Gravitron 2

I forgot to mention – Gravitron 2, the vectorized thrust ’em up from Dark Castle Software, is now on Steam. The developer, X-Out, told me that this version has a lot of enhancements, and addresses the issues that I had had with the game previously. Very nice work!

I am being on first of postings!

What? You have to PAY for it?!

    …methinks I shall pass.

  • Dracko

You had to pay for it before it hit Steam too. Where’s the problem?

God forbid someone try to make money from their work.

  • Bajatar

It’s only 5$ and totally worth it. The game has a nice visual style and it’s a lot of fun; even more so because he addressed concerns of players quickly.

  • Cas

It’s dead worth it but PLEASE don’t buy it on Steam GO DIRECT TO THE DEVELOPERS SITE YOU FOOLS!

  • Mark

… unless you like the idea of being able to definitely download it years from now. Then buy it on Steam. Plus, supporting indie software through Steam makes it more likely that MORE indie software will be picked up BY Steam.

Which is a good thing for indie software.

Yeah, seriously. What’s up with this cult of Steam, lately? It’s like when 2D boy announced that they’d be releasing World of Goo DRM-free and the comments were filled with people BEGGING for them to put the game on Steam. Not because they think it would be a better platform for providing exposure for the game, but because they want their own individual copy to be running off steam instead of a clean DRM-free installer.

    Why???

  • AmnEn

Because Steam is an established service when it comes to buying games online. You just know when you buy, you’ll have it. Which is not a given in online distribution.
After having a lot of financial trouble with Indie Gaming, I’d rather pick DRM overload Steam over having to toss E-Mails back and forth for 2 months before you get what you paid for.

  • Bajatar

The Steam cult is really weird. I won’t buy anything from Steam (or any other such system). I am looking forward to the day their DRM servers get shut down, though. It’s going to be a hell of a mess.

I know I know, it’s not going to happen, etc. Maybe they’ll just recommend customers to circumvent the DRM (which is illegal in many countries) just like Yahoo, Microsoft and Walmart did, when they decided to shut down their music DRM servers :D

  • Cas

I’ve got no problem with Steam but when there’s a choice of getting it from an indie developer direct or giving most of the the money to big old cuddly Valve I know what I’d rather do.

Let’s not forget here that the experience is generally much better when bought direct from the indie – you get guarantees, you can ask for your money back, you generally get great customer service. This is not the case from Steam. Just try getting your money back for Everyday Shooter.

Sorry to stoke the fire, but it’s an important point.

There’s plenty of incredible independent games out there that I’ve ponied up for- World of Goo, Mount & Blade, An Untitled Story (When it was donationware), Depths of Peril…all good and worth the cost IMHO. I’m just against shelling out $5 (or any amount, for that matter) for something I won’t enjoy. Good effort on Dark Castle’s part, but I’m not buying it.

There’s nothing independent about buying games that you don’t enjoy.

And Steam gives me the jibblies–I’ll avoid Steam if at all possible!

  • Dracko

    Then don’t.

    That’s how markets work.

    Jesus Christ.

  • ngajoe

…actually it’s not an important point at all. Go figure.

  • X-0ut

Absolutely, no point buying a game if you wont enjoy it.
Speaking of which, I must buy world of goo!
