100 Game Maker Games in 10 Minutes

By: Terry

On: September 29th, 2008

You’ve seen those 100 games in 10 minutes videos, right? There are NES versions, SNES versions, C64 versions, and loads more I’m sure.
Over the last couple of weeks Paul Eres has put together a brilliant Game Maker equivalent! A list of all 100 games is available on the GMC thread.

[edit] What the hell, Vimeo? Man, I used to think you guys were cool.

  • defacid

This isn’t made of win, it is win.

  • Chris

    It’d be neat if it showed the game names in the video. I know there is a list, but that doesn’t help me when I see something neat that I want to try surrounded by games I don’t recognize. (;

  • Paul Eres

I intend to update the list later with time signatures and links to each game, so check back tomorrow or so.

  • Benzido

    Kind of humbling.

  • nich

can you add tags to sections of time in vimeo vids? web 2.0 for the lose.

  • bateleur

I love the clip with a dude just sitting on a snail and nothing happens!

  • ithamore

    Wonderful.

    Thank you Mr. Eres.

    It was an enjoyable watch.

Some of those examples were probably pushing Game Maker to it’s limits, and I was delighted to witness how Game Maker and game design can be (especially in so many ways).

    Once again, thanks.

  • Alan Gordon

I’ve only played 30 of these! Clearly I have work to do.

  • PHeMoX

Cool, there are a couple of gems I haven’t played yet either. They should do this for more of the game engines!

  • Pip

Or just for indie games in general.

  • DarkFalzX

I am kindoff disheartened my game never made it on there. I guess with a name like Maziac it was discarded as “some n00by crap” by everyone.

  • Paul Eres

There were way too many good games to include, just because I excluded one doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. I mean, I even cut out most of cactus’s games, and only kept like 7 or something, despite pretty much all of them deserving to be on this list.

  • Moi

Very nicely done. This vid really makes me want to try my hand at GM, so it’s a succes!

  • Paul Eres

I updated the list with time signatures for each game. I’ll get in links eventually.

  • Alexitrón

Thanks for the great video and for including my game , The Power.

(Yeah, I always self promote like that)

  • marbs

Good video, surprising how many games I recognise and have played, and thanks for including my game Dominos 2 :)

  • Patrick

Game Maker is definetly the platform from which the most relevant indie games have emerged. I used to think Flash was where it’s at, but have been converted.

  • Spkl

this is awesome, I’m downloading almost every single one I havent played.

  • Paul Eres

It’d be interesting to have a torrent of all the games, so someone can just download them all at once. Although perhaps that needs permission first.

Anyway, I updated the Vimeo page again with links to each game, which should make downloading them easier.

  • Derek

Hell yes, I love things like this. Great work, Paul!

  • Dusty Spur

Shadow Barkley’s sprite makes me laugh *every goddamn time*.

  • http://www.wyrdysm.com th15

    Cool beans Eres man.

  • trav

wow, that’s a really good watch, most of those games look really fun and/or interesting. I had no idea game maker was capable of doing good stuff, I think I just automatically discounted it as a new version of klik’n'play when I heard the name

  • Valkyrie

    YES! Gotta love some Barkley.

Awesome video. There were a lot of games on there that looked really interesting. Thanks for putting all the links up and everything. It’ll make up a good part of the next month for sure.

  • Ezuku

This is awesome. I never realised many of those were made in gamemaker. Now I want to make something :P

  • Bill

I’d love to know what song that was at 5:14. It’s awesome.

  • Nekura

Fantastic video Paul. Thanks for putting this together. Like some of the others, I had no idea Game Maker was capable of such amazing looking games. (TBH, I don’t know much at all about GM.) This is a great portfolio, however!

  • alspal

The “NES versions” link doesn’t work.

  • PHeMoX

    There’s even more?

    Can’t wait for a Top 200 in 15 minutes then. ^^

  • haowan

    omg vimeo axed it

  • Critic

apparantly the vimeo page for the video was deleted just a couple seconds ago. so… no more links to the games. Any info on this? The links being put up anywhere else?

  • idiotmeat

vimeo does not like video game videos as they are not “creative” enough.

  • Paul Eres

It’s now on YouTube instead. Search YouTube for 100 Game Maker Games in 10 Minutes and you’ll find it. Someone can edit this post to embed the YouTube video instead later. There’s a link to it in the forums but I can’t post links here cause the comment spam filter eats them all, but the video ID is:

Vimeos new policy sugks so much…

  • cougarten

is “game maker” a programm or just standing for such small games?

  • JOOLA

Best video in some time! I love it!

  • Guert

Game maker is a game making program.
    Here’s a link.
    http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker

  • Massena

Game Maker is a program by Yoyo games used for uh… Making games. Find it at http://www.yoyogames.com/make

  • http://www.kenginegaming.com Elmernite

Nice video! great to TIGsource pick it up. Yeah, I was wondering if he would do a second one since he said there are some many good games.
    -Elmernite

  • Paul Eres

I probably won’t do a second one any time soon, but perhaps in a year or two after more good games come out I could pick 100 new good ones (including some I left out of this one).

Bill: the music used during the second half of the video is from my unreleased game Saturated Dreamers (which is made in Game Maker but doesn’t appear in this video), and was composed by Long Dao.

  • Bill

Oh that’s unfortunate, I was hoping it could be downloaded from somewhere.

  • http://www.oxeyegames.com jeb

Btw… Did anybody notice how many violent games there were in the SNES clip? I was somewhat surprised… Not that violent games are shocking, but because they are boring to watch.

  • Paul Eres

I noticed that too, surprisingly Game Maker has more variety of non-violent games than even the SNES does.

  • Bas

Introduced to me Flail. Just got back from playing it: what an amazing game!

  • zepi

Moderators: please delete David’s post — it links to a shock website

  • http://noscript.net Bread

Last measure isn’t just a shock site, it’s malware that fucks with your browser.
Letting any arbitrary site run Javascript is insecure. Noscript ftw.

  • mots

martin’s “Blog” is just a gore/goatse popup fest

  • http://www.bobmarleyisdead.blogspot.com Mailman

Hmmm….I’ve come up with a mathmatic equasion for this video:

Game Maker + 100 awesome games in 10 minutes + (Touhou Music x 8-bit style) + TIGSource / YouTube’s kinda suckish quality = Fuck yeah.

    Also, why, Vimeo!?!?!?!?

  • http://www.bobmarleyisdead.blogspot.com Mailman

And I noticed I just spelt stuff wrong. Whatever.

  • nich

now you can caption or annotate the vid with the game names!

  • Critic

    And provide download links again!

  • Circy

Aww man I was toying with the idea with doing this, but for Clickteam games… and then I saw this brilliance.

Still, might give it a go anyway :)

  • AmnEn

Did Vimeo just pull a Hitler on Video Games? “Videos of Games are not art, thus we ban them”.

  • linde

Pull a Hitler? It’s their site and they can have whatever submission guidelines they want. It’s not your /right/ to use Vimeo; it’s a privilege.

Vimeo is a site for creative content by its users, and while this video may be awesome, the creative effort from the author is debatable. Sure, it’s a lot of work to capture and put together the different parts, but nothing was really added to what was captured.

    Godwin’s law, heh.

  • Trotim

“Game Maker is a program by Yoyo games used for uh… Making games. Find it at http://www.yoyogames.com/make

It’s not “by Yoyo games”. It’s by Mark Overmars. That’s important. They’re just publishing it and gave it a better internet presence.

  • Hideous

Mailman: You did so in your second post as well.

  • Francis

Anyone got the source of the chiptune at the beginning? I love it!

  • Francis

Also tried a number of these games, such as TheBoomlands, Quiescance, Crypt of Despair, and Lux, and with all of them they had an executable application which when run, would sit there and not respond, only taking up RAM until I ended the process, I use Windows Vista, so maybe that has something to do with it. But its disheartening being unable to play over half these games. Any idea what might be the problem?

  • Paul Eres

Francis: you must be running Vista. Use the Vista converter on the games before running them. Game Maker 6 games don’t work on Vista without it.

  • Paul Eres

Also, linde, there are arguably creative aspects in deciding which 6 seconds to use, in deciding which games to use, in playing the game while recording it (sometimes it needs to be played creatively in order to get good footage), in arranging them in a particular order in order, in matching particular scenes to the music, etc. But I’m not arguing against Vimeo deleting it, they can delete whatever they want, but it wasn’t just automatic mechanical thinking which produced this, there were plenty of creative decisions involved.
