Minecraft Beta 1.8.1

By: Derek Yu

On: September 16th, 2011

The first half of the long-awaited “Adventure Update” to Minecraft has finally been released, and adds a number of features to support the game’s planned Adventure Mode, like NPC villages and improvements to the combat system. It also adds new enemy mobs, biomes, crafting recipes, and a Creative Mode, among other things. The full list of changes can be found here.

“NPC villages” is not entirely correct since there are no NPCs in the villages. Villages yes, NPCs no.

  • SirNiko

They are, however, villages that will one day house NPCs and were designed with this in mind.

I think referring to them as such is not misleading at all. It just bears mentioning the NPCs will be added in a future update.

  • Meow

1.8 is the first part of the adventure update, 1.9 the second part.

in 1.9 there WILL be npcs in the villages, so “npc villages” IS correct for the whole adventure update.

Ruh roh, my inner release engineer contests that 1.8.1 != 1.81
    (1.81 might happen in a decade or so if somehow a 2.0 doesn’t happen first. ;) )

  • Unimpressed

The ony adventure so far in the “adventure” update is whether or not youll encounter a crippling bug or not, odds indicate you will, sooner than later

    Thanks. :)

NPC villages is entirely correct, but NPC villagers would be wrong. Technically. I’d had these technicalities rammed down my throat via posting on the Millénaire thread :P

    wocka wocka wocka

  • Emo Panda

Over 2 months of development for this? I’m sorry, but this patch was a big disappointment. I find that the only redeeming quality is creative mode and the MP server list.

  • ConcernedDragon

Haha you so funny. Only 2 months? If you followed Cortex Command you’ll wait 2 years and get less!

  • SomeNerd

Also Scrolls, and Pax, and oh I don’t know, a wedding. Besides, there is very little chance you actually seen everything in the update (unless you’re watching videos online, which spoils the whole exploration thing.

Good to know TIGS is still a reliable source of quality entitlement. Never change!

  • Atmeoko9000

They are Villages built by NPCs. If you want to be technical, its not NPC villages at all. The NPCs will just wander around the villages. That doesn’t mean they live there.

  • Tsunamori

That’s what made me stop following Cortex Command. I bet that if I went ahead and downloaded it I’d have a whole lot of fun, but since they basically stopped doing any visible progress I gave up on it

  • Vania

    Same here.

  • Nexxus213

wouldn’t it just start over at 1.0 if that were the case? because right now it’s in beta not release.

  • Nexxus213

err i meant that to be directed to your 2.0 reference not the 1.81 thing.. that part i understood.

Why would it start over?  That creates ambiguities where you have multiple 1.0 milestones and makes tagging releases and making roadmaps more confusing that it needs to be.  If your version always counts upward, it’s easy to sort and there’s never any question about “but WHICH 1.0 release!?”.  There are conflicting views on when you call something alpha or beta (for example, I’d have called the recent “Pre-release” clients release candidates) and how you number for those things (is 1.0 a full release?  Or is it just a shift in direction?  With MC, it’s the latter), but there _is_ a rough consensus that we only progress forward. :)

  • YetanotherguyIam

can a village be a non player character anyhow? I think since a village could never be a character then all villages are NPCs

  • YetanotherguyIam

So, when minecraft is 2.0, will it stop being beta?

  • YetanotherguyIam

Also, this game is a complete minecraft ripoff

  • CAEVSTORI

LISTEN GUYZ I HAVE TO MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR THERE AR NO NPC VILLAGGEEESS!!11111

  • Aghp99

There are npc villages but, no npcs.

  • Idmadj

    You made me lol…

…wait you were being funny, right?

  • Phubans

Does anyone know how to say “suck my dick” in Spanish? If I did, that’s what I would say to Notch. Some kind of update this is. (Last comment as the old Phubans, I swear.) Hi Derek.

  • Phubans

^ Not me, I would obviously have asked how to say it in Swedish.

  • Zuriki

Notch has already dubbed the full release “1.0”.

  • Zuriki

There are villages then. Deserted villages. NPC would suggest they are populated with NPCs.

  • Anonymous

Well, if that happens, you now know it’s really senseless and can join me in my disappointment that they’d do something so needlessly confusing for no good reason.  For now, I’m going to hold out hope that it’s not going to happen like that.

  • sahlen

fuck it minecraft ar best for ever:D

  • Brice Coates
