Toribash 3.0

Toribash 3.0: real-time shader effects, reflections, and motion blur are just some of many improvements planned for the next release. Holy hot damn, this looks good.

Those with crappy video cards can always opt for the original look.

Wow. That looks crazy-good. The mixture of matte white shaded bodies, reflective floor and motion blur goes a long way to make the game look more tactile – and in a game about ragdolls punching each other into bloody chunks, feel is important.

Definitely looking forward to this update, and very glad I bought Toribash when it was first released.

Sweet! An indie game thats not gay!

    So. Excellent.

Meh. White bg looks crap whats the point of making it all shiny if its so plane? Looks fake and prerendered. They are always messing with povray on the furoms, cant be realtime

cOntrols are too hard to learn, not worth the effort. Id have more fun eeating dirt than playing this crap

i wouldntt pay for this. its not fuyn

  • Peni

  • Zetetic Elench

Looks… fake and prerendered? What, you thought this game was going to be realistic, or something?

  • RbLcK

This is 100% real gameplay darkness machine, it was confirmed by the developers.

  • Neon

I enjoyed the demo but it’s definitly not worth buying.

  • http://isadorblog.blogspot.com Isador21

People who don’t think TB deserves to be bought make me laugh. You’re only saying that ’cause Hampa gives demo players too much access.
Be less generous Hampa, please, so we don’t get these dumb comments anymore!

  • Givelich

Honestly, there’s a definite argument to be made that Toribash isn’t worth buying. It’s basically a collection of shaders and physics, almost no creative work. It’s the kind of idea just about any run-of-the-mill Computer Science student would come up with.

Sure, it’s entertaining, but I’ve never had more fun with it than, say, Truck Dismount. A new shader doesn’t give me any more reason to buy it.

  • failrate

It is fun and complete. Most game developers don’t even get that much done.

  • Derek

“It’s basically a collection of shaders and physics, almost no creative work. It’s the kind of idea just about any run-of-the-mill Computer Science student would come up with.”

Almost no creative work? What the hell are you talking about? Well, I guess you could say Tetris is just a collection of falling blocks… speaking of which, the creator of Tetris, Alexei Pajitnov, praised the game when he saw it at GDC.

I think the two games are similar in that they’re both very simple concepts that are also fairly brilliant. It’s only after the fact that you can say they’re simple. In fact, I think the best and most creative ideas are simple. If Toribash was as “run-of-the-mill” as you’re saying, we would have seen a million Toribashes before now. But there’s only one.

If you don’t think the game is fun, then that’s fine, but to say that there was no creativity involved is ridiculous. I’ll have to contest that strongly.

  • Derek

Not to mention the visual style is, in my opinion, extremely unique and also stunning.

Could have gone with like two beefy karate guys fighting in a Shaolin temple like every other fighting game, but the way they did it has a million times more impact visually.

  • Jarmund

“Looks fake and prerendered. They are always messing with povray on the furoms, cant be realtime”
As a dev, i can confirm that it is 100% real.

“cOntrols are too hard to learn”
If you had watched the video more carefully, you’d have seen that the controls are getting a makeover as well with a graphical menu-system, thus making it alot easier to learn.

  • Clbck

“cOntrols are too hard to learn, not worth the effort. ” I love that comment. I’m sorry, but did you take the effort to learn the controls? No? Then how would you know if it was worth the effort. It is damn satisfying to rip off heads, kick people hard enough to tear off their legs, and zidane them into oblivion.

    Learn to play. :)

    Peni i don’t believe u’ll give
him 20 bucks for this game..
    You are peni-less haha..

    Peace.

We need an idiot filter on TIGsource.

As with PovRay exporting we are adding include files so you can mod the shading.

Here is a early morning Toribash sambo fight :)

The only real problem with Toribash is that they don’t mention that to get those few spectacular video effects, you have to essentially do trial and error for hours. And hours. And hours and hours and hours and hours…

  • haowan

Just like most complicated games then :)

I disagree, I could pull of some pretty cool moves within an hour with the demo (non-overhauled control system). You almost do not have to go through doing trial and error at all, because you can exactly see what change is going to have what kind of effect.

Anyways, sure it takes practice, but which game doesn’t ?

  • Xander

I think when 3.0 comes around I’ll have to try to seriously get into this again. I tried before but conceptually the entire thing is beyond me. I can’t really concentrate on that many things at once, or complicated processes akin to what’s needed to pull off some crazy moves in this game. It’s a little beyond me. I’m more used to making quick decisions in fatal circumstances (There’s a fireball directed at your face. DODGE! There’s a sword coming towards your groin. WHINCE! Special-move involving a 17 syllabled Japanese overly enthusiastic outburst. REMATCH!)

The higher your ability to think, the faster you get a hold of Toribash’s unique and innovatice controls.
And I second what Derek said, the visual style is just so attaching …
People who don’t get it will just say “theyre just 2 3D stickmen and a white background”
but hey, did you ever see a complete game with a completely white background before?
Everything can be interpreted, and I interpret the white background as a way to concentrate the player’s attention on the “stickmen” instead of the background. The camera helps keeping a basic idea of the space around the player, which makes the background non-confusing. Toribash is otherworldly

  • fish

it looks good but that HUD is a mess.

You can see its affect on your own character’s body, but you can’t see its overall effect. Which means you spend ages arranging to hit the opponent with a particular body part, but then it turns out not to be hard enough and just bounces off or gets halted. And once you’ve found that out, of course, the time step has already passed so if you want to try something different you have to play through the whole setup sequence over again.

  • Derek

“We need an idiot filter on TIGsource.”

That would be like a massive nuke that would wipe out the entire board. :'(

  • http://www.kingludic.blogspot.com Patrick

    That’d make some sweet WiiWare.

  • Xander

Derek dont you think thats kind of an exaggeration
Excuse the lack of punctuation my right hand is currently stuck in a toaster that I dropped a penny into before it was eaten by my dog

    eh. Needs more atmosphere.

“You can see its affect on your own character’s body, but you can’t see its overall effect.”

You can press “B” for a double ghosting, showing both character’s predicted movements.

“And once you’ve found that out, of course, the time step has already passed so if you want to try something different you have to play through the whole setup sequence over again.”

If your move doesn’t go to plan, it’s possible to replay the scenario with “R”, and edit your move at the exact frame you want to change with “E”, taking all of a few seconds.
