2012 IGF Pirate Kart

Weighing in at a hefty 1.36 GB, the 2012 IGF Pirate Kart was assembled as a celebration of the small, quirky freeware titles that often go unnoticed amidst the higher-profile games entered into the Independent Games Festival. Over 100 people contributed over 300 games to the project, which was submitted to the IGF earlier this week. Cool effort on the part of Mike Meyer, the kart’s curator, as well as its numerous participants.

The original Pirate Kart was an entry in TIGSource’s very first competition, the B-Games Compo.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. It’s gotten huge publicity already and it’s backed by some pretty big name indies. That and gimmick alone are enough to make it an automatic finalist. It just feels a bit unfair to do something like this, which is purely quantity over quality, when smaller teams and individuals put a lot of work into making stuff for IGF. If I were to come into a cage fight, I’d be pretty pissed off if my next match was against 100 people.

what if they were 100 children

As a contributor, I had assumed the likelihood of getting to be a finalist was rather small. Though the effort is big and getting publicity, the games are mostly terrible. Have you played them? The saving grace is that there is a tremendous number of them from many different genres.

Should not be allowed entry into the IGF for the sheer fact that it contains more than one game. Another factor is that it is not made by a single person or team but many people developing as individuals/individual teams and so there’s ambiguity as to who would get the award and would each person then be able to claim that their game has won an IGF award (100 games claiming they won a single award?).

Multiple game packages should be reserved for game deals or gaining recognition, though I guess what they are doing is pretty clever as they may already know they won’t be allowed and are likely just doing it for the publicity.

Also why isn’t the download mirrored at some place like megaupload or mediafire? I’m not going to download that torrent.

“should not be allowed to enter because it’s TOO indie”

  • Rydia27

I’m not going to download that torrent?? What a wanker, why would u want to download it any other way, torrents are the safest way to download and u can also stop the download and resume it whenever u like, so all i can say to u mate is WANKER!

  • Rydia27

Also, megaupload or mediafire?? why would u want to use them, they can give u virus’s! at least a torrent is safe and u can virus scan it after the download, cause when u click the link on megaupload or mediafire u never know what else is being downloaded with the files. WANKER! just WANKER! I would love to say it to ur face tho cause u really are a Wanker.

    notch brough me here.

Why do some people think this is about getting attention?

Why does there always have to be some fucking ulterior motive?

    ;_;

  • phubans

    WHY DOESN’T ANYBODY LOVE ME?

  • François Tuna

The only games that should be permitted to enter are games that have ALREADY WON an award, and have a publishing deal with an EA SUBSIDIARY or likewise-recognized MONEY-HAVING CORPORATION. That’s REAL Indie. See my IGF rant from 2009 for more.

  • No

    Shut up your mouth up.

  • captaincasanova

I would like to have my game as part of this torrent and yes I have submitted mine to IGF. Is it possible? Yes, I am desperate.

  • Radix

yeah while we were putting this together I’m pretty sure most of us were pretty sure it’d get disqualified out of hand.

but uh it should probably be said that if one entry can make the system unfair then it’s the system that is unfair.

No one makes better games than children.

  • Anonymous

Yeah there’s no better way to get your name recognized than to stick it in a box with hundreds of other names.

I also wish that the download wasn’t so fast, convenient, and advertisement-free. A download link that appears as soon as the page has loaded? No thanks.

  • Guest

It could just be me but when I downloaded this my virus scan said it was a trojan. Just sayin.

  • Radix

You know what, I’m already sorry I just said that. The whole point of this thing was to have fun without the usual gettin’ mad at igfs

  • Radix

Avast is giving false positives on a couple of related games, but they’ve been cleared. Double-check with any other virus software if you want to be sure.

  • Alexander Martin

it’s already been decided that, should the pirate kart win, the award will be cut into as many pieces as there are participants. Everyone involved will be able to claim their game won 0.3% of an IGF award. OH NO THE IGF IS RUINED FOREVERRRRR

  • guest

Alright thanks for the info. Ill just ignore it on this one.

  • Abracadabra

Should be the real winner. Fuck Fez and the rest. This is the real indie people. Take IGF NOW!

  • robolee

Jesus christ guys, I just can’t be arsed to download a torrent client for a single use then un-install it again. Why do you have to attach other reasons? I know there won’t be a virus, I know it can be paused and resumed and I know how it works. I just want a more convenient download location without having to install anything. And the mirror sites were examples there are upload sites available that are ad free and has no wait time. I see that mirrors have been added to the site though but my comment was valid and I stand by it.

And Rydia, really? YOU are the wanker, going on the internet calling people names for no reason giving reasons that don’t even apply to the situation. http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/2/2b/Spy_DominationScout01.wav

About the attention: trying to get noticed isn’t a bad thing and I don’t care either way if they are or are not, why are you all shouting about it like I’m saying it’s a bad thing. I did say it was pretty clever and I appreciate the hard work that went into the games, they are deserving of the publicity.

One last thing; you wouldn’t tolerate the pack if it contained gish and the binding of Isaac and then if it went on to win an award somehow the awards applied to both games even if people liked one and hated the other… Or lets imagine that due to gish it won technical excellency and due to the binding of Isaac it won excellence in design, yet the awards are given to the bundle because that is what was entered, then team meat claim that gish and the binding of Isaac have both the awards given because they were entered as a bundle… yeah that’s the problem, although it isn’t quite the same situation as this pack if they allow packs at all it could happen.

  • James

I won’t download the torrent because I’m a college student and my school’s network prohibits torrenting. THAT’S why. As much as I’d love to play these games, I can’t because I’d get penalized for it.

  • James

You obviously have no clue what “Indie” means, then…

  • James

    SHIT. wrong comment T.T sorry!

  • http://twitter.com/Ax23000 Matt Lindquist

Murder Dog.  That’s all I have to say.  This isn’t just game of the year.  IT’S GAME OF FOREVER.  FOREVER I SAID IN ALL CAPS.  Anyone who disagrees will be destroyed by Murder Dog.  Actually, scratch that, everyone–agree or disagree–will be destroyed by Murder Dog.

I, for one, await my mauling with open arms.

  • ZarathustrA

    Plenty is wrong with him.

  • robolee

Jeeze, my message is really badly worded (early morning, ill, posted late just before bed) here’s a rewording of my torrent comment: There are multiple reasons why there should be direct download my reason: convenience (above by James: a lot of places do not allow torrent downloads).

  • robolee

I would like to make it clear that I have no problems with this pack specifically but with the IGF accepting packs. Loads of people would just starting submitting all their games as packs then how would a single game like Cobalt stand up against a pack containing the Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy and Gish 2 (presuming all were finished and had not won previous awards).

  • Noyb

Congratulations, Matt Lindquist! You are the first person in this thread that has commented on a specific game in the Pirate Kart. I was honestly starting to give up hope, but then BAM here you are with your on-topic discussion.

Couldn’t have happened with a better game than Murder Dog IV. Thecatemites is a genius.

  • Anony

Please understand, your opinion is worth significantly less than shit.

  • Hecka

Just epic Noyb. Epic for the win, Noyb!!!

  • Crowe

You obviously have no clue what “IGF” means, then T_T

  • crowe

    there was a direct download

it jumped to 1200 dollars in bandwidth in about four hours so they had to take it down

it says so right on the page, but i guess that’s hard to notice.
