Painajainen

We all yearn for a sequel to seiklus. Fortunately the Virtanen siblings made one close enough to the real thing for a Finnish game competition. Painajainen tells the story of a boy trapped in his own dream, although the game itself contains platforming elements from both autofish’s famous effort and velella.

Finding and getting butterflies to follow your character grants you special powers, with subtle hints on each ability provided on the same screen. Press enter to access the map and a progress chart. A few bugs exist but can easily be solved by pressing the E key for a quick return to the starting point, while the save game area is located just next to it.

I was quite surprised to learn that it didn’t win first place in the contest. Must be rigged. Anyway, enjoy.

I’d never heard of seiklus, but Painajainen was a lot of fun for the half hour it lasted, even if the controls were a big wacky. I’m surprised it didn’t win, too.

  • No

Seiklus wasn’t so great. Too obtuse. Sparse. Boring.

For me, this doesn’t even begin to match up to Seiklus’ quality… interesting to see the different opinions.

You should review other entries. At least the one that got the first place. It’s the weirdest game involving sausages that I know of.

  • Yes

The two games that beat this game are totally sweet.

I liked what I played of the game, but the collision detection was a bit spotty. I got stuck twice, luckily I was able to find a key (undocumented?) that returned me to the door.

Also, I got all of the key pieces, but it would not let me into the screen with the door for anything. It just kicked me back to the previous screen no matter what angle I approached it. The door graphic didn’t show, just white where the door should be and floating keys.

Finally, is the save option not functional, or does it not autosave?

You have to go into the swirly thingy near the start.
