So, sometimes I say I’m going to post something, then totally neglect to. Over the next week or so I’d like to finally clear out my backlog. (But maybe I shouldn’t say that!) This may be deja vu for many of you, but hopefully at least a few folks will see something new. Either way, it’ll help me sleep at night.

Froggle is 3D platformer made by Team Hardcode, a group of DigiPen students, where you play a little frog (well, something like a frog, anyway) who uses his tongue to grapple and swing around stylized, cartoony environments on a quest to renew his Froggle License. Think Wind Waker meets Bionic Commando, but with WASD shooter-style controls. Wait, I’m making this sound more confusing than it is. Just give it a try, eh?

Download Froggle here.
(Note: The depth of field effect breaks the visuals on my machine, so it might on yours too?)

Is that “renew his Froggle license” a reference to Hasbro releasing awful Frogger games to make use of their license to the title? I’m guessing it’s not.

Requires Pixel Shader 3.0, Lmao I’m not sure if my Graphics card even has something like a Pixel Shader… Damn I went from “normal” Pc games to Indie Games because my Pc is so old. If I now need an up-to-date Pc to play Indie Games, what will I play next? Maybe Board Games…

  • sqrrl

looks like a buttload of fun; dling on my gaming pc

The video is perfect. Good pacing, great music.. it makes me want to throw money at these guys. Seriously, whoever created the video, kudos to you.

Also, I’m glad they went ahead with Shader 3.0. Come on guys, you can get a good current gen card for like $50. Indie games are getting prettier which is a Good Thing.

“Indie” doesn’t mean they have to trail at least 5 years behind on their game engines ;)

  • d2king10

I actually thought the trailer was way too slow. should have cut out all of the fluff and just shown the footage towards the end.

  • guy

this game sucks, I hated it

  • Skofo

Probably the most unpolished game I’ve ever played.

But I do like grappling games. And I love the music.

  • wtowns

This game is vastly under-appreciated. Definitely give it a try.

  • rmeyer

Once you get past the learning curve it’s a blast.

  • JW

    opposing force had good multiplayer

  • crukid

loving the music on this video

  • Cthulhu32

I really like the Jumping Jack Flash feel of the game, plus the cel shading and comedy is neat. If only all student games were this high quality :)

  • Tom Sennett

This game is further proof that grappling hooks are the greatest gameplay mechanic ever.

  • RoguPlaf

I’m surprised I didn’t see this at IGF!

  • Eclipse

not bad for a digipen game

  • sinoth

Well, upon beating the game, I have to say: if you are banking on ONE gameplay mechanic, at least get that right. The physics just doesn’t ‘click’. I think if the tongue behaved like a rope instead of a steel bar it would be more enjoyable. Still, a charming game with great music :)

  • judgespear

It should behave like an elastic band like Umihara Kawase, the best grappling hook game ever. I wish more games had grappling hook physics like that game did.

  • garsh

That game wants me to play it on Wii, and my Wii wants me to play that game on it.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Garsh, you should check this out:

  • Hansondr

The music is Dictaphone’s Lament by Tycho (

When I briefly played Spider-Man 2 on the Xbox, I thought of how awesome it’d be if you shot your web line in an arbitrary direction. This fulfils that sick fantasy.

It’s got some issues, most notably a total jib-out camera in close quarters, and a range indicator that fails to account for velocity and is therefore *completely* useless (despite being necessary). Still had alot of fun with it. Hope these guys get picked up like the Narbacular Drop team was, so they can make something grand of this concept.

  • UltimateWalrus

WTF, why are they not teaching me this shit at USC?

Anyway, this is a great game. It’s got a sweet visual style and the gameplay is cool. I actually really like the “Froggle” IP, which is sad, because the Nazis at Digipen own all the rights now.
