Mutant Storm Empire

The internet sighs in blissful nostalgia today as Mutant Storm Empire hits Xbox Live Arcade! Only $10 / £6.80 / 800pts, it’s pretty much the same pricing of PomPom Games’ other two main shooter releases, the original Mutant Storm and Space Tripper on the PC, and Mutant Storm Reloaded which is also on the XBLA.

So far, it’s been a damn blast to play, and the best way to describe it is a Space Tripper/Mutant Storm Smoothie. There are 4 worlds and 4 levels in each, but each level contains a different variety of battle situation. The first level, for instance, is a progression through rooms, whereas another later on is an arena-based affair like the previous Mutant Storms. And another will encompass you in a square field as it moves horizontally across the playing field. Regardless of setting, it controls simply, with the left stick for movement and the right stick for shooting. The triggers can also be used to fire a super-charged version of the regular shot, but ammo is limited and only replenishes at the end of each level so use it wisely!

The style of the game is fantastic, and encompasses a lot of themes from PomPom’s past and other shoot ‘em ups. The second world in particular has a much more organic feel to it than the rest of the levels, and the swarms of fish-attackers especially are pretty damn swish. Nods to Space Tripper are also prevalent, including a spider boss and shielded spawn-cores. It’s basically good old-fashioned PomPom fun. It’s simple, affordable and plays wonderfully.

It’s also a lot closer to Space Tripper in terms of length, so don’t expect to pour Touhou levels of time into this one, but with 5 difficulties to plough through (Black Belt currently handing my ass to me on a silver platter), there’s certainly your money’s worth in there. If you’ve got a 360, there’s no reason not to check it out, at least for the three-level trial!

Further reading: Derek interviewed the PomPom duo a couple of years back, and it still makes for an entertaining read, in case you need a break from smashing your joypad against a difficulty spike.

Yeah – this game is very polished, short and sweet. However, you’re unlikely to be beating it on Black Belt mode anytime soon. Even the first room of the first (of 16) level is bullet hell incarnate on the highest setting.

Plus, those aiming to top the high scores aren’t even allowed to use the single powerup offered – a super-powered shot mode that lasts for a few seconds per level.

Played the demo and once I get around to sticking more points on my Xbox360 I shall definitely purchase it. Woo! Good explosive fun.

Game is amazing save one thing…

I can’t configure my shots or movement to anything other than the sticks? This makes me a sad panda…

Aside from that, cheers to another great entry from PomPom! Nice to see Meadow and BongPig still got it.

Why would you WANT to configure the controls away from the analogue sticks? I mean, yeah, it might be that bit more retro, but you’d also be losing a lot of control.

I mean, if you want to make things arbitrarily harder for yourself, you CAN bind both movement and shooting to one stick. That might be fun, in a retarded kinda way.

Aaah… so that’s why it’s so damn hard *slaps forehead and shakes head*

I’ve only played the trial, but it seems like it’s pretty sweet. Something about it just feels better than Reloaded.

XBLA is just trying to spite me, now. I’ll never be able to save up for Portal at this rate.

    Oh baby. *oh baby*

This may be the straw that forces the camel to buy an Xbox 360…

On the off chance that one of the developers is reading this:

Your “buy” link for purchasing Space Tripper is dead. I’ve been wanting to give you guys my money for that game for months but your forum is down and you aren’t responding to any emails.

Although if you’re through with selling Tripper and plan to release it freeware like Pumpkingames did with Alien Invasion that would be fine as well.

  • Xander

No idea about the online purchasing, but I have spotted it a couple of times as a budget PC release in-stores, so if you really want to get a hold of it, it should be possible to track it down somewhere.(I’m not sure how much they’d exactly get if you bought it like that though. I always sucked at the fiscal side of gaming)

You may be able to buy it through GarageGames.

Hmm, the seem not to be selling them any longer.
