Vote for game genres and themes for Mojang’s game jam for this weekend, and they will make a game from the candidates with the most and least votes in each category. An RTS beat ’em up influenced by steampunk and ancient Egypt is the current winner.

All donations made for the game through Humble Bundle will go to charity.  So you’ll get the game while helping charity, and you get to pick restrictions for the genres and themes beforehand. Let’s hope this is one of those times when every vote counts.

Updates: By the Numbers

A number of alphas/betas I follow have had significant updates, so I thought I’d mention them together. Also, I’m updating the neglected “Dev Roll” on the sidebar to feature games that are in long-term development.

The first update is from Minecraft, which finally reached v1.0 last month, during the two-day Minecon that was held in Las Vegas. The update adds a proper ending and “hardcore mode” to the game, among other things (full changelog). After the release, Notch announced that he is relinquishing duties as lead developer to Jens Bergensten, who was originally hired to do back-end programming.

It’s worth noting that Minecraft made its public debut on TIGForums on May 17th, 2009. Check out the thread for a “Before They Were Stars”-style stroll down memory lane!

Next Mojang Game: Scrolls

Scrolls, by Mojang

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson announced yesterday that the other game his studio, Mojang Specifications, is working on is Scrolls, a multiplayer tactics game that’s inspired by collectible card games, board games, and role-playing games. When the game is purchased, players get a “starter deck” of cards and can buy further packs later on (although Mojang claims that you will not simply be able to buy your way to victory). Where the team plans to improve upon other CCG video games like Magic Online is by adding complex features that wouldn’t be possible by emulating an analogue game. Also, a single-player mode of Scrolls is a possibility.

If you want more information, I suggest going to Rock, Paper, Shotgun. ‘Cause they the best.
