Gamma IV and Giant Robot

A couple of really cool organizations could use some help:

1. Gamma IV – The fourth iteration of the popular experimental game showcase/dance party, is headed to GDC this year (with over 150 submitted games!). Kokoromi, the show’s organizers, have started a Kickstarter project to help pay for the new venue and hardware for the event. All proceeds will go toward the event and backers can receive a number of sweet goodies donated by other indies (games, GDC passes, soundtracks, comics, etc.).

2. Giant Robot – This might seem slightly out of place, as Giant Robot is an indie Asian pop culture magazine and not an indie game magazine, but GR has hosted a number of fantastic game galleries, and is helping realize LA Game Space, a non-profit “game lab” that seeks to involve children in Los Angeles with game-making and game-makers. The magazine’s creators, Eric and Martin, are asking for donations to help offset the rising cost of print. Again, there is the possibility of getting some great donation gifts if you help out.

Even if you’re not interested in donating, you should check out what these guys are up to and see if it interests you!

I know for some of you these events seem far away and irrelevant. Keep in mind that these types of posts make up a very small fraction of the content on TIGSource and please be civil in the comments even if you are uninterested.

    Is the title ironic?

  • Derek

I doubt it – my fascination with writing ironically ended a long time ago.

*haiti literally crumbles into shit and hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives* Donate to some good causes people, Phil Fish needs a new iPhone and some magazine about shit nobody cares about is unable to correctly make any consumer model that has worked for the past few hundred years work for them.

  • Derek

LOL Super Joe the humanitarian. You must be writing from a cratered tent city and not your dorm room.

It’s possible to care about both Haiti and video games, you know. Use your imagination.

super joe has a point, but, i think this donation drive is mainly targeted towards people who have benefited from the gamma thing (either enjoyed its games or participated) rather than general altruistic onlookers

  • Derek

Donation drives are targeted toward whomever is interested. I think Gamma, GR, ArtXGame, and LA Game Space are all really fantastic, creative things to support that benefit a lot of people. You also have the opportunity to get some cool gifts in return.

Or you could read the post, not donate, and just enjoy learning about new things.

Or you could feel guilty over what to donate to. Guilt – I don’t recommend it.

This always comes up with causes people perceive to be unimportant with everything else that goes on in the world. If the world focused on the most dire crisis at the time (which I’d argue is not Haiti, world hunger due to national debt and corrupt govts is a much bigger problem) then nothing would ever get done. Besides, theres nothing stopping anyone from donating to more pressing causes AND something they’re interested in personally. I’ve donated to both Haiti and GAMMA and feel no guilt whatsoever.

Super Joe, what are you doing surfing the internet and checking TIGSource, of all places, WHEN THERE’S SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE! GO!
