On: April 11th, 2012

The teaser trailer for Warballoon Games’ Star Command has landed, giving us a glimpse into the fantastic pixel art of their upcoming spaceship-management game.

Star Command allows players to take control of a starship in humanities distant future. Players build their ship, staff and manage their crew, explore the galaxy, battle other species, discover far off worlds and attempt to control the universe.

The game is scheduled to launch this summer on iOS and Android devices, but the developers have plans for a future, “Ultimate” PC version as well, which would include “all the campaigns, all the expansions, [and] possible multiplayer.” I can not wait!

Stasis, by Christopher Bischoff

Stasis is an up-and-coming horror adventure game by 3d artist Chris Bischoff. The story revolves around John Maracheck, who’s woken up in an abandoned research facility, wondering where his family has gone. A classic point-and-click adventure game at its core, Stasis is notable for its use of beautiful isometric graphics to immerse players in the haunting atmosphere of the facility.

Hit the jump phubans for two cinematic teasers as well as one gameplay trailer. You can also follow Stasis’s progress on the TIGForums devlog, where Chris shares many aspects of the game’s creation. There is currently no release date set.

Ao Oni

Ao Oni, by noprops

A group of teenagers enter an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town to see if it’s haunted… an unimaginative set up for a horror tale, but thankfully it’s not indicative of the rest of the game. Released in 2009 by the Japanese developer noprops, Ao Oni has since gained a cult reputation for its inventive scares and challenging puzzles. Given that it’s made in RPGMaker XP, the game’s not Amnesia-levels of scary, but it squeezes a lot out of the aging engine to provide a suitably creepy backdrop for the puzzle-solving.

Everything you need to play Ao Oni is available at its homepage, including the RPGMaker XP runtime. There are Japanese, English, and Italian language editions of the game – just download your preferred translation, unzip, and run (after installing the runtime, of course). Keep in mind that different versions of Ao Oni vary greatly in terms of plot and design… older versions are available from other websites if you’re interested (but beware of spoilers).

Vessel

By: Alehkhs

On: March 1st, 2012

Vessel, Strange Loop Games’ gorgeous physics-based puzzle adventure platformer, has been released and is available for purchase on the developers’ site or the game’s Steam page (there is also a demo on Steam).

Three years in the making, Vessel puts the player in the shoes of inventor M. Arkwright as he controls liquid automatons known as Fluros and tries to complete his greatest invention, the mysterious “Accelerator.”

Strange Loop Games estimates about 10 hours of gameplay, and I can easily see myself getting immersed in such a colorful world (let alone one with liquid physics, one of my weaknesses!). And for the aurally stimulated, the game is scored by composer Jon Hopkins (Monsters).

To the Moon

To the Moon, by Freebird Games

To the Moon has been out for a while now, and has drawn some extremely positive reviews for its touching story and music (with a few reviewers saying that they were brought to tears!). The game revolves around Johnny, an old man looking to have his memories altered so that his dying wish may be fulfilled. As the player works their way backward through Johnny’s life, they’ll eventually discover why his wish is what it is.

I haven’t tried To the Moon myself, but I wanted to give fans of good storytelling a chance to try out a game that seems to be superb in that regard. Just don’t expect much in terms of interaction.

Trailer: To the Moon

By: Derek Yu

On: August 9th, 2011

To the Moon is an upcoming adventure game by Kao Gan that takes place in a world where scientists can enter a person’s mind and alter their memories. The only problem? The procedure kills you! In the game, two doctors run a practice where they fulfill the wishes of dying patients by traversing through their memories. The story centers around Johnny, an elderly man whose final wish is to fly to the moon… but why?

It’s an intriguing premise for a game, and the OST, a collaboration between Kao Gan and Plants vs. Zombies musician Laura Shigihara, seems like it will be suitably sentimental. Pre-ordering the soundtrack will get you 7 tracks immediately, with 50% of sales going to charities for autism. The tentative release window for To the Moon is sometime this Fall.
