The first-ever TIGSource dualcompo is upon us! The themes are Adult Games and Educational Games, and you can choose to do one or the other… or BOTH! The compo officially starts tomorrow, and you have six flippin’ weeks to come up with an idea and implement it. Start your entry today, before the game burnings begin!

I’m curious to see which submissions will effectively make it clear that games do pertain cultural and artistic value…especially when it comes to adult education. :)

Yeah, because for some reason violence is considered ‘worse’ than adult content… even though violence IS clearly adult content.

It’s pretty mindfcking when it comes to the sense behind censoring virtual violence anyway, as the 8 ‘o clock news tends to be far more violent and more realistic (as it’s actual real) than any game that ever got released anyway.

Of course 16 year old kids get to watch very violent movies still…. but not games. Why’s that?

Anyways, guess indie gaming doesn’t really care.

Yup, and some might hate me for saying this, but American students that come here tend to be quite slutty because of it when there’s no social control and stupidity when it comes to sex (where people seem to be perfectly fine marching their garden with rifles ;) ), so I don’t think censorship, of any kind, is good at all.

I’ll apologize in advance for having made this comment here, but it’s just a striking difference in uhm the social paradigm.

Those that say germany doesn’t have a problem with sexual content really should get themselves up to date with way the government is moving in.
In the case of adult content, the german government and some Internet Providers (Arcor) try to fight it by demanding a completely failsafe age verification and hammering lawsuits all over places that don’t have one. Sidenote: In the eye of the law no currently available age verification system is good enough to meet the requirements, not even your Personal ID as you could have faked it. Some time ago Arcor blocked off all access to websites with sexual content (although they managed to find themselves the center of a giant storm and had to backpedal).

Nonetheless, along with the recent censorship infrastructure, several politicians have once again demanded that apart from Child Pornography and violent Videogames, sexual content has to be banned as well.
Ah, and they want to protect traditional Print Magazines by limiting what you can do with an online Magazine.

And something very funny:
They’re even thinking about blocking off access to Twitter on the day of the election because “undecided voters might be mobilized”. It’s funny because Twitter is the only thing most of the Politicians ever heard about and think since they use it, they know the Internet. :D

It has more to do with just being outside your normal environment: you behave differently, and people respond to you differently, and the first one or two months in a new country feel totally surreal. Travelling is about new experiences, and getting wrecked on unidentified white powder and taking home five different girls a week is part of that.

I think one could certainly make a game for this competition that featured levels of violence that would get it banned in Germany, and it would qualify for entry due to being unsuitable for minors.

Right and people wonder WHY teenage kids like Natalee Holloway have an extremely high risk of “disappearing”.

From what I’ve seen in Spain, I am pretty sure she overdoses on drugs. I am biased for sure, but I doubt anything different could have happened.

I’ve met many foreign students in a quite a few countries and contexts and I speak from experience when I say Americans were without exception the worst.

Now, that’s not a bad thing if you’re horny, virgin and looking to get laid, but really don’t ever start about morality there. :P

There’s nothing worse than disregarding all boundaries simply because you were used to an iron fortress of rules around you. It’s a. stupidly naive and b. quite ironically the worst thing that comes from censorship & rules in the first place.

If going abroad means breaking all rules you’ve ever had to life with, I honestly feel sorry for you.

Yes, but remember that we are talking about Virtual violence. Why the hell would violence OR sex be bad at all if it’s virtual and unreal ??

I think the exact same applies to violence. As long as we’re not talking about snuff movies and as long as people aren’t becoming violent from watching violent movies… there’s really no good argument to ban it altogether.

Whereas guns kill people every freaking day. It’s so damn naive.

Anyways, it really doesn’t make as much sense as you seem to think it does. :p
