Bastion, the isometric action-RPG that’s narrated by a badass old black man (actually, it’s actor Logan Cunningham), has been released on Steam for $15, just a few weeks after its XBLA release. Supergiant has also put out the game’s OST, which is $10.

Seems like a neat game, but what does the narrator’s skin color have to do with anything?

I reckon he was just hard pressed for time.
This game deserves a bit more than just a 3 liner with some skin color remark.
It’s a beautiful Action RPG, set in a world that has been hit by a great cataclysm. All that’s left are floating bits and pieces of the environment. The environment reconstructs itself as you approach it, which makes for some interesting visuals.
There are some basic levelling mechanisms and every once in a while you stumble across a new weapon or trinkets which further improve your weapons. So far so mediocre. But there’s something that makes this game shine and sets it apart in my opinion and that’s the context sensitive narrator that constantly tells the story and reacts to what you do. While there’s no real non linear plot from what I can tell, it does make a good job of setting the mood.
For example, in one fight I ran fresh out of healing potions. And while the Narrator was telling the story, he suddenly shifted the topic to remark on my lack of potions “Good thing they didn’t know he was fresh out of healing potions” before returning to the story. Quite remarkable in my opinion. I’d recommend trying the Demo at least.

The combat system is really quite nice, with dodging, blocking, powerful counters on well-timed blocks, a bow that does more damage the longer it’s drawn back, powerful “skill shots” when releasing the bow at the right moment, and a variety of enemies with differing attack styles and dispositions. The timing-based things are actually feasible and useful, unlike some other games I’ve played (*cough* Demon’s Souls *cough*). And that’s just the demo.
I’ve read that guy who plays the narrator is actually 21 years old, which is some kind of crazy if true.

Sorry, I’ve been doing some of these posts late in the evening. I actually think the narration is great – it just sounds like an old black dude! Edited for clarity and to point out who the actual voice actor is.

yeah just like your pic of yourself making “chinese eyes” with your fingers and saying “i’m derek yu”

    Races do not exist.

If the narrator actually succeeds reaching Morgan Freeman levels, kudos to the man.

    Surely you’ve heard of elves.

  • dEnamed

Elves are the result of an Anorexia based Youth and Beauty Cult.

Such a great game. Loved the storytelling, and the sound design in general was remarkable.

And Avadon of Spiderweb Software too! The same week!

Although I’ve completed Bastion and Avadon is somewhere there, waiting till I get tired of Deus Ex and every other game.

    But it’s true, I am.
