Geneforge Saga Now on Steam

By: Derek Yu

On: November 2nd, 2011

Geneforge, by Spiderweb Software

All five games in Spiderweb Software‘s Geneforge saga are now available on Steam as a $20 bundle (currently on sale for $15). The series takes place in an original fantasy world dominated by Shapers, powerful mages who can create life from scratch. Like many of Spiderweb’s RPGs, the Geneforge games are known for their deep storylines, flexible skill system, and tactical, turn-based combat. The first game was released in 2001 and the final game was released in 2008.

Knights of the Chalice

Knights of the Chalice, by Heroic Fantasy Games

Knights of the Chalice, by Heroic Fantasy Games… that almost says it all, really. Released in 2009, this tactical RPG won a cult following for its close adherence to Dungeons & Dragons rules (the game uses the d20 Open Gaming License), the strength of its artificial intelligence, and its high level of difficulty. Despite its rough presentation (which is rather charming, actually), the game’s interface is actually quite easy to use, putting the burden of success squarely on the player’s heavily-armored shoulders.

I missed this when it first came out, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the upcoming sequel, which looks to deliver even more heroic fantasy to fans of D&D and tactical role-playing games. Thanks to Chef Boyardee for bringing the game to our attention on the forums.

Trailer: Kenshi

By: Derek Yu

On: September 8th, 2011

Here’s one to look out for: Kenshi, a free-roaming, squad-based strategy RPG that takes place in what looks like a large-scale (400 sq. km) post-apocalyptic world inhabited by samurai. Its developer, Lo-Fi Games, is putting a lot of emphasis on the fact that your character starts out as a weakling and must suffer losses as he works his way up to faction leader (or badass lone wolf). The combat looks like a unique hybrid of real-time and turn-based systems, “based on motion capture and developed by an actual martial artist and sword practitioner”.

Kenshi is at a very early stage in development, but a playable demo is planned for supporters ($10) some time next month.

Coffee Break Hero, by Big Block Games

Big Block Games is creating a simple two-week game from scratch to raise money for Child’s Play, the charity started by Penny Arcade that provides toys and games to sick children. The team will be streaming live and putting up builds of Coffee Break Hero every hour or so, along with design notes and other fun stuff. It’s Flash-based, so you can play it right in your browser as it gets updated.

Higher donators will receive prizes such as free games and be able to contribute to the game’s design by naming monsters and items.

Legend of Fae

By: Lorne Whiting

On: July 29th, 2011

Legend of Fae, by indie duo Endless Fluff, was recently added to Steam. The game is a charming mix of the Match-3 and RPG genres: the player switches between the two, using magic they’ve gathered in the puzzle mode to attack in the RPG mode. It’s pretty tame at first, but battles get frantic in the second half of the game and the mechanics start to really shine. The game is easily worth the 10 dollar price tag; by the end I’d say it was the best Match-3 game I’ve played. There’s just not much interest for the rather lengthy introductory segment of the the game.

Although the demo for the game is strangely absent from Steam’s store page, you can still nab it from the developer’s website.

Bastion

By: Derek Yu

On: July 20th, 2011

The isometric action-RPG Bastion has gone up on XBLA, as part of Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion. The first things you’ll notice about Bastion are Jen Zee‘s lush artwork and the narration, which is dynamic and used not only to develop the game’s story but to explain your actions in real-time as you play. According to the FAQ, the interaction focuses on “finesse” in combat and “rich” customization of stats, skills, and weaponry. The way the game handles difficulty is interesting, too – players can invoke idols to raise the challenge of certain aspects of the game (like enemy damage), in exchange for more experience points gained.

A PC port of the game is planned that is slated for later this year.

Review – Wanderlust: Rebirth

By: Alehkhs

On: June 29th, 2011

WanderlustReview04Long in development, indie co-op RPG Wanderlust: Rebirth has finally been released. Available either as a single copy for yourself, or sold in discounted packs of up to four for groups of players, Wanderlust: Rebirth allows for the player and up to three co-op companions to choose from four varying character classes and play through both a ten-chapter story mode as well as a never-ending, ever-more difficult “Crawl” mode.

A few weeks ago, I posted that the game had entered an “open beta” stage, and since that time, the game has undergone several changes based on feedback from the beta. I’ve played Wanderlust: Rebirth recently and so have decided to post a review of my time in the game, so be sure to read on after the jump.

Wanderlust: Rebirth enters Open Beta

Wanderlust - 01

Online co-op rpg Wanderlust: Rebirth entered open beta today, allowing interested players to experience a polished preview of the game before its planned launch on June 14th.

TIGSource has covered the game here before, and it’s exciting to see the game so close to release after almost five years in development. The beta spans the prologue and the first three chapters, includes a tutorial, as well as collectible gear and an item-crafting system. Characters created in the beta will be available once the final game releases, giving a nice head-start to those who play the beta.

The creators have posted a short series of videos of them playing the game cooperatively, and another series of them playing the game’s “Crawl” mode (which will be available in the full game), which sees them fighting wave after wave of enemies in an effort to place on an online high-score board.

Once the game releases, it will be sold either as single copies, or in packages of two, three, or even four games together at an overall discount, so be sure to jump online and bring a friend or three to check out Wanderlust: Rebirth.
