Edmund

The results of the Adult/Educational Competition are in (and have been for a while now, sorry about that)! This was a super-close race between Edmund and Back Door Man, with the former winning by two votes. Congratulations to Farmergnome for winning the grand prize with his controversial game.

The top ten entries were:

1. Edmund – 72 (17.7%)

2. Back Door Man – 70 (17.2%)
3. I HAVE CANDY GET IN THE VAN – 47 (11.5%)
4. Super Cock Blockers – 44 (10.8%)
5. Jirosum – 33 (8.1%)

6. Mr. Jones’ Dream – 26 (6.4%)
7. I Love You 2 – 22 (5.4%)
8. Dildo Tank the First Squirt – 13 (3.2%)
9. Manfred Mansfield and the Invasion of the Alien Men – 12 (2.9%)
10. Sheets – 11 (2.7%)

You can find the full breakdown here. Once again, please be aware that some of these games depict graphic pixel-on-pixel intercourse and are possibly inappropriate for young children, depending on how tight-assed their parents are. Make note of what category the game belongs to before you play.

Does anyone love stats? Here are some: of the top 10 games, 8 were of adult nature, 1 was educational, and 1 was both. Proving once again that people enjoy sex more than they enjoy learning. But everyone loves video games.

Thanks to all the participants! This was a crazy one, and the next one might be crazier. See you next time!

yessir! edmund is definitly a controversial game…it definitly deserves to be up at top.

i had some technical issues with super cok blockers however.

though it it looked pretty good with the gang garrison engine…-sad face-

    Pixel-Gonnorea..

  • Q

    fucking vietnam, I allways die

  • O

I haven’t played any of these but they are great.

  • Q

it was my keyboards fault :)
the keys suck und stuck every now and than…

  • Dinsdale

I am happy with the results. Edmund and IHCGITV were my favorites from the start although I enjoyed them all.
Glad to see Malesevic made it to the top 10.

  • Bleagle

Hmm, I liked Back Door Man the most. But I didnt vote so I cant complain about the 2nd place : ) Edmund is ok..

  • Cesque

I’m just whining as usual, but aside from its controversial nature and some artsy elements, Edmund was pretty meh. There was no gameplay whatsoever, artificial play time extension (jump jump jump shoot door jump), rough story, and a “wait, that’s it?” ending.

Then again, if creepiness was the criterium, it should definitely win. The first time I played I quit back to the car, the second time I had to remove my earphones.

  • CMspice

disappointed that more people didn’t realize dildo tank was by far the best game.

Also I Love You 2 really deserves more credit.

But congrats to everyone who won. Those were all great games.

  • Edmund

    I WIN!

  • judgespear

Dildo Tank was hurt by the fact that the download link was down for most of the voting period. Otherwise, it would probably have had more exposure.

  • judgespear

    Hmm, and it’s still down.

Goddamn, I swear I would have voted for the game if I could only download it.

Someone want to post a mirror? Yeah, it’s too late and voting is over but I still want to play it.

  • Thanks

Edmund! Finally a game with an interesting subject! I would’ve made a game like this long ago if I knew how to program. Been playing this over and over all day :3

Take that bitch! Priceless! If only you could do that in real life, LOL! >:D

  • Allen

Dildo Tank was fun but it was adult for the sake of being adult, I thought.

Edmund, Back Door Man, Candy Van were all great

I really liked Super Cock Blockers though.

  • Melly

Cheers to JiroSum. Also, Back Door Man was fantastic.

  • j

Look also to superhero comics for examples of writers who believed that injecting the rape and murder of women into their stories was an easy way to turn something designed for children into credible fiction for adults. Video games are potentially destined to share that cultural ghetto, especially if this is what we choose to promote.

  • right

    here we go again

  • re: j

The Boys mention that I think.

  • j

The promotion of a game like Edmund is symptomatic of the dearth of basic standards in games criticism. If we’re going anywhere, we need creators and an audience who are willing to discuss games in terms of specific mechanics and aesthetics, overall strategies for their application, and specific effects produced. “Farmergnome” himself says his objective was to make a game that “creates an emotional response.” This is how the game is being discussed and defended in its forum thread; vague terms like “emotion” and “atmosphere” that don’t say anything. It’s talking in binaries. Is game atmospheric? (YES/NO) Is game art? (YES/NO) Get ten people trading these answers at once and you have a simulated conversation. Edmund asks the question: “Do you feel anything when you watch a woman being raped? (YES/NO)” If you answered YES then, by its creator’s criteria, Edmund was a success. Is that an experiment? Is it meant to be a surprise that a rape scene in a videogame reads similarly to a rape scene in a film, or a comic, or any other medium? Apparently, it is. Edmund presents rape as “shocking” entertainment and, while doing so, codifies (in the laws of how its little game world can operate) the portrayal of women as inherently frail and helpless targets for sexual assault. The game is obsessed with masculinity, defining rape and violence as the keys to masculine power. The conflict is between men. Women are props. That’s what you can take away from “Edmund.”

The only other thing to note about the game is the aesthetic confusion in putting film grain and scratches over 8-bit Cave Story graphics. Presumably, we’re meant to take the game even more seriously because it’s trying to remind us of film, which has mainstream credibility, instead of games, which don’t.

  • Farmergnome

    ““Farmergnome” himself”

    You can call me Paul.

“Edmund presents rape as “shocking” entertainment and, while doing so, codifies (in the laws of how its little game world can operate) the portrayal of women as inherently frail and helpless targets for sexual assault.”

Ofcorse it was made to stur a emotional response, I would be worried if it didn’t, and hopefully Ive succeeded in exactly that judging by the response, Ive said many times the exact emotion was sturing some sort of disgust in the player initially.

“The conflict is between men. Women are props. That’s what you can take away from “Edmund.””

Thats spot on, while the game contains elements of rape, it isn’t the focus, the focus is the character of the rapist and the two personalties in the game that make up the rapist character.

“Edmund presents rape as “shocking” entertainment and, while doing so, codifies (in the laws of how its little game world can operate) the portrayal of women as inherently frail and helpless targets for sexual assault.”

The game isn’t about the women displayed in the game, but the rapist. If the focus was on the victim it would be a different story.

“The conflict is between men. Women are props. That’s what you can take away from “Edmund.””

Well the conflict is between is in the rapist’s mind, Michael and Edmund are just different faces of the same person.

  • Anthony Flack

Look, these are just the results of a poll. It’s nobody’s statement, it’s just statistics.

So, lots of people voted for Edmund. Hardly surprising with all the attention it received. But this has got nothing to do with games criticism, or the games that writers might choose to promote.

Personally, none of my votes made the top three, but I’m not going get upset about it. These compos are just for fun, right?

  • Bobby Smiles

    Define fun.

    Is rape fun?

  • Allen

    @Bobby Smiles

Most people will say no; rape is not fun.

Others will say yes, rape is fun.

I don’t think playing a rape gun is fun, but playing a game about a rapist is fun. As in, I enjoyed it. Not in any black and white way of course.

  • judgespear

This is fine and all, but could someone please put a mirror up for Dildo Tank, or even all the compo entries in general?

I’m sure Dildo Tank would have been pretty awesome, if I could only download it. I would have even voted for it.

  • Allen
  • Slather

@judgespear: you’re hilarious- “This is fine but I WANT TO PLAY DILDO TANK!”

Congrats Paul! You did a great job creating a unique experience that tugs at us emotionally. You even threw in a Fight-Club dilemma, bravo. You deserve all the TIG cred that winning provides.

“Define fun” is a stupid statement.
For everyone that can’t handle the pixelated representation of rape, (and therefore the very idea of rape), you are too sensitive to be posting your feelings online.

  • Nicholas Lee

    hey j,

Try to use more white space. It would make reading your pretentious dribble easier. Thanks.

  • judgespear

Well, what do you expect? Are you really going to argue about Edmund in the comments section? I mean, people have already done that to death already by now. At least do it in the forums, rather than here where it’s completely off topic. This is about compo results, not Edmund being controversial.

  • j

Hey Nicholas, I’m sorry my comments about the rape game hurt your feelings.

I did not realize how deeply your emotions had been stured.

  • j

You will have a hard time arguing that this isn’t about Edmund being controversial when Yu’s post refers to Edmund as a “controversial game.”

Edmund hasn’t been on the front page of IndieGames.com all day, to that site’s credit. I’d suggest stronger guidelines on the competitions in the future if the voting can produce results this embarrassing.

  • judgespear

If it wasn’t controversial, there would be no point in people arguing about it to death would there? It’s pretty much beating a dead horse at this point.

And no, this is about the compo results, simple as that. Not about Edmund or rape, etc.

  • Farmergnome

I’m going out to get maggoted for the night so this will be my last, ive got a few emails from peeps like you now so im getting the hang of this.

“The promotion of a game like Edmund is symptomatic of the dearth of basic standards in games criticism. If we’re going anywhere, we need creators and an audience who are willing to discuss games in terms of specific mechanics and aesthetics, overall strategies for their application, and specific effects produced.”

Well im here, as I have been since day one of every competition game from when I start, posting updates in the forums as I do them, as do most developers, question is, where were you? Why didn’t you comment? Why didn’t you say something or bring up a discussion? Why didn’t you… “discuss games in terms of specific mechanics and aesthetics, overall strategies for their application, and specific effects produced”. It sounds all great and rosey when your slinging all this long winded talk around, but when it boils down to it, few people give a shit (commented, said they liked/disliked) until its too late, and thats why you come across as pretentious.

    “comments about the rape game”

Its a game about a rapist, not a game about rape, im sure you can figure out the difference.

“I’d suggest stronger guidelines on the competitions in the future if the voting can produce results this embarrassing. ”

Again, slinging insults and preaching is not the answer, but with your extended vocab you should know that.

The competition is for fun, Im pretty sure most of the people are in it to have a good time and to learn how to make better games, explore new boundaries, if you don’t like what people vote for then enter your own game, im sure it will be great.

“You will have a hard time arguing that this isn’t about Edmund being controversial”

Ahh, no its about the competition results, thats why the title reads ”
Adult/Educational Compo: Results!”, its amazing what eyesight can do. Take it to the forum if you want to discuss individual games, champ.

  • j

If this site exists in service to its forum culture now, and its forum culture is going to rally behind something like “Edmund,” then the reasons I started visiting here some three years ago have evaporated.

You can expect to lose readers if this is what you choose to post.

  • judgespear

You’re the only one complaining. I honestly don’t care if you stop reading this website. Please, go away. It’s probably for your own good.

  • geist

And nothing of value was lost.

  • rumrusher

edmund pretty much was the seal clubbing game of this compo the man sell point was not the rape but the emotions gnome try to get from players some* hated it some understood it. one thought it need more teleporting yellow mutant cab jacking starring Sean Connery as the tick off vet who been rip off. but some where in the development process the small case of subtle in-jokes in the game was removed.

    *17 pages of the stuff.

  • rumrusher

back door man was close wasn’t it and edmund has the a similar ending.

  • judgespear

Can we discuss the compo entries now?

I swear, someone could be taking about baking cookies and if the word Edmund happened to pop up during the conversation all hell would break loose.

Enough of this. We get it, it’s a game that some find offensive or loathsome. Now, how about those other entries? I mean, in terms of what you thought would win or something actually relevant to the compo (rather than specific games themselves)?

  • judgespear

Also, why Edmund won is obvious. It obviously stirs up a lot of emotion or even outrage in people. It’s a game that generates a lot of conversation, both good and bad. Just look at the posts j just made.

How about the other entries, and the position they scored on the top 10?

  • Foppy

“Let’s not discuss the games. Let’s instead discuss the games. P.S. My opinion on the games is correct and the other guy is wrong.”

  • ErdTirdMans

    Aquin for prez.

  • rumrusher

    isn’t edmund a compo entry?

and I thought it won because of the promise of a level editor and the dialog can be mess around in notepad if one go into the script folder? that small bit of info can turn a noir story of a rapist to just about anything the player can think of(but I can’t seem to find out how to mess with the animations with out breaking the dialog).

  • rumrusher

on another note did any one get the in the pants of the 21 question lady in backdoor man so far I keep getting chump change?

  • Muz

ram, slect the bottom answer for everything :).

  • cactus

The only reason I think Edmund deserves to win is that it was the only game where the screenshots/video made me download and play the game. That I did not enjoy it doesn’t really matter.

I think j should stick around, I’m sure there are people here who feel the same way as him (I do to a certain extent), but I don’t feel like expressing my views since it won’t result in anything but possibly people getting angry at me for doing so.

  • Hyudra

Honestly? I found IHCGITV (Candyvan) inspired more emotional response from me than Edmund did. It’s also the game I talked most with friends about after playing some of the entries.

All in all, I agree with the top 2 winners – Edmund was, if not the most emotional (for me anyways) game, the game that came across as most polished and artistically sound.

Candyvan really pushes the envelope and goes a step further to show you the consequences of your actions (both in harder gameplay for being evil and the endings), which is something I’m interested in seeing – I was lobbying for the Jay is Games compo to focus on Consequences, a few weeks back.

  • O

People who tell other people not to make games are cunts. Games are great. Make games. Make every game.

  • Miroslav

    Let’s talk about incest now.

  • Bobby Smiles

Slather, you’re a class act. Do you belittle rape victims in your day to day life to?

The comments defending this game are some sick shit.

  • Anthony Flack
