Updates: By the Numbers

Minecraft, by Mojang

A number of alphas/betas I follow have had significant updates, so I thought I’d mention them together. Also, I’m updating the neglected “Dev Roll” on the sidebar to feature games that are in long-term development.

The first update is from Minecraft, which finally reached v1.0 last month, during the two-day Minecon that was held in Las Vegas. The update adds a proper ending and “hardcore mode” to the game, among other things (full changelog). After the release, Notch announced that he is relinquishing duties as lead developer to Jens Bergensten, who was originally hired to do back-end programming.

It’s worth noting that Minecraft made its public debut on TIGForums on May 17th, 2009. Check out the thread for a “Before They Were Stars”-style stroll down memory lane!

Terraria received a very large 1.1 update that adds more of pretty much everything.

Ace of Spades, the Minecraft-inspired, team-based online multiplayer deathmatch FPS (whew!), has hit v0.70. The above video probably describes AoS and the update better than I can, so take it away, uh… Morgasm. ;_;

King Arthur's Gold

King Arthur’s Gold, by Michał Marcinkowski and Geti, is another fun team game that’s progressing rapidly (build 228 as of writing). KAG recently split into free and premium editions and a Mac version is the latest development. But the interface and game mechanics are also evolving with each new build.

Running with Rifles, by Modulaatio Games

Running with Rifles was a pleasant surprise for me earlier this year. This top-down military shooter puts you in the heart of battle, with large numbers of AI friends and foes all around you. At version 0.4, which introduced online multiplayer, the updates became available only as pre-orders (the current version is 0.52). You can still download the offline build of 0.4 for free, however.

Natural Selection 2 (Build 189) is also looking extremely good these days.

Finally, here’s some footage of Xenonauts Alpha v8.2, which introduces the research tree and puts alien UFOs on the battlefield. The developers have also launched a new website for the game. Also, pre-orders, which were temporarily down due to PayPal shenanigans, are now back up, thanks to Desura.

That’s it for me! What alphas and betas are you following?

Project Zomboid, while progressing slowly, is also shaping up to be a wonderful game.
    Nice post by the way!

wow good update list.  I’m really impressed by King Arthur’s Gold actually, I haven’t been following it recently. I’m also glad to see Minecraft is mentioned even though many fans were kind of disappointed by the supposed lack of significant change from the beta to 1.0

Have they actually recovered from the break in and are carrying on? I keep hearing mixed messages.

Let’s not forget Voxatron on the list. I got a lotta play out of the alpha released in the Humble Bundle recently. I still pick it up when I have a few minutes to try to beat my past Arcade scores.

Running With Rifles is pretty amazing, I’m glad I bought the Alpha. Didn’t Kerbal Space Program also have a recent update, which added ‘the Mun’?

That’s funny Derek… I’ve never once seen you play Terraria but this post makes it seem like you know what’s up.

Oh, I added Natural Selection 2! Knew I was forgetting something!

I probably won’t add any more games to this post, since it’s getting ridiculously large, but I can fill up the Dev Roll, so keep the recs coming!

Got to try running with rifles. looks fun!

  • Theon

Uh, nothing interesting was added to Minecraft, imo.
development seems dead, along with all the unfulfilled promises.

pretty embarassing how you keep furiously sucking yourself off in public, paul

If you can’t tell that my post is steeped in sarcasm I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 suck-offs but this post ain’t one.

heh, just pulled it out again and scored a 4509 on Arcade. I’m sure there are freaks out there scoring 100,000+, but that was 2000 over my previous high score. Little victories… : P

Jeb is short for Jens Bergensten, not Jeb Bergensten ;-)

Thanks, I’m an idiot. I was looking at Jens’s Twitter and brain farted.

Post something about Aces Wild, it’s a beat’em’up with a pretty awesome and dynamic combat system. It just released a new version:

Guys look okay, I’m sucking my own dick, SARCASTICALLY.

Great post! This prompted me to try King Arthur’s Gold, which I’m absolutely loving :D

I have one suggestion though — I’d much prefer to have these updates posted separately (or in smaller batches), even if each of them only has only a couple of lines of text and a screengrab.

That’s because many games won’t be really appreciated in a monster post like this. When I’m procrastinating and check out TIGS, it would be way cooler to read about a couple of games more often, than a large batch less often. I’m not demanding more content, just suggesting a few tweaks to how it is delivered! We need our daily fix :( Keep up the great work guys!
