His Dark Majesty

By: Derek Yu

What do you do when you’re programming AI for a turn-based strategy game but modern computers aren’t challenging you enough? Put it on the 8-bit Atari! And that’s what Jakub Debski did when he created His Dark Majesty, which is free to download and is playable via a number of 8-bit Atari emulators, like Atari800Win. Links to the emulators are available from the game’s homepage, along with an interesting account of the game’s development (including screenshots). It’s a beautiful piece of work. (TIGForums thread)

instead of catching up on old news from ages ago, why not start finding new news to write about. old news isn't news. it's olds.

  • lolcat

this blog is dying faster than an aborted fetus

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind.

  • Sir Alphonse

Good job Mr. Internet. You win at The Internet.
The grand prize is that you're a dick.

  • Flecko

I for one, had never heard of this game. And I freaking love it. I'm gonna try to dust of my 800 and put this on a floppy to try it on the real hardware. Makes you forget how important the fundamentals are.

  • Rockidr4

Maybe some of us are just finding out about this stuff. Maybe it's news to us. Maybe TIGsource is where we come for information, not news. Maybe I am really interested in the game that this post is about. Maybe I would not have heard about this game otherwise. If we tell people about the things we find out about, the indie game scene will expand as more people know about it. Would you not recommend cave story to a friend just because it is old? I like posts like this.

  • mrpodunkian

if you've got an RSS feed reader of any kind, subscribe to http://www.indiegames.com/blog/'s feed — not only does it give a more comprehensive overview of the latest releases from the indie games community at large, it also does a great job of giving a great and concise summary of the latest news (when it's new), every week, in what's called the “indie game links”.

i am not saying this just to be facetious, but consider the fact that news of this game was posted on the fifth of may (a week ago) on indiegames.com. having more than one source of indie news can't be a bad thing.

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

Stop obsessing about me and leaving passive-aggressive comments on TIGSource. I'm serious, you need to move on already.

  • Kneecaps

I too had not heard of this, and I am extremely impressed.

  • falsion

I got an idea. You should just ban him. He obviously isn't going to move on any time soon, so why not do something to help him keep his mind off of this site for a while?

  • nobody

Poor guy. Derek really hurt his feelings comparing his game to Cave Story. He'll never get over it.

  • rmiller

ignore podunkian. he won't be satisfied until every post is a glowing review about something he made. in fact, he once had not one but two websites that were exactly that.

and yes your game is still a cave story ripoff. cry harder about it. nobody cares.

  • bradf

This is a good game! But! It is too difficult for me. I have trouble completing it.
I wish more people did games for classic systems.

  • Pita

This game is wonderful. While 'retro' is so prevalent amongst indie games, they rarely go as far as using the hardware itself, which seems like the natural conclusion of the trend. There is something really satisfying about fabricating a little piece of history like this.

  • mrpodunkian

    A) i haven't been writing comments on tigsource.
    B) they haven't been passive aggressive, they've been hyper-aggressive. stop writing a shitty blog. that solves all of the problems for both of us!

as for everyone else, take my suggestions to heart — put other indie games blogs on your RSS feeds, because it's very important to have more than one perspective on things. especially if the perspective of things that you receive is kinda delayed, by a week. or more.

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

If it was such a shitty blog you wouldn't be reading it, posting on it, trying so hard to get other people not to read it, creating websites/music videos about it, etc.

  • mrpodunkian

funny, i didn't realize you read my shitty opinion, or you would not know about my stupid websites/music videos. but cool, i understand that this internet is such that you only read what you want to read. i understand that's how you run your site.

  • mrpodunkian

bro, all i'm suggesting is for people is that they keep their minds open to other sites. i'm really sorry if it goes against your indie games agenda, but if you read my last post the only thing i really said was “this was posted earlier on another site; another writer does a much thorough job of posting more comprehensive news; you should always keep an open mind. maybe you're against keeping an open mind? put a hyperlink block on your site. problem solved.

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

Like I said, you're passive-aggressive. You won't even admit that what you said was a backhanded insult. You're like a jealous housewife.

  • Kinten

    MrPodunkian!
You are certainly entitled to have an opinion as much as anyone else and you give great advice (even though to most of us here indiegames.com is not a revolutionary find).
Allow me to reciprocate your advice!

If you don't like a certain blog, simple stop subscribing to it.
Trying to change it in a way that's more akin to picking a fight then giving constructive feedback is futile (and may I say a bit naive and/or infantile) and will only end up in you getting burnt. Great success if that's what you're after
(one can not help but to begin to wonder).

Also, as many have already eloquently pointed out, this is not a news-service (nor is indiegames.com) – rendering your argument invalid. But I guess you already figured that out.

Then again, I virtually feed on indie-drama, so please, do go on!
I'm not being ironic. I'm just a humble admirer of your determination and bullheadedness.
    /Kinten

  • Adam Coate

Just to let you know, Derek Yu doesn't take criticism very well :-.

  • mrpodunkian

my mistake for practicing common courtesy then:

your site does a really terrible job of reporting independent games news.

people here have commented that they had not heard of the game being referred to in this post, and that's nobody's fault but your own (considering INDIEGAMES.COM had posted about it a week earlier). on the flip side, timw's readers were quick to point out that STREEMERZ (my latest game, written about two days ago) was a part of the ACTION 52 OWNS event — a fairly large event that involved a lot of prominent indie game developers, that originated from your own site's community (that you somehow failed to mention). maybe this shows an irregularity in posting habits.

you can continue to pretend like i'm being passive aggressive, but that's not the case. i've been hyper-agressive, like i've said, to the point that people think i'm obsessive about my criticism of you and how you run your site. i've made a site directly parodying yours (and to my surprise, it was successful to a very large degree). i've made plenty of parody songs about you/your colleagues/your treatment of the indie games community. my songs found a large market despite your unwillingness to report about them. but ou can keep pretending like i'm sort of jilted, obsessed fan who wants your attention, despite the fact that i've been so un-passive-aggressive of my criticism of you that it's sort of a thing on your own wiki (were you aware it existed?).

  • mrpodunkian

“as many have eloquently pointed out, this is not a news-service”

    nice argument. here's a one line counter-argument:

  • Anonymous

We all know how this is going to end. So can the two of you just hurry up and go on a date, already?

  • Jason_Bakker

    Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis!

    What?

  • Kinten

    I got served.
Or as my drama-loving alter ego Pedro would say: “FUCK YES! Tell me I'm a dirty little bitch!”

Seriously though, I still don't view this as a news service as in daily news. More like indie-weekly – sometimes fresh stuff, mostly just posts of mutual interest. And in this particular case you have to agree that your initial comment – “old news from ages ago” is a bit over the top.
My recommendation still stands. Just stop subscribing.
If you still want things to change I suggest you ask that that one sentence “indie news” be removed.
Your urgent problem solved and you can continue reading this blog without the constant need of analyzing the contents freshness and then sharing your sharpminded, much needed conclusions.

Any who, I suggest we continue this in the forums where it belongs.
To Derek: I'm sorry for keeping this silly conversation alive.

  • mrpodunkian

keep referencing memes. maybe you'll have something intelligent and original to say.

your claim for indie-weekly-news falls apart immediately from my original post talking about indiegames.com's “weekly indie links” features. your claim that “old news from ages ago” being a bit over the top falls apart when news of finck first aired on the 25th of april, almost half a month ago. good on derek for getting his site back up, but really? terry's TIGJAM UK is somehow more pressing than a game from one of atmospheric indie games' forefathers? and only after that was herocore mentioned?

people yap on and on about facebook changing its habits to appeal to marketers, but nobody questions once derek's agenda to self promote and propogate his own indie brand.

  • mrpodunkian

a fine contribution to a reasonable discussion

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

You desperately want me to post about your games and acknowledge your existence, but I don't, so you spend your life parodying me and my work and popping up on my website to insult me. You're basically Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction, okay?

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

“Unlike master morality which is sentiment, slave morality is literally re-sentiment–revaluing that which the master values. This strays from the valuation of actions based on consequences to the valuation of actions based on “intention”.[5] As master morality originates in the strong, slave morality originates in the weak. Because slave morality is a reaction to oppression, it villainizes its oppressors. Slave morality is the inverse of master morality.”

  • http://www.derekyu.com Derek Yu

You posted like 100 comments under an interview with me about how Spelunky sucks (before you even played it) and the only thing I did was ignore your friend request on Facebook. I think I did alright.

  • Kinten

Judging from your answer I apparently stepped on your toes and I apologize for that. I admit I wrote in a way that might be interpreted as ironic, but my intentions were honest.
You're fighting windmills here, focus your energy on something else.
I mean we're talking games here and trying to enjoy each other's company.
I know that sometimes we're a bit biased and brown nosed, but I sincerely feel we're allowed to be. Our opinions might differ there, but come on. ITS GAMES.

I truly mean it when I say your passion is admirable, but try to focus it on something more important in life.

  • ortoslon

yeah, http://indiegames.com/blog is better, i read tigsource blog mostly for fun comment threads like this one. (but i'm also subscribed to the feedback board on forums for gams)

  • joehonkie

Holy christ, that's a lot of wasted comment space. First I heard about this, thanks!

  • MisterX

Wew, that new comment tree structure already proves useful!

This game looks very nice, but does the gameplay offer anything new if you've played Fire Emblem before?

  • Anonymous

seriously, though. You're obviously in love with him. Stop sublimating it into hate. Ask him out, he'll probably say yes.

  • Anonymous

I mean, come on. Your latest game is basically a love letter to Derek. You even drew him in his underpants! Are you the only one who can't see this, or are you just too ashamed to admit it?

  • Someone

Mr Podunkian does have a point, why hasn't TIGSource reported on the Action 52 OWNS compo? I think it's a great idea, and I'm sure it'd benefit from the added traffic.

Can you please answer this, Derek Yu?

    Cheers.

  • fydo

Haha, I love reading indie drama, especially when it is squished into deeply nested 140px wide columns. :)

I don't read indiegames.com, and I think this game looks pretty cool. It's one thing to emulate the look of a console game, but to make a game ROM that will actually run on the console? Pretty awesome.

  • Anon

Wow, these boxes are getting small.

  • Figger

I don't know – I have found games that were as old as dirt at this site. And I still found them interesting. Doesn't matter to me, as long as it gives me a new perspective. But hey, what do I know? I am unoriginal enough to be happy to see the Knight Lore remake is out after such a long time. :) http://retrospec.sgn.net/game.php?link=kl

Related to the HDM game described above, it sure looks cool.

  • http://moonloop.vg Eclipse

Podunkian, how about stop being a dick for once? Open your own indie games community, write news, or just follow another one, I'm kinda sick of reading your bullshit on the comment section when it should be used to comment the game itself. Have you played it or are you here just to say how old the news people post are?

  • Melly

I think we need to somehow limit that comment tree thing to only show a couple of children before asking to open another page to keep following the comment in a wider screen, cause the way it is it doesn't work very well. :S

  • Sir Alphonse

I was thinking the same thing.

  • Adam Coate

Your work does a good enough job of parodying itself.

  • Adam Coate

Well, Spelunky does suck (and yes, I've played it). You're going to punish me for pointing out the truth?

  • Anonymous

Not being friended by someone whose work you dislike is a punishment? You need to get out more, dude.

  • http://squareduck.blogspot.com StephenM3

I read and follow other indie news websites. I'm sure most people here do as well. Telling us about indiegames.com/blog isn't nearly necessary, especially because it's already linked in the sidebar of this very website.

I've never understood how some people can spend so much time and attention on something they loathe. If you don't like TIGsource, and think it's a shitty blog, then don't read it.

Are you being merely altruistic, trying to save us all from the mindless ignorance of sycophancy? Or are you just plain sick of seeing this blog treated like the only source of indie news? No need to worry, I assure you: Almost every person who reads this blog also follows indie-game news elsewhere. The people who are really interested, follow lots of gaming blogs. The people who only read this blog aren't really all that interested in “indie games”, and so you shouldn't worry too much about them.

For once, without feeling the need to defend yourself from an insult or clarify “what you meant” in an earlier comment, just consider (and tell us) what you're possibly accomplishing by prowling this blog's comment section being vitriolic. (If what I just said is a misrepresentation of what you're doing, then what are you doing?

  • Zgred

Did the Underside ever come out, or did Derek effectively kill it with his scorn?

  • falsion

I think Podunkian just killed it with his bitching.
