GunFu Deadlands

GunFu Deadlands is a fun and challenging action game that does a good job of capturing the spirit of the Old West showdowns we’ve all admired on the silver screen. The player aims with the mouse and can do a John Woo-style bullet-time dive by pressing the right mouse button. This is an essential move for getting the jump on bad guys, who fire on sight and from long distances.

It’s extremely gratifying to kill enemy cowboys in both bullet-time and real-time when the bullets are flying so fast and deadly. Somehow creator Christiaan Janssen figured out all the necessary ingredients for a Western shoot-out and distilled them into a tight little package. GunFu Deadlands even comes with a level editor to make your own OK Corral to share with friends.

Woo, this is fun, but its impossible to get very far at all on my laptop track pad. Gonna have to wait until I get my mouse set up.

in before: MINIMAL COLOR USAGE AND BIG PIXELS IN MY INDIE GAMES!? I AM ANGRY ABOUT THIS ON AN INDIE BLOG

anyways this is looking totally hot and your description made me want to check this game out right away @ u @ downloadan

  • Jad

Actually since the guy isn’t asking for money for this game maybe the usual argument that I’m referring to isn’t gonna pop up. Let’s hope so O:!

  • r.kachowski

nice to see this on the front page :)

  • deadeye

Who knew things could be so rough in a town full of barbers?

  • http://www.roflgames.com Jo-

Awesome game! Difficult as hell, but satisfying in the end.

  • Foppy

Three barbers in one town?! Time for a gunfight! :D

  • Foppy

Oops that was already mentioned. Anyway this looks like fun! :D

  • silpheed

there we go. this is how to write an article. short, and to the point with just the right amount of personal commentary and not overly preachy.

  • KareemK

you forgot to mention it was conceived in BIGjam

  • HandCraftedRadio

Really great game. I loved how each enemy seemed to have a distinct personality. A multiplayer deathmatch version of this game would be fun.

    congrats for the frontpage, Christiaan!=)

I love this game, glad to see it on the frontpage. Yea, you definitely need a real mouse for it otherwise its way too tough. I really like the choices in color, the limited palette works well with the artstyle I think.

    Nobody loves me.

  • http://vacuumflowers.com/ Sparky

This is fun, thanks for making it.

Possible bug report: I got to a level (possibly around level 8?) and killed everyone, but nothing happened. Is that the end?

  • kiri

Finished on normal mode. This is the best action I’ve had in a great while.

  • Tenth

It’s awesome to see a front page TigSource game that works on Linux… I did have to install an extra package not mentioned in the readme (libdevil1c2) but it was surprisingly smooth sailing from there.

Er, also the game is awesome, I should probably mention that too.

  • Ray

I’d like to see a game like this done as elegantly as this in a 3D FPS.

  • maxc

awesome game. totally agree with derek’s review.

i think the gunshot sound, the one hit kills, and the speed everything goes at combine to make this a really visceral and satisfying game. great job!

  • Teknopants

Hah, I got addicted to this before it was up on the TIGS!
My friends and I played this for about 2 hours or something. The music got a little irritating, so I hit the good ol M button and played The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Soundtrack instead.

All we have to say in response is that there should be more!

We got to the end and were saddened that it didnt get harder.

Hard mode seemed like a cop-out too. We wanted new enemies and such.

But I must say, this is very very entertaining.

  • HaRdCoReGaMeR

This isn’t fun or art. It’s just annoying.

  • Phasma Felis

So is this related to the tabletop fantasy/steampunk/horror/Western “Deadlands: The Weird West”?

  • Bill

This is absolutely brilliant, i downloaded it last night and i was playing it until i went to bed.

    VERY addictive!

    Awesome game!

I recommend playing this with the Planet Terror soundtrack.

  • ChrisJan

Thanks everyone! I’m glad that you guys are liking it.

@ KareemK, R.Kachowski, Grygory: Hi! :) Nice to see you around here

@ Jad: The game is GPL-free software, I am not trying to make money out of it.

@ deadeye, Foppy: Yeah, I should try not to overuse the same buildings in the level design. I just ran out of ideas for new building graphics at one point, but it’s true that it needs more variation in future versions.

@ ortoslon: awesome walkthroughs here. Thanks a lot! I linked your videos from my blog when you posted them in the forums.

@ Sparky: yes, this sounds like a bug. There’s 10 levels, you get a (quite simple) end screen afterwards. I’ll have to investigate this.

@ Tenth: Oh, missed that dependency. I’ll update the readme file, thanks!

So, thanks everyone once again! It’s awesome that you are liking it. This is great feedback.

  • Phasma Felis

If you’re looking for more generic-Western buildings, you might try Stable, Hotel, General Store, Schoolhouse, or Brothel. :D

It would probably look best if you didn’t reuse a given named building more than once a level. Houses and such are much less obvious when repeated.

  • ptoing

Nice to see this finished :D
Came a long way from what you showed me at BigJam. Cool stuff.

  • Nicholasgiacchino

Why isn't this on tigdb? I want to give it a five.
