A Game By Its Cover: Voting

Voting for the best AGBIC Compo game has begun. You can see screenshots and individual downloads of all the games made for the contest here, you can vote here, and you can get a torrent of all the games in one package here. I haven’t tried them all out yet, so I can’t make any specific recommendations of which of the 67 entries to play. Sadly, Star Cats IV is not among the finished entries, but I thought it was a great image to use with this post.

I really can't vote. Tried 6 games already and they are all, well, quite frankly brilliant.

  • orlandofurioso

Download link for Cat Poke is dead.

  • TIGSMelly

The link to Cat Poke was fixed. Let me know of anymore problems.

  • Tstttttt

    so where are the covers?
they should be right nixt to the games, not in the threads. Only hat way you could judge the link between both, too.

Hi, I'm the designer who made the Famicase cover for Star Cats IV. It's a shame that Star Cats game could't be finished for the contest. Anyway, if anybody wants to do the game I'll be pleased to help with designs or whatever.
    My contact: info(at)daruma(dot)cat
By the way, I found this web via Tiny Cartridge blog. Great contest!

Funny, I just tried six of them myself, and I thought they were terrible.
Not to say there isn't anything good in this compo.

  • TIGSMelly

It would clutter the page disnecessarily, I feel. I preferred to keep it clean. Plus, the game developers were not terribly tied to each cover and were encouraged to be creative, so don't be afraid to base your vote more on whether a game is actually good instead of how well it translates the cart, if you want.

Besides, if you're going to vote you need a forum account anyway, and looking into the threads gives you the chance to leave some feedback for the developers.

  • TIGSMelly

Don't give up, you have 7 votes to spread. :D

Try Guitarguy. It is cruel but fair. Cat Poke is also absurdly cute.

Ha, you may end up with more than one game. No promises, but I just started slamming out something for it this evening after noting it's conspicuous lack of a showing.

More than one? that would be awesome :)

I'm quite curious as how much time you've spent choosing the cover for this post.

  • Bobodahobo

Honestly, it seems like it would have been more apt to include the cover as the picture for the games-page.

  • TIGSMelly

Not all games based on their covers actually look exactly, or much, like them. I can see the reasoning for that, but I believe it's better this way.

  • rinkuhero

i'm not sure how to answer that. 'just picked the one that caught my eye first' i guess? certainly less than 5 minutes. it isn't a huge deal which one was chosen one way or the other.

  • rinkuhero

that image was already used to announce the contest, i didn't want to use the same image twice in the same blog, that'd be too repetitive. you guys are looking too deep into this (as usual).

  • Mike Hunt

So says the resident text-wall king.

  • rinkuhero

huh? i don't think i write much more than any other commenter here. maybe you're confusing me with someone else?

  • Mike Hunt

What's it to ya? Pat yourself on the back for learning to match IP's I guess?
P.S I still think your avatar reminds me of a deformed Chun-Li…am I close?

  • rinkuhero

was just wondering because i was curious, didn't mean anything by it, sorry if i offended you

but you didn't answer my earlier question :(

what makes you think i'm the resident text-wall king? compared to people like dodger and amn-en or whatever his name is, my comments are tiny

the avatar is from my next game, saturated dreamers :)

  • PhasmaFelis

Haha, feeling a little defensive? I think someone struck a nerve. :)

  • rinkuhero

by defensive, do you mean me or him? if me, no again i was just really curious. i don't even necessarily think he's wrong, i do write more text than most in the comments section, but i'm hardly the king, there are many people who edge me out in huge blocks of text comments here

  • PhasmaFelis

No, I meant the other guy. He got called out for sockpuppeting and was all, “uh, well, uh, YOUR AVATAR'S UGLY!” Just thought it was pretty funny. :)

  • rinkuhero

    ah, i see, thanks

and it's really quite a good avatar at full size, it's just the shrinkage that makes it seem weird. here's the full sized version (it's done by a forum regular, named lurk):

    http://pics.livejournal.com/rinku/pic/0013kb2t

i mean, is that really so ugly? it looks wonderful to me, i'm really happy lurk did such a great job with my game's portraits

  • Mike Hunt

By sockpuppeting, I am assuming usage of multiple nicks to defend/support one's own opinions on this board. I'm not guilty of such…no doubt someone's going to take time to verify this (go ahead). If it's just the mere usage of more than one name, well, yes I'm guilty but the motivation to do so was purely happenstance. For example, this particular nick was inspired by the presence of another member whose name was also Mike. Yes it's not up to some uppity standards some people have, and I don't care. That's what I like about this board, anyway.
The parting shot was a play on Paul's original reply: a postscript that had nothing to do with the subject at hand. Sorry if I got carried away, didn't mean to be TOO mean spirited.

  • Mike Hunt

True, downscaling did this pic no favors. The slit eyes aren't slits after all…anyways it's nothing personal.
