Bronzemurder

Bronzemurder Shoot, I meant to post this when I first saw it, but TIGSource was down at the time. In case you missed it, I present to you the story of Bronzemurder (as told by nomad). Reason #30,746 why Dwarf Fortress is king.

Oh, and while we’re at it, here’s another reason: a screenshot of a DF map in Stonesense, a third-party visualizer for the game. The screenshot was taken by Petr Ga, via the Dwarf Fortress forums.

    Pixel Junk Shooter Rip-Off!

    :-P

  • rinkuhero

you forgot the guy who made a working computer in dwarf fortress

  • Xion

This is radness. I love reading DF stories even if I can't bring myself unto the game, but I'd love to see more stuff like this – visualizations of events 'n shiz.

  • Snafu

It's interesting how appealing DF stories are, and how impenetrable the game is. (That's not unique to DF; it's somewhat true of other games like the Sims as well.) With a real interface and a front-end like Stonesense, it might be more fun, but even then I suspect the endless hours that go into laying out a Bronzemurdered citadel wouldn't be worth the five minutes of the cool story that followed.

  • FourbitFriday

I dunno man, it's a pretty damn cool story. And with as many of these awesome types of DF stories as there are around I can't imagine that such tales are too much of a rarity to make the game 'not worth it.'

And anyway it's probably a really fun game, too.

  • The Cheshire Cat

That's not really the case; the way it works is that the people who write the stories enjoy the game enough to actually be engaged to the level where they want to tell other people what happened. If you're playing Dwarf Fortress by going in and saying “I'm going to make a story out of this”, you're not going to find it very enjoyable, because you'll spend all your time trying to make interesting stuff happen.

It works much better if you just try to play the game with the intention of making a good fort, and letting interesting things occur organically as you run into various obstacles preventing you from achieving that goal. I mean, look at the genesis of the Bronzemurder story – he didn't go out looking for a horrible creature to come wreck his fort, he went looking for water to bring to the surface, and had a horrible creature show up to impede his progress somewhat.

  • madk

Dang you, I had actually kicked the addiction until now. CURSE YOU, DEREK!!!! You brought it back to liiiife

    :P

  • Opotio

Does the Dwarf Therapist GUI (http://code.google.com/p/dwarftherapist/) can replace the whole Dwarf text interface ?
Because with this and Stonesense I could potentially playing it again.

I have some difficulties to use the keyboard particularly in that game.

  • madk

I just need to use a decent tileset and I'm good to go.

  • Eagle0600

Not a necessity, but yeah, a tile-set helps. I personally prefer a clean, glyph-style tile-set (one that doesn't try anything too fancy) with a graphics pack.

  • PHeMoX

And I thought the Phoebe tile set made this game amazing.. that isometric visualizer looks even better.

Goes to show how much data gets generated and can be used to generate some nicer graphics. I really think Dwarf Fortress should drop it's ASCII graphics and make it more accessible to the more mainstream crowd that would love this game. It's incredibly deep.

  • zeekthegeek

That is something far into the future, the game is in an Alpha state currently and has a lot more features to implement before it's finished enough to even think about UI

  • guest

If people have been playing the game from start to finish for years, can you really call it alpha?

  • Laremere

By definition it is an alpha because it does not have all the features it plans to have for the game to be considered “complete.” Though it may be years old it still is in rapid development and keeps changing dramatically.

  • joehonkie

I'll take “The Rapists” for 200.

  • mistersix

i enjoy dwarf fortress and that illustrated battle report but god damn i cant stand those retarded s-t ligatures he uses in the graphic's text

  • Hidden

Anyone else just getting an error when trying to view the story?

  • Rambopvp

The epic tale of Bronzemurder has convinced me to download and play dwarf fortress after many months of sitting on the edge.

    No regrets!
