When Pigs Fly

When Pigs Fly

When Pigs Fly is a new platformer from Anna Anthropy (Mighty Jill Off) and her first Flash title. It’s a fun, frustrating little game. I finished in 15.25 with 110 accidents, which is surprisingly less accidents than I have each day in real life!

  • salade

is anyone else encountering slowdown problems with this? probably just me. somethings wrong with my flash.

  • Hiro

14.11 with 166 accidents… Kind of bad compared to the average on here, but my Flash was really lagging badly here (It was those ads for Mabinogi at the top, ugh. Every time they moved I could feel my inner pig die).

Still, a fun diversion. Nice to have a platform game that just does what it does without having to throw in some double-jumps and parallel dimension shiz halfway through the game. It’s a nice break, since I’ve been playing La-Mulana as of late and, well.

  • Chris.R

The first time I saw the green stuff (grass?), I assumed it was pig eating acid. Much easier once I realized my mistake.

Also memorable was the first time I saw the pinkish “outside” hole in the wall at the top of the big open room, thought it was the end (hurray!), and then found out it wasn’t, and the next room to be a spike convention.

  • Anthony Flack

Occasional stuttering framerate on my computer makes it impossible to perform with the requisite degree of accuracy. I go from pretty competent to dying all the time once it starts to jitter.

  • d3sphil

    fun game.
second try, 5.52 with 46. Don’t think I can ever touch terry’s time.

    3:56 with 15 accidents, 3rd try

I got lucky and my computer decided to lag the game to half speed that try

  • MisterX

6:57 with 47 accidents on the first and only try. I think having played through Flywrench helped :)

I think this is a nice little game. I didn’t find it frustrating at all, because what usually frustrates me is when you have to repeat too large portions of a level and especially when restarting takes too long. Neither is the case here.
I did find it fun to play because the mechanic isn’t very common, so I didn’t get bored. I agree with Will, though, that I didn’t feel like I was challenged to improve. The difficulty doesn’t increase much and you don’t get better used to the mechanic or so, as it’s just so simple. So, there was also no learning involved in repeating a screen, but I just occasionally had to retry a few times until I got “lucky”.

Still, a fun little game that I enjoyed for these few minutes.

Anyone who finds the “flapping” mechanic enjoyable should also definitely try out Flywrench. On the whole a very different, but excellent game.

    Alright game.

  • Sparky

Thanks MisterX. Yes- everyone who enjoys this should also check out Flywrench. While this is in no way derivative, the two are both lovable in similar ways.

  • Synnah

The Omega room is where I had the bulk of my problems too; I was doing fine up to that point, and then I died about 30 times, and spent about 4 minutes idiotically ploughing into walls and spikes.

Also, Newgrounds reviews are the best thing ever:

Thanks for the review, Kevin Gadd. We, here at KevinGaddMatter.coms, really care about your satisfaction. Because if you’re not satisfied, we’re not satisfied.
So, do tell us how absolutely unsatisfied you are. Because we absolutely care. We really do…

  • Sibah

Does Tim Langdell still suck? What’s up with him lately??

  • entrope

ilu, bullox. yeah, this game is great.

65 minutes and 666 accidents– wait, it isn’t over.

    what? ‘course it’s addictive!

  • pgil

    7:40 with 59 accidents.

I never had problems with the Omega room until I read other peoples’ comments about it. You people psyched me out.

  • Alex

12 accidents, 3:56. Suck my dick faggots.

  • Camdog

My #1 cause of death in the Omega room was the spikes at the top. Just because I’d take off too soon and hit the side of them repeatedly and never learn my lesson.

  • Alex

    im telling you

    ya’ll suck

  • Alex

3:56 12 deaths what of it huh huh

    Second try: 7.30 / 39 (backwards)

    Fun game. :-)

  • Anarkex

Guess what “Omega Room was hard” kiddies. If you just hold space as you pass the spikes at the top, you’ll bounce off the ceiling, but you won’t bounce low enough to actually hit the spikes. It’s a joke once you figure that out.

  • turmoil

Love the game. Great idea, love the graphics, and the sound.

The game is a little on the difficult side (which can be fine), my problem is with the controls. The keyboard control is not very precise probably due to having to whack the spacebar to try and make precision jumps. Even if it’s another key the flying / hovering can be a little daunting because I don’t have the patience to tap away at the “jump / fly” key. If there was gamepad support I think the gameplay would be a little more intuitive.

Again, I love the game itself but it definitely needs a few tweaks here and there because of the unforgiving nature of touching anything with your wings and trying to hover above / below / in-between spikes.

Seeing that others have actually finished the game some must find the controls easy to use, I think there are probably a lot of gamers in the same boat as me though. This is a little too frustrating for someone who doesn’t prefer the keyboard for playing games (it was fine when I was a kid playing games on my Apple ][+ and commodore). It’s not so much a fault of the game, but being 30 something and playing these games with a keyboard is less enjoyable due to the frustration level when the keyboard-to-game doesn’t respond the way you would like it (or the way games used to respond when I was younger :))))) Definitely a reflex thing I guess… but that would be my only gripe, and I think it’s valid.

  • Dinsdale

I’ve played this more times I am willing to admit and still haven’t been able to shave a second off 6 minutes. I swear, those bloody spikes are longer than they appear…

It’s odd how even though I truly do enjoy playing some of the huge, commercial titles, I find the mere thought of replaying them nauseating, but these little things, I swear I could play them over and over again for hours.

Second try: YOU FINISHED IN 5.28 WITH 39 ACCIDENTS

Fun game, not too hard, music/graphics are great, but dear lord those piggy sound effects are really damn obnoxious. Also, the spikes are kind of weird. But otherwise, it was a nice addition to the recent pixelated/difficult flash platformers.

  • K

Great game, enjoyed it about as much as Mighty Jill Off. Currently rated too low in my opinion. My best so far is 4:01 with 13 accidents.

  • K

    Hell yeah! 3:46 with 10.

The only significant flaw for me is how inconsistent the rooms are. Most are easy, a couple are intermediate, but there are about two that make me want to strangle that pig. Ah well, I’m done. Very good overall.

  • Anthony Flack

Difficult and short is definitely my favourite combination.

  • renkin

    First try: 6.15 / 48

Pretty fun game. I see nothing wrong with the collisions and stuff that some other people complained about. I might play it again tomorrow.

  • Al3xand3r

I finished it in 20 mins with over 215 accidents or something like that.

    I thought it was cute.

I’m not going back for a reverse or hard or whatever play.

  • Big Master Cork

Ooh, look at me! I finished in 1:12 with only two accidents!! Woopee! I’m so cool. I must be GOD.

Gee, it’s easy to make up statistics on an anonymous comments list.

  • renkin

Big Master Cork, who are you accusing? And why are you so jealous? ;)

  • Nikica

I’m getting better at this, 4.15 with 18 accidents.

  • havetoagree

I kinda have to agree with Big Master Cork… a lot of these times are unbelievable. I thought Derek’s was realistic, and I towards the end of these comments I think that Al3xand3r’s score was realistic as well. I know my score (time taken / accidents happened) is probably twice as long as everyone elses, but I really find it hard to believe there would be many people with a time under 10 mins. I’m not saying it isn’t possible, I’m just saying I find it hard to believe. So rather than accusing or getting upset with each other people, why not record your game or record yourself playing the game and post it on YouTube. Then atleast those of us who can’t get a time under 10 mins can see that it’s not only possible, but also exactly how well it can be done, all the while proving that you people who are bragging about these scores aren’t liars. :)

  • Paul Eres

it’s funny to imagine dessgeega as reading this and laughing / facepalming at all the ‘my e-penis is bigger than yours’ time comparisons going on in this thread :D

  • MisterX

    @Paul Eres
I much rather thought of it as a simple way of telling her apparently how difficult it has been for someone. Apart from the many detailed comments, the time and accidents already clearly show how the game was easy for some and highly difficult for others.

  • Paul Eres

i suspect she knows it’s difficult — remember mighty jill off?

  • K

I don’t see anything wrong with posting times. It really doesn’t have anything to do with proclaiming you’re better than anyone else, it’s not like getting a high score on a game is a big accomplishment anyway. Scores just provide a bit of semi-interesting information for those who wish to know how others did/ if others found the game as hard as they did.

Even if the primary object was to compete with others, what’s wrong with a bit of friendly competition? High score boards have been a part of video games since the 70s.

  • Dinsdale

I am willing to buy 5 minutes but anything under that… Even without obstacles, the pig just doesn’t fly fast enough! There are couple of screens where you can buy a second or two by dying right away, as the game respawns you closer to the end, but I doubt anyone’s hard core enough to do that.

Then again, I find it hard to believe anyone would be sad enough to lie about their times on an indie gaming site.

5:55 with 43 accidents is the best I could do.

  • iamthejuggler

yeah the whole improving on your time/result is pretty much the point of the game after the first play through. It’s showing they like the game enough to play it again and again. I, for one, am bloody useless and won’t be posting my atrocious score.

  • K

I just uploaded a speedrun to “Gamerdrome” (Bytejacker’s video uploading service). Just waiting for it to be “processed.” It’s not my best but it is below 4 minutes. Thought a couple people might still be interested, especially “havetoagree”.

  • Big Master Cork

renkin, no accusations, dude. just a jokey comment about the meaningless nature of scores on an anonymous list.

i could also make a comment about the meaningless nature of attributing emotions like jealousy to strangers based on a few hastily typed words in an anonymous list.

  • Joe

I heard that Tim Langdell did it in 5 seconds, and he also has a patent on the word PIG.

  • Gaddy

The ending is sweet. You’re not sure if you’re supposed to just fly up or what and there could be spiky electrical danger a la Kirby waiting above but the sky’s slow progression of reddening hues is a clue that you must flap flap flap.

  • Dinsdale

Not that it matters but I just got it under 5 minutes so I guess anything is possible. It took me couple of hundred tries, though.
Maybe it’s just me but some rooms seem so much tougher in Backwards mode…

Also, Tim Langdell will make this game. It will be a multi-platform title.

  • K

If anyone cares to see it here is a speedrun. Gamerdrome only works well with WMV uploads, apparently.
