Gamesindustry.biz has an article titled “”http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=27076">Indie Sunrise" about the success of the Nintendo and the Wii/DS, and how it could possibly herald a “golden age” for independent developers:

In other words, there’s suddenly an escape hatch from the horror stories of the last three years. Team sizes don’t have to double, or treble. Budgets don’t have to soar. Project lengths don’t have to shoot off into the sunset.

To which I say that the golden age (cue dramatic fade-in to Link hoisting the Triforce above his head) for independent game developers is already here, and Nintendo will play a big part, but not the only part. Independent developers have been making their own “escape hatches” since video games first came about.

But yeah, it’s going to be especially fun being indie in the coming years, I tell yah!

That guy in the picture is asiatic.
I think he is Chinese or Korean..
    Maybe Japanese..

  • King-N

Uh yea. That’s Itawa. President of Nintendo.

  • Adam Atomic

    Optional spelling: Iwata.

  • toastie

    A pixel renaissance, my brothers.

  • BeamSplashX

I hate it when team sizes treble. It makes me treble in my boots.

  • Derek

hahaha, I didn’t even notice that.

  • toastie

treble is actually a valid, albeit completely ass-backwards, way to say triple

  • lol

slap an article or game with the tag indie, and it’s on TIGSource. total slackers.

  • Derek

VERY TRUE. THOU ART QUITE OBSERVANT. ^__^

Besides, Iwata was a game designer himself. Treble? That’s something only Manchester United and Panathinaikos can do.

Changing the subject a bit… I’ve got to question the necessity of the “Knytt Stories Countdown” feature in the right hand column.

We all know that hype is a bad thing, and the original Knytt (although I love it) recieved some incredibly mixed reactions.

You guys are not doing Knytt Stories any favours by supplying a “countdown”.

  • Circy

    Forgot to add:

You’re just plying more pressure on Nifflas with the countdown to get the game:

    a. perfect
    b. out on time

  • Skaldicpoet9

I hope Wiiware is going to be awesome:) I just hope that the 512mb memory limit on the Wii won’t be a hindrance for indie-developers….

  • Derek

Circy, if you click the link, you’ll notice that Nifflas put the countdown on his own page and I’m just following that.

No, it’s not necessary. I just thought it would be fun, and people are genuinely excited about the game. Who cares if some people didn’t like the first one?

But I’ll take it down. Saves me the trouble of having to update it.

  • Derek

“You guys are not doing Knytt Stories any favours…”

Damn, I have to be honest, though, when I re-read your comments, it really makes me kinda dislike you. :(

  • Dracko

    1. Nintendo ushering a new age of indie development is a laughable and ludicrous concept. The Wii is hardly a platform any developer who doesn’t have money to spare would want to work on. Or is everyone forgetting Live Arcade or, God forbid, the Internet?

    2. Circy, indie gaming is not about being little darlings whilst avoiding advertising.

  • http://josephkingworks.blogspot.com Joseph

hey I thought the countdown was neato :(

  • King-N

Draco, the Wii is currently the cheapest console to develop for, and the Wiimote could make for some very fun and intuitive games. Let’s just wait and see before jumping to any conclusions.

  • Prio

there was a countdown? I never noticed a countdown.

    > the Wiimote could make for some very fun and intuitive games.

What the world needs is some wiimote games that are fun and UNintuitive!

  • King-N

    How do you mean Prio?

  • Prio

I… don’t really know, actually. I do know that if somebody makes a wiimote game that’s both unintuitive and yet still fun, they’ll be like unto a god.

  • King-N

Sorta like how SSBB won’t rely on motion sensing?
