Frozen Depths

Frozen Depths is a relatively new Roguelike that’s geared toward newbies, boasting a small command list and straightforward, combat-oriented gameplay. The premise of the game is that you’re sent deep underground to find out why the world is freezing over. On the way, you’ll fight everything from goblins to caribou to… snow-covered hedgehogs?!

The frozen theme is carried through quite nicely. One interesting aspect of the game is that you have to keep from freezing to death by wearing warm clothes, eating hot food, or standing by intermittent campfires. The deeper you go, the colder it gets. It’s a nice innovation that adds a bit more color to this otherwise basic (but fun) dungeon crawler.

I think the 3D Ascii Roguelike Tower needs more attention. So everybody play it, now!

  • Gr.Viper

Yeah, I tried Tower a while ago. It’s even fun to watch!

Hello, I am new to roguelikes and I want to know if Dwarf Fortress is not too hard to start with ???

  • Rz.

Dwarf Fortress is not a roguelike, atleast, fortress mode is not. But the Adventure mode is a relatively simple and subpar roguelike.

  • Rz.

    wow. 3D ASCII… :x this definitely deserves a post~!

  • Gr.Viper

Rz, browse sourceforge regularly and you’ll see a lot of cool stuff ;)

BTW, did they get rid of enormous lag in DF adventure mode?

  • Calanctus

I don’t think it’s fair to say that DF’s Adventure mode is subpar. For one thing, it’s not even close to finished. But even so, it’s still a lot of fun, and I can’t think of any other roguelike with significant grappling or wrestling mechanics.

  • Rz.

yeah, i was going to say it’s very undeveloped, buttttt. i was just telling him it’s not too hard to start out on (simple, atleast from what i remember… honestly i was mostly wrestling children to death)

  • Melly

If you wanna start with rogues, Dwarf Fortress might not be the best pick. Its complexity is baffling. Unless you use guides you can spend hours not knowing what the hell is going on (true, personal story. I suck at rogues).

  • Xander

Wow, so this is a Roguelike I could actually possibly complete? That’d be something. The DoomRL trounced me constantly, although I’m doing alright on Castlevania at the moment.

Also, 3D ASCII? That sounds so unneccessary it’s perfect!

  • CheeseburgerWithoutCheese

this game is fun, but it needs 100% more force of the UCHU variety.
Regarding DF’s adventure mode, sure it’s underdeveloped, but it has the potential to be something far greater than your average dungeon crawler roguelike.
