Teaser: Hawken

By: Derek Yu

On: March 10th, 2011

This breathtaking footage is from Hawken, a first-person multiplayer mech game that’s being developed by an indie studio of 9 people, including the talented artist Khang Le (whom you may remember as part of the ill-fated Project Offset). Adhesive Games is using UDK to create the game, which will feature multiple team-based modes as well as a free-for-all deathmatch mode. There’s no word yet on release date or platform, but they’re targeting downloadable services for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

    I CAME SO HARD

I wanna lock myself into a little room and play this game for a year. The design is breathtaking and and ' ___ ' this is the game I've been dreaming of. Lemme play. NOW

  • Negative 0

Beautiful environment designs. the mechs are cool too. definitely something to look forward to.

Super awesome etc. but streaming textures – kill it with fire!

  • Peevish

    Holy shit that was beautiful.

  • Fernando Ramallo

Wow. I hope they can match the mechas animation and movement quality to the backgrounds. You make backgrounds like those and everything that's not perfect stands out :P

Who says that videogames are not art?

  • http://twitter.com/knitetgantt T. Gantt

I want to play this. Right now.

  • Snow

My eyes just fell out of my head (so I'm typing this blind). That was insane. That was like mixing Neill Blomkamp with beautiful sci-fi artwork and turning it into a game. When I first loaded the page, I thought that the video still was a highly detailed concept art image… when it started moving, I was blown away. Very looking forward to this (as soon as I can find my eyes).

  • Asdas

Camera Shake is really unrealistic but rest is awstome

  • Gloenk

The Mech motion reminds me on TANK JR from Quake 3 arena

  • macht

    designer awesome, but lacks direction

  • Rild

hmmm, finally Battletech looking the way the future was suppose to look, hopefully we will get the ability to mod so that the original c64 version can be remade with this HFCIT look

    Jawfloor.

  • Epic gamer

LEvel design! f'n AWOSME!! noot so sure bout the transition in the anim set.

  • Anonymous

Looks great except that all these robots seem to be having seizures.

  • Kensoy

They move like that because of the mouse movements, but it's still early so we'll see. Very nice looking game though! Keep it up!

  • http://twitter.com/dsi42 Edward G.

Looks cool but I thought these were robots or people in exosuits, not mechs. They don't move anything like mechs, at all.

  • corv

Wow, looks like something out of a Masamune Shirow book

  • lugburz

OK now, THIS is worth making.

If you're going to bother doing anything, go big.

  • Guess-T

    This looks sexually explicit

  • http://twitter.com/LeetAmerico LeetAmerico

That looks amazing! It's definitely the kind of game I would play. I'm going to keep an eye out for news on it.

  • Ben B.

Looks awesome but I agree with Edward G. The fun of driving a 'mech to me is the big, deliberate movements that make you feel like you're piloting something huge and powerful. It's like comparing the lightsaber movements between Empire Strikes Back and The Clone Wars.

  • J-SNAKE

Hideo Kojima says video games are not art.

  • Del_Duio

Awesome work, but does anybody else think that a “small indie team of 9 people” is.. ah, well a HUGE indie team?

  • Tzontlimixtli

Looks a lot like they were inspired by District 9 in terms of scenery and camera use.
I fully approve of this. :]
The mech fighting looks fun, too!

  • asdfffdsa

Those are some pretty sharp visuals, but the gameplay in its current state doesn't look much different from UT [team ]deathmatch with jetpacks and mech models (ie that “stop-and-go on a dime” side strafing characteristic of any deathmatch game). Do they plan to add any aspect of mech simulation to it? If so, then I'll truly look forward to this.

This reminded me of Naumachia so I went and checked on that game's (lack of) news. I hope this game doesn't die.

  • Briker Ed

They should put those environments to a better use i my opinion…. open-world-Omikro(ish)-action/rpg whatever and let us enjoy the scenery at a slower pace. Or make robot battles just a part of something…. bigger.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1020514090 David Pucko

    Oh wow :o

  • PhasmaFelis

Damn, those cityscapes are amazing. The brief in-cockpit shot at the end is lovely, too. But yeah, the mechs move too much like FPS soldiers, not enough like mechs.

Multiplayer only, huh. That's a shame. I'd kill for a single-player mission-based/open-world game in this setting.

  • Quaz

All the mechs move jerky because this is a recording of a networked match (IE there is client-server lag)

Looking amazing, and i quite like the way the mechs move on the ground, reminds me of heavy gear, but also of the lighter mechs in MW4:V.

A “Cougar” model mech with jump jets and maxed speed stats moved almost identically to the robots in this video, and it has a very MW4-ish feel to it.

  • akuryo

Kojima is a retarded person. He said video games are not art because the “artist” isn't in TOTAL control of what the player sees. Now that's bullshit, you're never in control of exactly what people get from your art, either music, or graphics or whatever.

Go die Kojima. I loved MGS, I did, but now it's time to die.

  • Guest

Mech game? No, this is Tribes with robot skins.

It looks great except for the environment smoke which looks horrible and out of place. (the smoke from the “mechs” looks nice though)

  • Trunxkam45

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS This is EXACTLY the style I've wanted a game to follow for a LONG ASS TIME. CYBERPUNK NEO HONG KONG!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/defacid Shaquille Stoutamire

I know it's been said, but I'll say it again:
    – Work on the smoke. That was the most disturbing of the two things I saw. How can you have such a beautiful game and smoke that looked so… off…
    – Jumpy/Laggy animations. This would have been so much more “draw jopping” (:P) had it been smooth and realistic.

This may be the greatest looking game I've ever witnessed, besides those two minor defects. I am amazed.

  • http://twitter.com/goshki Adrian K.

The design, architecture, colors… it's all so beautiful. But the most stunning efect for me is the mothership looming over the city. Absolutely fantastic!

  • NVWSSV

Except that lightsabers are a terrible example, seeing as they don't actually have any mass. If anything, the prequels are the way that it should have been done from the beginning (although there's little else to recommend in them).

And they SERIOUSLY need to work on the smoke effect. It looks awful.

  • Professor Opinion

    SHOGO!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Brien/633426460 Tom Brien

Wow this is cool as FUCK! I love how the buildings look like they were built in a community that's expanding too fast.
Like there's so many extra pieces bolted on to all the buildings, and everything's all scrapped together n looks like– basically high-rise slums.

I was actually dissapointed to see that it's a deathmatch multiplayer fps :/

  • Knuked

    Damn fine looking !!

  • Doesnot

To be honest I was mightily disappointed when I found out it's actually a stupid shooter. Art really invites you to go into those buildings and discover more about the world.

  • http://www.godatplay.com Godatplay

That's exactly what I was thinking. I fell in love with the game represented in the first 40 seconds, but was otherwise bored by the game represented after 40 seconds. :P

    Freaking AWESOME environment art.

  • http://www.godatplay.com Godatplay

It brings up an interesting question. Is the art actually TOO good for this kind of game? Wouldn't one get distracted by the beauty during play? Maybe the environment is too seductive, haha.

  • gamecreator

Nah. Anything can be blocked out once your “life” is on the line. Don't care for mech games but almost wish there was a single player mode where I could take things at a slower pace.

  • Daivuk

I hate the fast movements too. But my guess is this is based on Japanese Anime. If you watch Apple Seed and such, mechs do those fast strafe and all with their boosters. I am not a fan of this, but I can see it appeals a lot of people that are already fan to those Japanese Anime. Good work!

  • Tiganon

So it's basically a remake of Mechassault. Only a lot prettier. Yawn.

Give me this art in a Xenogears-type RPG or something and I'd be all over it. Hard to get excited for a game I got bored with in 2002 though.

  • Ben B.

Yeah you might be right, but in empire I just loved the idea that it took an incredible amount of force mastery to even use a lightsaber. . .the deliberate movements just made for a lot more drama and intensity. I can't even tell wtf is going on in most of the new lightsaber duels, which to me = not as much fun.

  • Sdgfjh

Yeah, I would love to see this at the very least moddable so that a 1-player experience could take advantage of that lovely engine.

I'll be watching this one close. It reminds me of Soldat. I loved Soldat.

  • Negative 0

No. wat i believe Derek was referring to is that these guys are indie and attempting to make a AAA quality game with a small team in a short amount of time compared to most AAA productions which can end up having 30+ developers. some studios can have well over 200 working on one project at a time.

  • Negative 0

Horrible idea. This is a small team we're talking about. RPG's are generally massive games due to story and role-playing elements. The developers are being smart with their choices in game design, keeping it focused on a single core gameplay mechanic.

  • Negative 0

lol, i'm surprised none of the above posts realized the issue was with networking/lag/latency.

  • IndieElitist

Aren't we supposed to hate this?!?

    I mean, it's 3D.

    It's got next-gen FX.

It's using an evil engine, like Unreal3.

It's not all cute, abstract and unnecessarily hard.

It's just a standard arena MP FPS with really pretty landscapes and post-FX.

Aren't we supposed to hate this?!? ;)

  • Keepindiealive

No low res 2d, no interest sorry.

I don't even hear any chip tune music, this is not indie.

  • dustyspur

    video games aren't art

  • Banana

…and god is a grey haired old man who watches over us.

  • god

of course not, art is video games.

  • Guesty

Graphics like these are wasted on a multiplayer game.

  • Grrr

PLEASE dont turn into another project offset. This looks amazing – the kind of game that defines a time period.
