Ludum Dare 17 wrapped up recently. The theme of the 48-hour competition was “Islands”, and there were 204 entries total! Retro Affect‘s Kyle Pulver won best overall with Gaiadi. In the game you have to build islands and fight off swarms of enemies while you try and complete your goal of planting 3 “seeds”. The timelapse of Gaiadi’s development is shown above.

You can see all of the top 20 games here. Some really impressive work for 48 hours.

Ludum Dare makes me happy inside. Getting 16th place overall certainly helps with that, but more importantly it's great to be a part of such a big (virtual) gathering of like-minded people who like to make stuff.

I barely played through 30% of the games, but I came across quite a few awesome ones in there. Congratulations to everyone who entered! Just completing a fully functional game in 48hours is a feat itself. :)

Sorry to be “that guy”, but Mr. Pulver violated a rule of the contest by not providing source code, so I wouldn't consider him having won. We should rather give props to Almost (who scored second-highest overall.) :)

What fydo said (except I got 27th, overall). Ludum Dare is great, and I'm looking forward to the next one, as usual.

Lots of great stuff in there guys, nice work to everyone who entered! Finishing a full game in such a short timeframe is quite an accomplishment in and of itself ^_^

I love the fortress game, I can't remember the name of it, it is hyper fun though.

I had fun too. It was really gratifying to score highly in the innovation category.
