Omar's Oyster Outing

If you’ve never played the original game ‘Omar’s Oyster Outing,’ I could probably forgive you; screenshots of a single pixel being chased by similar single pixels don’t really convey a feeling of excitement. However, ‘OOO’ really was a great little time-waster. Your goal was simple: survive. This entailed killing zombies with a handful of weapons, managing ammo and other supplies, flying helicopters, and detonating the odd nuclear warhead. But if you missed this gem, no hard feelings.

Omar's Orthogonal Oyster Outing

Now, you really should have taken a look when we mentioned the sequel, ‘Omar’s Orthogonal Oyster Outing.’ Not only did it keep all of the tense, surprisingly in-depth gameplay from ‘OOO,’ but it added a whole new dimension, namely the third. There was something very neat aesthetically about the simplistic buildings and unusually high number of playgrounds. Also, the addition of stick-figure zombies with business ties was good stuff.

Well, this time I’m not even going to give you the chance to miss another of developer Charon’s ‘Omar’ games. In fact, I’m going to mention it while it’s still just a prototype. Go check out ‘Omar’s Oyster Outing 3D.’ It’s got all of the aesthetic charm of the second game, and I assume that Charon will be adding the gameplay characteristic of the series soon. Be sure to drop by, maybe play the first two again (or for the first time), let him know what you thought was best about both, and just be supportive in general. Or, maybe just chill with the zombies, but be ware: they have a dress code…

Omar's Orthogonal Oyster Outing

It’s still quite early in development, but I have to mention Omar’s Orthogonal Oyster Outing, the follow-up to Omar’s first tremendous oyster outing. If only to support charon and get him even more juiced about finishing this bad boy. ‘Cause it’s that great.

The original game, which pitted Omar against a town full of zombies, was an enjoyable action RPG “lite,” that had a number of interesting mechanics, like searching/securing buildings and fighting infections. O^4 so far seems to be that game, but with totally sweet minimal 3d graphics that can be zoomed and panned (using the mouse or the numpad).

The controls at this point are a bit obtuse and require that you have roughly 3 hands – you move with the arrow keys and aim with the mouse, but to shoot, you have to press the Spacebar. ‘Enter’ will get you into buildings. You can see the rest of the controls (and edit them all) by opening up “oooo.gei” in Notepad. This is a good way to get the game running in a window, as well.

Alse, be aware that in certain “omigod zombies”-type situations, Omar may start “panicking,” in which case you will temporarily lose control of his movement!

(Thanks, Alehkhs, I got it! Via Puppy Buckets.)

Omar's Oyster Outing

“”http://www.sinistersystems.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=geeny:projects:zombis">OOO is a tiny, very light-weight top-down action rpg. The game was designed and created over a period of one week, and is all about shooting zombies. And, while the graphics are very minimalistic, there are some neat sound effects and lots of little gameplay features."

I like it – a minimalistic zombie survival game. Unfortunately, the game gets repetitive fairly fast. Fortunately, it appears as though the developer is working on adding more interesting elements, like night/day and survivor camps.

I’m impressed by the amount of atmosphere packed into the game, but a lot more could probably be done to push it. A few more details in the graphics (cars, various debris, etc.) and some lighting effects would go a long way. And maybe some sweet text descriptions for the buildings…

Damn, now I want to make my own zombie survival game.
