xaneneko

[Guest review by Haowan]

xananeko and xananeko scene 2 are punishingly difficult 1-room action-RPGs.

Arrow keys move left and right. Walk into things to attack them, but time it right or you’ll lose health. Don’t get attacked from behind and attack others from behind when you can. The inn costs 50 gold to rest (restore your health), but rises by 50 gold per player level until it maxes out at 500. Up cursor will go up and down stairs and pick up items. Down cursor will drop bombs (after you get them).

You start with a shield and a dagger, although it’s hard to see it. When you rest at the inn, the game is saved, but only the statistics for the character are saved – if you die, and continue, any progress in the game will be reset, any items you have will be returned to the game and you will have to get them again. In addition, after a certain point you will not be allowed back into the shop area to save or shop, meaning you will more or less have to complete the game without saving. I recommend saving with at least enough gold left over to buy the sword and potion.

To win the first room, fetch the sword from the chest in the top left and exit the room through the bottom right entrance. To win the second room… beat the dragon. :)

The first room contains a fairly scary double-ended penisworm, and is worth playing just to see that, I think.

There are also a bunch of smaller games on the nekogames site. Requires Shockwave 8 or later.

I know people say Japanese games are harder than American games but GOOD GAWD.

    Awesome work though.

Punishing but sort of fun. good find.

the monochrome is both endearing and annoying. Eye strain is my usual undoing on the first one. Not having a fucking clue is my undoing on the second.

There needs to be more games like this. It reminds me of when I was in grade school and we used to draw games on a piece of paper. And then take turns trying to make our way through each others levels.

A bit more contrast and a feckin’ clue when I’m meant to attack things (seems very inconsistent to me so I know I’m missing something) and I’d really quite enjoy this.

Yeah, my eyes didn’t thank me for persisting with these.

For attacking – the slimes will hurt you if they are in the air. They will also hurt you if they touch you from behind, and I think this applies even if they are stationary.

The Duumuu (the condom people) will not harm you if you attack from behind, and the same is true of the little black imp people. In fact the little imps are the most dangerous enemy IMO as they are protected by the spikes as well as refusing to turn around.

I think there is some randomness in getting hit as well – sometimes you can attack things from the front and take little to no damage. It probably depends on your defense rating.

For the second room, you’ll need to get hold of some bombs to progress. There are a couple of places you can bomb that will get you a bit further. Get the boots from the chest above left from the frog first.

Woohoo! Just beat the second room. Finally I can stop playing.

How come in the first game I can’t get back into the shop/inn corner after a certain while? What is this based on, how can I solve it, because, Christ, I need to save once in a while.

There is a meter that is kind of like Karma. It builds up as you kill enemies and when full you can not save anymore. This prevents you from just level grinding on slimes for ever. So it is kind of like a puzzle, figuring out how to progress without getting hurt too much.

Later in each game there is a crystal you can get that drains your karma, but it also spawns a copy of yourself that you must fight, and the copy is very powerful.

This has been on TIGSource before, hasn’t it?
