IGF is a joke.  Clearly the real losers are the finalists. Cause the legitimate indies are the ones who arent in the lil rascal gang of preteen girls who give themselves trophies.

2 LEGIT TO ENTER SUP WHOREFACES

spelunky is a game maker platformer. There is no new technology there. Technical excellence has been reduced to loading a sprite and giving a handjob to your buddy MATTHEW at the IGF

The new Spelunky isn’t made with Game Maker.

  • Slappy

I love Spelunky and I’m looking forward to the XBL version but I have to agree with Draq that Technical Excellence is an odd category for it.

Also wiki says “Fez won the “Excellence in Visual Art” award at the Independent Games Festival in 2008.” Kinda weird.

    Anyway good luck Derek!

Actually it’s the XBLA version, but I don’t see the technical excellence there either. I know TIGSource has a hard-on for “procedural” this and procedural that, but it’s not an achievement. It hasn’t moved anything forward. Will Wright made “procedural” trendy at GDC 2005 when he demoed Spore and said it a couple dozen times in one hour (and also opened the talk by paying lip service to the demoscene)

I think they call themselves indie elite is the funniest crock of crap. The real indie elite arent in their club and they arent in the relaindie elites. They should call it the IGF club not the indie elites. John Carmack is indie elite not derek yu or phil fish or any of those guys. They are hte chumps who  give themselves awards cause the real indie elite is KICKING THEIR ASS

  • DereK Yv

PHil Fish thinks hes awesome but he never shipped a game right? LOLOLOLOL Elite LOSER is more like it!!!!

Johann Sebastian Joust?  Really?! You know, there’s a great video game called basketball, where you go outside and move around with a ball.  The ball has a great physics engine too.

I like innovation as well as the next guy, and the game does look neat, but I thought this competition at least narrowed the margin down to VIDEO games, not “BOP-It Versus.”

Somebody should get to work on that real life ARI device.
