Geneforge 5

Spiderweb Software has just released Geneforge 5: Overthrow, the final chapter of their Geneforge RPG series, for the Macintosh. The Geneforge games center around mages called “Shapers,” who can create monsters and servants to do their bidding. I don’t have much experience with the series, but the games are well-regarded for their intricate plots and open-ended gameplay. It’s definitely worth checking out for fans of old-school CRPGs.

The full version of the game is $28. A Windows port is slated for March 2009.

TIGdb: Entry for Geneforge 5: Overthrow

  • First I guess?

I used to like this company a lot, but I think they’ve gotten a lot worse recently – oddly, mostly since they switched to CG graphics from pixel-y sprites.

  • Aik

The graphics haven’t really changed since Geneforge 1, and they’ve always been terrible.

Geneforge 4 was great, looking forward to this coming out on PC.

  • Tet

Doesn’t even compare to Avernum 3.

  • Rocker

I’m sick of their champane settings and stupid poo. They should perform something originality for a small amount of coin. Some new thing!

  • pyabo

Champane? You sound like an iPhone app reviewer. “$0.99 is a rip-off!”

For my money, I like the Exile games… You can get the entire Exile trilogy collection on CD (media!) for $25. That’s some cheap old school Ultima-inspired goodness!

  • Rocker

    $0.99 is not enough change.

  • Quetz

I remember getting the original Exile off of AOL Kids downloadable games a long time ago. It was great, along with the rest of the series, but I just can’t get into Generforge or Avernum. Exile 4 lyfe!

Still, I’m glad the games are getting featured here. Spiderweb Software deserves the attention, I think.

  • Quetz

Also I wonder what he’s gonna do after this. A new series? Hope so! Also hope it’s not going to feature more recycled graphics, though.

  • Cobalt

Released for the Macintosh? Don’t you mean Mac OS?

    Genevernumxile: Ruined Overthrow

I think putting the big three together might somehow create their best game ever. A sort of last hurrah for their old franchises before doing something that’s (hopefully) new and different from their classics.

  • PaleFox

Nethergate was actually pretty good, at least I thought so back in the day. It’s not as well known as their other stuff, though. The Celtic/Roman mythos is relatively different from their other works, and the systems are different too.

  • BeamSplashX

Shhhh…if you say that then they’ll just make more of them!*

*I kid. Spiderweb is obviously very good at sequels.

I’ve played through Geneforges 1-4 and I have to say actually that each game improves remarkably on the last. Geneforge 4 is fantastic, I can’t wait to try Geneforge 5 when it comes out for PC. I never liked the Avernums very much though, I much preferred Exile.
