Mount & Blade

At long last, the mighty Mount & Blade has reached version 1.0! You can now purchase it in retail shops across the United States and Europe, or as a download here, from GamersGate. The final price of the game is $29.99.

As usual, developer TaleWorlds is keeping mum on the changes from v0.960 (their front page hasn’t even been updated to reflect the new release). However, a quick peek around the TaleWorlds forums might glean some info as to what’s been added.

What is this, the banner year for independent gaming? Braid, Castle Crashers, Iji, and now M&B (to name just a few). I’m scared to think what’s going to pop up after the IGF submission deadline! …Maybe a beer angel?

  • muku

  • Dusty Spur

    Dammit, I laughed.

    WHOOOOOOOOP

  • Seitharo

Eh, system requirements are raised yet again. Not interested. If i could afford an upgrade i could afford better games as well.

  • deadeye

Shame on you, Derek! You misspelled “peek!”

A peak is the top of a mountain. What kind of rinky-dink journalism is this?!?

    :P

  • Alesch

    Derek’s afraid of beer angels?

  • Kovski

Uuh, nice… but how did Aragorn find his way into this game?

  • toastie

Mount and Blade is one of the most amazing games ever.

You can talk all you want about games as art, but when you finally catch up to that naked river pirate on your 10 ton armored horse and brain him with your morning star, it kind of puts things into perspective.

  • BeamSplashX

Games let you make art. With brains.

I just went to the taleworlds’ website and there is no news of Mount and Blade 1.0. Is this news so hot it scooped the company’s own website or are you just getting my hopes up only to be dashed?

  • Valkyrie

Taleworlds is supposed to have the download for pre-purchasers up today or tomorrow, so says the forum:

1.0 is indeed out… since about 2-3 days, though any official announcement and fanfare hasn’t happened yet. I suspect to have an idea why… read on:

In the past, any big changes went through public betatesting. 960, even though claimed to be “feature complete” by the devs, was considered to be far from “polished” and “complete” by most players. While the basics of everything were already in, quite a few of details were missing and the economy was completely wacko.

Now, on top of that they did all the following from 960 to 1.0:

    – completely new animations
    – significantly changed 3d-models
    – significantly changed model-textures
    – massively expanded soundtrack
    – modified sounds
    – new interface-designs
    – modified economy
    – new items
    – new item-modifiers
    – modified worldmap
    – apparently significant changes to the rendering engine
    – other stuff which i haven’t discovered yet

All this went through no public testing and apparently was done in…. umm…. 6 weeks, WTF? Either that, or at least the media-changes were already done before, but intentionally not included in beta builds. In any case, what this means is that 1.0 contains lots of changes which didn’t go through external testing.

In other words, you can expect a patch quite soon. Maybe they want to do a patch fixing the most important things in a matter of a few days, before starting the big fanfare. Why they would do that instead of just doing another beta is anyones guess…. though, maybe there isn’t that much to guess… an explanation for all this isn’t that difficult to find.

  • Valkyrie

Actually, there has been a semi-official announcement (complete with download for pre-purchasers):

  • Lyx

Yup, i was right. First patch out :)

  • trav

taleworlds have always been pretty crap at announcing stuff to their fans.
I was asking for a release mailing list / RSS feed for AGES and there was just no interest in it.

I forgive them though for making a game that lets me impale bandits on my giant horse pole

  • withalligators

“Mount and Blade” is a great double entendre.

  • wormguy

I downloaded the demo thinking it would bore me since I had gotten bored with the old version and I ended up playing it for 3 hours.

  • Scott

I’m not sure why they had to make it so hard to find and upgrade to the new version.
