Scoregasm

Scoregasm, by Charlie

Scoregasm is the latest from Charlie, creator of Space Phallus, Irukandji, and Bullet Candy Perfect. It’s an arena shoot ’em up where the goal is to keep your combo number up by destroying enemies repeatedly. This also replenishes a Close Range Attack that earns double combo points and also turns bullets into high-value hearts. If you maintain your combo count toward the end of the level, you may qualify for an extra-intense “Scoregasm Frenzy” (cough) that offers up big scoring opportunities and opens up alternate level paths.

Presentation-wise, Scoregasm doesn’t seem to distinguish itself from the other glowy arena shoot ’em ups out there (aside from the moaning!), but the Close Range Attack is fun. Check out the demo, which features roughly a third of the game’s levels.

TIGdb: Entry for Scoregasm

I just tried it and unfortunately there’s nothing special about it. It’s just a plain arena shooter. Yeah, the close range does its thing. Sobbing meh. I was really hoping for something awesome. Where are you Grid Wars 3 when we need you the most?

  • Snail Mail

Is there a Grid Wars 3 in the making ??? WHO, WHERE ?

  • Marcusjclark

If you think this is “just another arena shooter” (and I’ve played a lot of them) you are sorely mistaken. It’s got challenges alongside the normal stages, non-linear progression, a scoring mechanic with some depth to it, achievements and online leaderboards
This actually takes the whole genre to another level. if you actually enjoy arena shmups then this is definitely the cream of the crop :)

  • John_fox45

Marcusjclark : aw come on. Innovation in the genre is what he was probably referring to and being an arena shooter fan myself I gotta admit this is regular stuff. The tone of the article kindly reflects that fact, me reckons ;)Snail Mail : Not as far as I know but Squid in a Box’ Waves is coming out soon and it’s looking proper fun.

  • QweBid

yo when you play I like the girl going aah like she’s getting some action ! Gets my vote

@a15d3c5afd05f4e3d7c9c4715f0c70f1:disqusHave you actually played the full version of Scoregasm then cos I’ve always liked Mutant Storm and Geometry Wars, and Scoregasm is definitely up there with them. Which arena shmups float your boat?
And yeah Waves is looking awesome if the demo’s anything to go by, but a bit more abstract and cerebral eh?

  • Snail Mail

Yeah I’ll be spending my cash on Waves. It looks like teh shiznit, yo.

Am quite loving this, mind. Cheers for the mention Derek!

I have to weigh in a bit on Scoregasm’s side here.  It’s fast and fun and the climax pacing created by the Frenzy/Scoregasm mechanic is a big improvement on many games.

Waves?  I just tried the demo and don’t honestly see the big deal.  The music’s awesome, but the game just seems fairly regular, and the voice over is a blatant GLaDOS ripoff.  And why the heck it needs to install PhysX and the Unreal Engine for an arena shooter I have no idea.

  • siegarettes

I am totally with you on that. I’ve played a lot of shooters in general and this has go to be one of the best. The level design, game mechanics and creativity on display is pretty great. Waves is actually pretty generic in terms of visuals and mechanics as well.

The non linear stages and the way Scoregasm encourages aggressive play are all positives. Unfortunately shmups are a quite common genre nowadays and it’s easy to judge them without learning the more in depth mechanics at play.

  • JesseV

I bought it yesterday and now I regret buying it. It looked fun from the screenshots but the gameplay is boring.

  • siegarettes

I think its a damn fine game. But it may not be your thing of course.

Probably should have tried the demo…

  • JesseV

    I’m a sucker for glowy things :(
Siegarettes: Could you please recommend a top 3 or top 5 arena shooters on PC ?
