Game Jolt Contest

Gamejolt are apparently a portal for freeware/opensource games similar to Kongregate. They’re also running a weeklong contest ending on the 20th of June where contestants are being asked to finish a game simply surrounding the theme of SHOCKING..
whatever that exactly means to you!

The twist here is that the three chosen winners will be placed into the closed beta of Gamejolt’s Ad Revenue Sharing system, which is designed to allow games featured on the site to accrue income via advertisments. First place also wins a free game from Steam, which whilst not exactly as exciting as the other prize is still pretty damn swell given there’s plenty awesome out there you should have your eye own if you’ve somehow missed them. Does anyone else think Crayon Physics is over-rated?
It’s a swell sandbox sure, but in my honest opinion the creator failed to actually construct a challenge for the player, instead demanding him to make up his own ones for given “levels”.

There’s basically a single solution that works for most cases and the game only seems ‘deep’ or ‘tricky’ in the more obssesive player youtube videos.

Game took me a lil over 2 hours to complete and with 60 or so levels never really made me “look outside the box” or shuffle tactics and thus seemed almost like a chore, unlike the highly deservant Braid (except the in it’s own bottox ‘plot’).
And with the weak developer-graphics, I really don’t think CP deserves all the hype it got and is a slap to the face of the more deservant titles that got put on the same shelf like World of Goo.

I’d do some simple game with goatse as the winning screen. That would be shocking.

the steam game is more interesting to me than the revenue sharing thing, considering the site’s current traffic (though perhaps this post will help that), but i hate contests that are this short. we all aren’t cactus, we all can’t make a good game (or even a working game) in less than a week.

NW: being an illustrator, i love crayon physics. i probably finished the game in the same amount of time that you did but the fun in playing it was all about being overly elaborate and creative with the puzzles, even though shorter and simpler solutions would have worked.

I can see how Crayon Physics would be amazing to people that haven’t played stuff like the Bridge Builder series before.

But I’m not sure why we’re talking about it.

This is definitely in contention for the most underwhelming prize ever. Is there any reason why it wouldn’t be better to just submit a game to Kongregate? What exactly is the point of this site?

@bateleur : are you suggesting that the ‘mad indie cred’ that TIGSource competition winners get is worth more than an actual concrete prize?

I still think it’s very possible to make a game in a week, but I was hoping they would have announced this much earlier, maybe a month or two in advance.

@nihilocrat: Sorry for the short dead line. It was planned in the last minute as just sort of a fun thing to do. We’ll be holding monthly comps after this. We didn’t want to wait longer than a week, so that we could start letting people into the beta sooner.

Similar, yes. Exactly like, no. :P I was supposed to help Cros with updating the layout with my custom vector graphics, but health got in the way, plus I’ve been a bit busy. I hope to get to work on that eventually, but till then, I hope you all can overlook the similarity in set-up and see the site’s good points.

@defacid – i used to go there when they were at their old address, but after their move i haven’t been there as often. and if you bothered to check my site you’d actually see that most of the games i’ve released i’ve made in 48 hours. still, i think it’s a minority skill, even if some of us have it.
