Mark Overmars, the creator of Game Maker, has announced that version 7.0 of the popular game creation software has been released! Not exactly sure what the full feature list is, but Mark had said something about extensions as being a big part of this build.

What’s really interesting about this release is that the game is currently only available for download at YoYo Games, a UK-based “social network” (?) for gamers that’s headed by Mark and “a group of former and current game industry execs.” According to Mark, YoYo will offer exclusive online publishing and distribution to games made with Game Maker, and the resources available at YoYo will make development on the program go much faster.

Interesting!

    Yeah yeah yeah
Everybody’s frantically trying to create a myspace/Youtube for games these days, but the idea just sounds stupid to me.

I’d be a whole lot happier if it weren’t for the shiny new DRM wrapper they’ve introduced on GM7 ;)

A DRM wrapper for freeware games? Or, for GM7 itself? Please explain yourself oddb0b :D

  • BenH

For GM7 itself. It’s the new method they’re using for registering it. Then again I can’t blame them, the previous system was just a simple serial key system and people were warezing it left, right and center.

  • failrate

I suppose that’s tolerable. I oughtta check out if I can yet buy this in any other way than PayPal or mailing him a money-order.

Not for me it aint ;)

They’re using Softwrap which AFAIC is borderline spyware with its “phoning home to check for chargebacks” system.

Serials going out left, right, centre regardless – there’s lots of less invasive systems they could have used and also, many which don’t require you to compromise your security settings if something goes tits up in order for it to run.

And thats without the issue of what kind of company feels the need to lock down a dev environment in such an idiotic manner.

    One customer lost I’m afraid.

I have been a loyal registered user since version GM v5+. I appreciate that every time Mark Overmars offered registered users the option to upgrade for free. Sort of boosted my loyalty by not demanding more money like others do. It was the original registrants who somewhat funded the ongoing development, so it is nice to get some recogntion.

However I must agree with Oddbob in that the DRM wrapper causes problems for legitimate users. I never buy a Starforce protected game for similar reasons.

I will try GM7 since I am registered, but if the improvements are limited, I will switch back to GM6.

Supposing we should send Mr. Overmars a note politely explaining why we won’t be purchasing GM7, then… and then maybe we can stop talking like we are the Queen of England, innit?

  • http://www.merseyremakes.co.uk/gibber Oddbob

But I *am* The Queen Of Englad…no, wait…

  • Raithe

Aye, is that… I really dont like the idea… and honestly I radther not even use gm anymore… I remember like 5 years ago gm 5.0 was out , and he was stating it was going to be free forever this that and another then he got greedy… so honestly … he just pisse’s me off in general .But anywho you guy’s should make a petition , and then send the petition in the mail to him. :D

  • smart pig

    need free registration key

  • Harry

    Same

  • I Don’t Sell Out

It’s good no one is buying his shit. He’s greedy, it’s obvious that explains the switch to the new version and management, That whole supposed to be free thing was bull, and now look at it, 20 dollars for a Pac Man 2 engine, Pfft, Yea I’ll keep that in my pocket

  • haowan

    lol, greedy. right. yeah.

  • unangheoa

It isn’t Mark who is being a greedy bastard.

It’s YOYOgames! Mark has effectivly sold over about 80% of Gamemaker, so they hold all the keys. They are the greedy bastards.

I’ve tried to find keys but it’s really hard to find any that arent keygens. I bought GM5 and mistakenly bought gm6 reg because I didn’t hear about the free upgrade. I’m definetly not gonna fucking pay £10, I can buy 40 cigs for that much.

If anyone finds a working key then tell us.

Great… people too cheap to even pay £10 registeration… Just use the free one if you’re going to use it at all which can actually create playable games and save them unlike ‘free’ editions of other software.

And if Mark Overmars and Yoyo were greedy they would have jacked the price up to at least £50. £10’s a damn bargain. And using this place to link to cracks? Real classy…

  • http://www.merseyremakes.co.uk/gibber Oddbob

    Yeah, poor show chaps.

If you don’t like the DRM, don’t use it – I’m not. Using here as a warez board though…man, thats kinda low.

Don’t you guys have *any* respect?

  • Derek

Yeah, posting links to warez / cracks is a no no.

I agree with greedy statement. I’ve been there since 4.x and Mark sold him self. He could make much more money from 7 Million /year visitors on his homepage than from registration not worth it.
