Black Friday sale for Cortex Command. The popular squad-based action/strategy physics game is $9 over the weekend, which is half-off its normal price. And with build 22 having just come out, there’s no better time. Buying the game now will entitle you to all the updates through the end of the first campaign.

Hope everyone who got to eat turkey last night enjoyed it. There’s a lot to catch up on and I promise I’ll get to it soon!

  • ADAMSKI

Id love to see turkeys with weaponry in the PETA Turkey farm cruelty videos, they’d pwn the men with head-bashing sticks.

  • Gainsworth

What’s all this Black Friday then? Never heard of it myself. Is it an American thing?

  • Tantan

    YES, just bought it.

    Isn’t today Buy Nothing Day?

  • http://studioeres.com/games/blog Paul Eres

    It’s an American thing.

“NEW YORK – A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday when “out-of-control” shoppers desperate for bargains broke down the doors at a 5 a.m. sale. Other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man, and customers shouted angrily and kept shopping when store officials said they were closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.”

  • I Like Cake

I wish one day would go by without a reminder that the society we inhabit is desperately, incurably insane.

  • MikeK

That turkey with the helmet/rifle is frickin awesome!

  • Alex

Paul Eres: it’s an American thing alright. That paragraph makes me sick, it so well describes the wastes of life that so many are.

And ever thought about the word ‘consumer’? It so reeks of individual and intellectual nothingness!

  • http://studioeres.com/games/blog Paul Eres

Yeah. I think people forget that half of economics is being a “producer” rather than a “consumer”. There’s too much emphasis on using up stuff, and not enough on creating stuff. A lot of people focus their lives on consuming stuff created by others rather than on creating stuff for others.

(But even being a consumerist who creates nothing is no excuse to trample someone in a rush to do it, of course. I think that incident has as much to do with the mob mentality as with consumerism.)

  • Koroviev

We go to work to earn the money to buy the food to get the sustenance necessary to go to work to earn the money to buy… ad infitum (ad nauseum).

  • Nikica

Arne does it again, that turkey with the AK-47 is so cool.

  • Skofo

Woo! Buying. I’ve been following the progress of this for a while now.

  • NoWay

as long as they want a valid telephone#: no deal

  • RayRayTea

    valid telephone# haha

  • PHeMoX

Yes! Awesome art by the way.

  • Skofo

NoWay: They haven’t called me so far. I don’t think you have much to worry about, the required phone number is very probably because there’s an option to pay via your phone. If you’re that worried, just put in a fake one?

  • Skofo

Also, this game may be very glitchy, but that’s why it’s so fun. Start a Death skirmish in the physics test level, put your base underground or in the air, and watch it rain rockets that accidentally kill their passengers right after they throw them out. It’s very soothing.

  • Jay

    Just bought it =)

I’m recently spending some $$$ on Indie games, just bought Zompocalypse a few days ago…..

btw i higly recommend 2 buy world of goo =)

  • http://studioeres.com/games/blog Paul Eres

The telephone number they ask for is usually just to verify the credit card. It’s hard to verify that a credit card is real without matching the telephone number someone lists to the one on the card itself. They’re not going to call you, they just want to make sure the card isn’t stolen.

    RE: the Walmart thing

I wouldn’t be surprised if Walmart had some super limited time price-slashing sale and this happened in a poor small town where Walmart has already succeeded in stomping out the local competition. Considering that Walmart sells things like food, clothing, and other necessities, and the likelihood in this economy that many of these people were out of a job, it’s a little harder to roll your eyes at them for “refusing to stop consuming.”

Psh! Just because you could get an extra two weeks supply of food for the same price if you act fast before supplies get cleaned out you refused to stop shopping??? You bourgeois pigs!

Also, I’ve heard at least once before about people being trampled and seriously injured thanks to a Walmart limited time sale in a poor city. You’d think the company would want to blunt the profit spike somewhat in order to implement safety measures to prevent a repeat of something like that. Right?

Look up “Hands on a hard body” to really get an idea of how some companies like to make poor people beg.

  • Mischief Maker

    Btw,

DRM is a real sticking issue for me. Is it just a regular offline password unlock, or am I going to have to register with an online server for the full game?

  • Tantan

Step 1: Buy a rocket and fill it with as many crabs as you possibly can.
Step 2: Set the landing position near your enemy’s base.
    Step 3: ????
    Step 4: PROFIT

  • MikeK

Mischief Maker: Yeah my friend told me yesterday that he went down to the local Walmart to pick up a shop-vac. The store is VERY large for an incredibly small and poor/poverty-stricken town. Theres nothing for miles around either.

He said it was scary! Loads of tension.

he said: “people were almost throwing down over guys cutting in line”

  • MisterX

Seemingly rather by the way now: Yay, I own Cortex Command! What a pleasure to see the dozens of mods I will install these days!

  • Data

Mischeif Maker: You can register and play completely offline, no problem.

  • Shrimp

Well, just bought it but despite a large amount of very cool things about it, I was pretty disappointed I’m afraid.
Why do the characters’ legs collapse all the time? Am I missing a trick? Clearly there are a lot of fans, so it seems like I must be.

  • Kenzya

I got it with trial pay. Now, I have to call up an indian service center to cancel my Realplayer SuperPass Free Trial Subscription

    Live and learn :(

  • http://0xdeadc0de.org/ Eclipse

DAMN, it doesn’t work, it just says that there are not supported resolutions. :((

  • undertech

Shrimp: The stock characters are pretty fragile. It’s just they way that are right now. You can either modify their parameters yourself or downloaded modded ones that are much more durable. I wouldn’t be squeamish about modding the game if that’s not usually your thing: CC is pretty much all about modding since there’s precious little 1st party content as you might have noticed.

Eclipse: You might have to edit Base.rte/Settings.ini and manually enter a resolution that works. If no fullscreen ones work for you, set Fullscreen = 0 and enter a resolution smaller than your desktop. It’s not necessary to have fullscreen with this game as performance won’t get any better that way. (you can also blow it up some if you choose a really small windowed resolution with the Nxwindowed setting where the value is the integer multiple of the zoom)

  • undertech

Think of the stock characters as the lander in that lunar lander game…if you go down too fast and too hard, they’re going to suffer.

  • http://0xdeadc0de.org/ Eclipse

thanks undertech, now i can buy it :P
